Another addition is that i would check that all the sprocket teeth are present and undamaged. This is a common problem with used drives.

Hobie recommends Hobie Multi-Lube for maintaining the Mirage Drive plus corrosion prevention and lubrication of the other metal parts. PlanetSafe Lubricants AIM Extreme Duty also works extremely well and doesn't wash off in the ocean. Wipe New reconditions and protects the plastic hull and components.

I'm looking at a 2018 pro angler 12 for $2500. It is a huge purchase for someone like me. I know the pro angler is a perfect kayak for me, i just wanted to know what to look at on the kayak to make sure it is in good condition. Thanks for the video.

Hi Matt, to start with, make sure they kayak has been well looked after, that the owner has cared about his kayak. Check for minimal moisture within the hull. The mirage drive is tight, the masts are straight and is smooth in it's operation. Accessories that are fitted to the kayak suit your style of fishing. Also how the kayak is stored will give a good indication of the kayak being looked after. Hope this helps. David

In my 2nd hand hobie revo 13 kayak I've found that I've got a crack in the hull where the mirage-drive sits in the kayak. It's just under the bolt that holds the mirage drive. I did a bit of research and it seems it could be an issue. The hull started filling up when I was on the water last time and I used my bilge pump a few times.

That's disappointing.. I've heard of this problem and wonder if it applicable to certain models and year of manufacture? I'm hunting around for a 2nd hand kayak probably a revolution 13... What year is your one?

I'm considering between the Hobie Revolution and the Hobie outback model for fishing, do you have any suggestion which one will be good for offshore fishing and price range for a used one? I really appreciate your help. Thanks.

I am considering a used Mirage Rev 11 (2012). Is there a way to modify to get an above the hull seat?

Lol I can tell 80% of the used hobie have some issues. But still I ain’t paying a dime for a new hobie at the dealership!!

In general, Is it too much to ask to take it for a spin? It just seems expensive to not float it at least once before deciding
@Rodbendingsworld6 жыл бұрын
Hi Gary, it is not too much to ask (hopefully they are close to the water), but firstly make sure it is the right hull shape for your usage. Also have your cash ready to go once you are satisfied. David

Forgot to mention pre-2015 hobies do not have a reinforced drive area. Anecdotally 90% of drive area hull failures are from the use of turbo fins in a hull that was never designed for them. Cracked one myself using turbo fins, was not due to poor drive installation. My recommendation would be to change out turbo ST fins for std ST fins on all pre 2015 hobie kayaks to reduce the likelihood of hull failure.

Also, the extra locating pins ensured correct mirage drive installation when on the water. David

@@tontobb8956 good info... I'm looking at 2nd ... Roughly which models and year of manufacture do l best avoid? Cheers
@tontobb89562 жыл бұрын
@@yamasaki.design after 2010 i believe they reinforced the drive area so u can upgrade from standard fins to the larger size Don’t go turbo fins. The largest size as they can still potentially crack the hull. Tbh. The super duper sized fins are about 20% faster than the next level down Don’t get caught up in all the hobie bs Either go 2010or onwards for fewer issues or if u find good price hobie with the raised vantage seat. Buy that. Nice having a dry bum all day hehe

I wouldn’t buy a new Hobie let alone a second hand one......... the hulls are prone to cracking around the drive mechanism...... fact !!

Hi Craig, yes it did occur occasionally when the drive was not fitted correctly and most customers had their warranty protection which Hobie honored in good faith. David
@rodgraff17824 жыл бұрын
Completely un true. We have two Revo 13 s with many many hours. We also have many friends with mirage drive hacks, and have never seen or heard of cracking around the mirage drive. There is a warranty. Maybe you had ONE that cracked, and maybe you got it used and did not know the history. A defect like that would be an exception, and you should not condemn every Hobie mirage drive kayak because you saw it once, or red some other BS on the internet.
