Hi Dave, I’m an avid fan of your channel and have watched practically all of your tutorials. Thank you for that. Please can you try and answer this question? My judo sensei is not keen for me to use osoto gari in practice as he says that Uke’s knee could pop. How can that happen? Is it if uke is not taken off balance properly? I obviously do not want to injure my fellow training partners, so I restrain myself from using this technique.

First, I am wondering if your sensei had a bad experience with o soto gari which would explain this hesitation for the throw. Second, O soto is a throw that needs practice and can be done in many ways. If done wrong and forced when you have a bad position, then yes, it can hurt someone. With that said, if you have the correct position and off balance it is one of the most effective throws in judo. I would say, work on the fundamentals and details and get those down and work on it slowly with a partner that is a good uke and then work on it until you feel comfortable to do in randori. I hope this helps.

That's a powerful throw, on hard ground in self defense, certainly would stun if not ko uki; and if you slammed uki on his head, in life threatening situation, could be fatal
