Secondary Glazing Installation: Our Farmhouse in Ireland

Although the sheep's wool insulation around the old wooden windows was a huge success, it doesn't help stop the cold from falling from the single glazed windows in our 100+ year old, stone built farmhouse in Ireland. Behind the curtains is a cold draught falling from the window panes. How can we insulate these slightly rotted window frames to try and retain the heat we make from the old Stanley 8 range or the open fire in the bedroom?
Using the stick on plastic film type of secondary glazing, Ben starts the task of fitting the double sided tape before cutting and unwrapping the secondary glazing clear film. The magic happens once it has been stuck to the tape. This needs to be done on all of the windows, 12 windows to be exact. Some concern is raised with how well the tape will stick to the window frames, did it do it's job?
How well did the secondary glazing work on the windows of this old Irish farmhouse? Join us on this quick little money saving, heat saving video.
Dawn was busy continuing working on the land to create our perfect homestead. Homesteading is a huge reason of why we moved from England to Ireland, of course, the four bedroom derelict Irish Farmhouse helped too.

Hahaha. Well up until doing this to the windows, the living room windows were soaked in the mornings from the as heaters. The kitchen windows were wet from cooking and the bedroom windows from overnight breath. So getting the window vac was a great purchase. Since putting the film on the windows, the tool gets used in the car in the mornings hahaha.

Although the double glazing wasn't a success your video was it will be helpful to anyone thinking of having a go. We did the same in our cottage with the same result sadly. Our only window that was a success was the downstairs toilet which was the coldest room in our house so amybe heat has something to do with it. "if at first you don't succeed ...." XX

It was worth a shot Carol and nearly worked. I think I remember that toilet, only now you have mentioned it though. Maybe the heat helps keep the stick a bit but I am blaming the painted and then unpainted parts of the frame, as the newest windows look great, excluding cat holes lol. Hopefully we can sort acrylic to stick much better. Hope you are well :-) xx

If you put foam tube on edges of the acrylic sheet it will hold it in place you cut the acrylic just a little smaller so the foam fits into the sash

LOVE this idea! Especially like it because it’s easy to take back out when you want the windows open. The magnetic strips would allow the same but it’s not cheap per roll. So thanks for giving us another option. 😊

Hi Colette, not a long video as there are only so many times you can stand seeing windows being stuck with double sided tape and then covered lol. So I went with a little bit arty this time, hence the drone. Acrylic plastic will solve the problem as it doesn't matter how I try to explain to the kittens that it is there to keep them warm too, they don't listen as per usual when I talk to them :-) Thank you Colette for always being with us when a new video gets released :-)

Used to be when I was growing up, we used the heavier plastic and thin strips of cardboard tacked or stapled all the way around the window on the outside. But, first, you've got stone walls, so can only do the frame itself. Secondly, it was sure rough on the paint. Those little tack or staples need to come off which basically ruined the paint. If you left them, that looked bad too.

Hi William The thin film was great while it lasted. This year will be a much better job (easy for me to say now) using Perspex on a timber frame. Not sure of the exact details yet but it is on our pre-winter to do list. If it wasn't for the cats, we would use the thin film again as it really did make a difference. Thanks for all of your watching and commenting and of course being a valued channel member :-)

Before we moved to Ireland we lived in a Victorian cottage with original sash windows. I refurbished the windows with brush type draught proofing. It made a huge difference but the thing that made the biggest difference was using thermal blinds and curtains over the top. It created an extra air gap that helped immensely. Also closing the blinds and curtains as soon as the sun goes down. We are in France now and I close the shutters every day just as the sun is disappears. It really keeps the heat in.

Funnily enough, we came in today I went and shut the curtains in all of the rooms as I have noticed it makes a big difference. The film worked really well for the time it lasted. A couple of windows are hanging on lol. Thermal blinds, is it the roller sort? Thanks for your input and suggestions :-)

Hi Toni, thank you for watching and commenting. Sadly, where we had to reveal the whole window frame due to rot, wood worm, or just the fact that nothing was holding them in (kzbin.info/www/bejne/gou6noGlgtBlY7ssi=qjqPvddQg7wL7uQF&t=1021) we have both very old paint and then exposed bare timber frame. The two front windows, the one at the end which is in tact and the one in our bedroom, where the drone was looking in are the best windows and frames and the tape has held very well. I am not sure even alcohol would have helped in this instance, and the sticky tape isn't great either. We will however be using it when we look at doing the acrylic sheets, so thank you for mentioning it :-)

yeah, doesn't stick as well on unpainted wood. I ended up putting wide clear tuct tape over the corners. Don't worry about how the edges look. stops the drafts. Keep the kitties away from it can be a challenge :) Keep taping over the holes. I found thicker, clear plastic in one-inch by one-inch frames works better. You can put it in with removable caulking. Yeah, go with the acrylic if you can afford it,. will last for years, still suggest you put them in frames so you can take them off in the summer. Attaching to the outside of the windows can be an option then, YOu are so patient, putting that film on and watching it pull away from the plastic drove me crazy!

Ooooh, putting the acrylic in a fame is a great idea. The magnetic tape is a bit of a concern with it pulling away again but with frames, screws could be an option. Oddly, we have bought some 3" clear duct tape to use but once the cats had decided they like to pop holes in it, we haven't used it yet lol. Yes, each day a little bit more comes away and a little bit more of my heart breaks hahaha. Now I am wondering if the film was Dawn's idea to get a new hair dryer by the back door ? Internally the windows have come up well with all the work on the insulation, repairs and painting. Once the outside is done then there is a good chance that the windows will keep going until the higher priority items are done and dusted. For night time if you had shutters working it is possible to basically fit in a short of waterproof foam pillow and then the close shutters so its makes a massive thermal barrier for nights of ultra high winds. In the old days it was fairly common that a tattie sack (hessian sack) filled with straw and sheep wool was put into the windows on the west side where the gales are strongest to keep some warmth in the home and benefit from the fires.
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 7 ай бұрын
To be 100% fair to Dawn, it was my idea and ermmmm...... we didn't have a hair dryer. I think Dawn gave hers to our daughter some time ago. The windows don't look too bad on the face of it as they have only been cleaned by Dawn, frames and panes, inside and out, no repairs or paint yet. There used to be shutters Joe but sadly long gone as that would be a great, simple method at night time. Not so attractive in the day lol. We also liked your kingspan idea for night time but thought something see through would be a better 24 hours a day thing, the cats had a different idea. We, and most likely you, had some very strong winds and thankfully we only lost one slate :-) Oh, and the old TV aerial won't be used again as it was in the middle of the road. We hope you are keeping well :-) and thank you.

Good that all that work with roofers paid off in terms of the significant storms that are said to be very unusual even for your part of Ireland. Amazing what a wash does to the window frames as it looks on the video been repaired and painted up. You do not have time for the TV anyway come the better weather as you have the home and homestead to work on LOL. @@thecornerhouseproject

Oh what a great idea for Valentines day, she will be thrilled hahahaha. We do love Shaun the roofer AKA ridge tile man, chimney un-blocker as what he has done is great work. The tile we did lose is on the hip on the south end so not just a quick ladder & roof ladder job to slip a new one in, but we will get it sorted. We watched the TV really for the first time at Christmas for a few films and the fireworks on the BBC for new years eve. Since then we haven't spent any time in the living room or watching the TV, so the aerial is no big loss. Currently, work on the land / homestead is well under way with much needed clearing of fallen trees etc making an estimated 1/3, maybe more, of the land inaccessible or unusable in the future. Look out for the next video. Thanks for the reply :-)

Looked at all these alternative secondary glazing kits for single pain glass, our place is similar to yours with a few more windows at the front, ended up with 4mm acrylic cut to fit the overall surround with 4/5mm cushioned d/s tape to fix allowing for any uneven surfaces, then pinned a few white round cable clips to take the weight and hold it in place sides as well. Has it stopped the condensation about 95%, does the house feel warmer yes by 5 degrees, soundproofing is there as well, not that we need it as we are in the country. Total costs for the acrylic sheeting cut to size was less than the cost of one window £450 using 4mm as 3mm is to flimsy for larger windows. I didn't use the magnetic strips as the cost would of doubled, got a 50m x 5mm roll of foam double sided high tack for less than a tenner and some 50 cable round clips the ones that BT uses just changed the size of the pins for longer ones. Three months down the line has it been worth it, you bet, haven't really had the oil central heating on just the wood burners keeping the place at 19/20 degrees daytime 16 degrees night time. When we had very high outside humidity we had a small amount on condensation on the inside, not much so to deal with this we opened just a little the outside window so air could circulate removing any moisture. Will remove them in the spring for better weather ahead ready for the next winter to arrive, just remember if you do go down this line to open the doors each day to allow fresh air in and stale air out for a few minutes as you won't be able to open them from the inside. Have bought some used trickle vents to allow at least some fresh air during colder periods, just a question of fitting them to the acrylic sheets and wooden windows when the warmer weather arrives. Hope this helps you out!
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 7 ай бұрын
That really does! Thank you. You’re so right with the magnetic strips, we were working it out the other night and it works out pretty expensive when you add the magnetic tape to the cost of the sheets of acrylic. Love the cable clips idea too. Just out of curiosity, did you try just the sheets of acrylic held in place with the cable clips? Only ask because the foam strip can be a right pain to get off once it’s on. Used it in the past as fraught excluder on doors, if I’m thinking of the same stuff? I do really like the idea of adding a trickle vent to them though. Thank you for taking the time to type all of that out for us, it really does help hugely in giving us some ideas. Especially cost saving ones!
@ricardopelc-wesoly3483
@ricardopelc-wesoly3483 7 ай бұрын
The idea of using 5mm foam d/s tape was to iron out unevenness around the wood frame and create a perfect seal, as considering the 4mm sheets were quite heavy they needed support really, having said that a couple of weeks later the foam tape started to come away from the window surround but still held firmly to the acrylic sheet so that sorted the sticky messy issue that you had encountered, so the cable clips now are really just keeping the sheets in place and therefore allowing for easy removal as and when. You may have to experiment with the right size cable clips, I ended up using the slightly larger ones I think they were around 12mm but used longer pins to get a better fixing. You could off course just use single sided foam tape applied to the acrylic, I wasn't thinking at the time rather on costs as the whole 50m roll only cost a tenner, the only alternative is single sided insulation tape which can be quite expensive depending on how many windows you have to do. the alternative to full access to the openings would be depending where the latch openings are is to just cover the window units separate if the handle will allow it I did consider that but we have traditional sash, okay for the bottom window to open but not the top so ended up covering the whole frame. If you need any photo's of my setup "cat" included and where I purchased the acrylic sheets message me.@@thecornerhouseproject

The cats were the first problem I thought you might have. :) I thought you'd probably also have condensation between the window and the plastic film and then mould. I guess it didn't last long enough for that. Clear Perspex is probably the way to go alright.
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 7 ай бұрын
Hi Horza, thanks for watching and commenting :-) The cats didn't cross my mind too much as why would you want to put your claw through something that had just been done and keeps the house warmer hahaha. The condensation between the two surfaces was on my mind which was why I ran the hairdryer over the windows and frames to start with. While the film was intact or still stuck to the frames, there wasn't a spot of condensation, even the windows where the glass has slipped and there is a slight gap were dry. This applied to both the pre-hair dried and not hair dried frames. I was really pleased with the job. It was just the question of "will the tape hold". This was answered as the days passed. We are happy that acrylic will work, it is now a case of sourcing at the best price and deciding how to fix / attach to the windows. The need to remove them sort of rules out permanent fixings. Thanks again Horza. All the best.

@@thecornerhouseproject If it was me, I probably wouldn't try to use sticky tape or anything like that. It's bound to come off. I'd get draught proofing strip, run that around the edge of the Perspex and then screw the Perspex to the window frame, so the Perspex is holding the draught proofing strip in place. You'd want to be careful drilling the holes for the screws though. Don't put the holes too close to the edge of the Perspex, as it might crack. Boring the holes for the screws with a hot awl might be better. I'd do that outside though as the fumes from the Perspex will be toxic. I'd use flat bottomed, dome headed screws with washers and be careful not to tighten them too much or you will be recreating the antics your cats got up to. :)

If you go with the acrylic panels, consider installing them on the outside, like the old fashioned storm windows we had when I was a boy (that was a LONG time ago 😊). My first thought, as you were putting it up, “But what will the cats do to it?”. I have one cat who is obsessed with eating plastic…she chewed through the plastic fridge water line, it was awful…now it’s a copper tube. The other cat is obsessed with eating tape…she thinks every Amazon package is her personal treat. They would think it was a royal feast if we had to do that to our windows. Luckily our current house is 31 years old, so, the windows are pretty draft free, except for one room. But I remember having to do that to our apartment windows when I was a child, but I don’t remember heating them to fit, or double sided tape. I think it was something like duct tape. It used to make the weirdest sounds because the wind would suck it towards the window. Is heating the plastic new, or did my mom not put it in right?

All three of them love an Amazon box and bite into the box edges once opened. We think we have three damaged cats, but wouldn't change them. I did some covering the glass too. not frightfully successsful, I'm afraid... in my case it wasn't cats but a fascinated great grandchild... I wonder if we can find anything that will work.???

Hi Mary, it was worth a go though and worked well while it lasted don't you think? This year we are looking to make a wooden frame and use clear Perspex but will have the advantage of having formed some sort of box against the wall and window to have something to fix it to. We will see how it goes though. There are companies who will cut everything to side for you so it is easier. Not a cheap route for us though hence the film. Live and learn I suppose. Thank you Mary for watching and commenting :-)

Worth trying Ben, but it's a real shame when money spent on something like this and then it doesn't work. You'll find a solution no doubt! Kx

Yeah most definitely worth trying because it worked really well until the fluffy residents had other plans! X

Okay, who "done" it? Which feline scratched the plastic open? Hmmm, Peaches? Nah, too maternal, she wants the warmth in the house. Hmmm, Alan? Nah, he's my favourite. (Actually I love all 3.) Hmmm, Steve? He's a curious bloke - too curious perhaps. I'm blaming Steve haha. Poor little angel, tell him I'm just teasing. All are innocent until caught with claws in the plastic.

Haha….i like your powers of deduction! It was Steve….or at least he is who we have caught red pawed a few times! Just today he was pawing at it because he saw a bird outside! I just also want to say I am impressed that you have their personalities all down to a tee! Steve is a little trouble maker…but soo cute and snuggly. Alan is an absolute darling and he has learnt to fetch and bring back his toys which is amazing to us as we’ve had countless cats in our lives and he is the first cat we’ve owned who has done that! Peach is still quite timid, loves a stroke and calls for the boys when she can’t find them. So I think you were pretty spot on!

Wow Ben, I have never seen these before, how interesting. I wonder if they stick better to PVC windows rather than wood. You know your windows are in great condition for wood aren't they. My little Lost (cat) would be through that too. How is Alan doing since his op?
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 7 ай бұрын
It works really well….well, it DID work really well! Haha Yeah they would probably stick to pvc windows a whole lot better. They aren’t bad at all, condition wise. The outside need a bit of work, few repairs here and there though and they should be good for a fair while. Alan is doing really well. He had his stitches removed Friday just gone and looks much less hardcore now! His eye has healed well, it’s now slightly smaller than his other one because of how much skin they had to take away but no pain more and irritation for him so that’s the main thing. Xx

Hi Yes, that will be the way we will most likely go for the strength against the cats talons. I think it will be the attaching them to the window frame that will be the fun part. Thank you for watching and commenting :-)

I am a bit confused - you are covering both top and bottom windows - surely this means they cannot then be opened???? So is this treatment only for winter and then you have cut the plastic to be able to open the windows in summer, and do all over again, next winter??? Have I got this wrong???? Many thanks

Basically yes you cannot open the windows unless you remove the plastic sheeting, alternatively if using 4mm acrylic sheeting you could incorporate some kind of trickle vent on the inside and outside to allow some fresh air to exchange, which I am in the process of doing when it gets a bit warmer.

Like @ricardopelc-wesoly3483 said you’re absolutely right, we would have to do it all again had the cats not wrecked it already lol So, yeah we will moving on to doing acrylic I think but they will have to be in such a way that we can remove them easily for opening the windows, but I do like the trickle vent idea there.

Hi Karla This was just one I bought from Amazon, others may be thicker and if we didn't have cats with claws, oh, and the tape was strong enough to stick when under tension, it would be great lol. Acrylic will keep more heat in and cold out but the price is expensive if you also introduce magnetic tape to keep it attached to the window frame. Please come back and let us know how you get on as we will be very interested. Thank you for watching and commenting :-)

Hi Adam There really were a couple of big storms one after another. I am pleased to say mate that we lost only one slate and the TV aerial lol. The slate is on the end of the house so not easy just to stick a ladder up and replace with a new one, but we will have a go. How did you fair up there?
