Mike Piazza's beef with Roger Clemens was so much more than the broken bat fiasco

If you know one thing about Mike Piazza's beef with Roger Clemens, it's probably the moment in Game 2 of the 2000 World Series when Clemens threw a chunk of Piazza's broken bat right back at Piazza. That's definitely the climax of the feud, but it wasn't an isolated incident.
Clemens vs. Piazza is best understood within a few contexts: First, the surprisingly recent history of the Yankees-Mets rivalry. Second, baseball's strange, unwritten justice system wherein pitchers sometimes throw right at batters. Above all else, you need to remember the way intention and fate interacted to create that climactic moment in 2000. We saw a flurry of increasingly embarrassing homers, a beanball that led to a concussion, a possibility of "karate," and a lot of back-and-forth in the media before the bat shattered that night. And after that moment, there's a lot of unresolved tension between two baseball legends. It's pretty awkward.

I remember after Clemens gave up back 2 back homers he drilled John Shelby with the next pitch who charged Clemens with bat in hand, good thing catcher John Marzano was able to tackle Shelby before he reached the mound. You can see there's a moment where Clemens realizes what he's doing, and he just kind of tosses the bat low. He looks at first like he's going to throw it as hard as he can at him, but then his body language just shifts. It's subtle, but you can see it. I think he was reacting with emotions, like when it happened, I think his instincts just kicked in, and he thought he was being attacked or something. I don't know any rational reason why he would do that. Clemens was delusional or something I think, he thought Piazza was starting with him, and that he purposely got hit in the head, so there you go.

What baffles me even more than the antisocial behavior of professional baseball players is how many baseball fans wish they could get in a fight, but don't because they would face social consequences, so they live vicariously through demanding that baseball players fight each other

Yeah, Piazza was one of my favorite players growing up, and all I knew of Clemens was the bat incident, so I thought he was some kind of psycho. But watching this, I really think he was throwing the bat to the dugout, but Piazza was running to first base, and he almost hit him. I don't think it was intentional. But people want to believe in the drama over the mundane reality.

I'm so old, I remember being a kid and seeing this live. What an exciting time, every year the world series seemed like a big deal, I'm giant event you didn't want to miss each night on TV. Our parents would let us stay up late whenever it was the NBA finals of the world series, we knew it was special, I wish it was still like that. The last world series I remember feeling like a big deal was the Cubs and Indians from a few years back now. All of my co-workers were going over to my boss's house each night to watch those exciting games.

As a diehard Yankee Fan, the thinking it was the ball excuse never made sense. Whether it’s a bat or a ball, there’s no reason to throw it in that direction lol.. With that said, Clemens’ intensity is what made him great & scary. Honestly, Piazza wanted no part of Clemens..

I think it's more likely these two guys don't care about an incident that happened over 20 years ago, and they wouldn't even think about it if the media didn't bring it up. Just laugh at Mike Piazza's split against Roger Clemens, say Clemens had roid rage, and call it a day

I think Piazza handled it perfectly. He stepped to Clemens after it happened, and like he said, if Clemens wanted a fight, Piazza probably would have done it. But Clemens was reacting like he didn't mean it, and that defused things just enough. And from this video, I believe that Clemens really didn't mean to throw the bat at Piazza. I think he had a brain fart, fielded the bat, realized it wasn't the ball, also nearly got hit by it, and in the heat of the moment threw it towards the dugout off the field. But Piazza was running to first so it almost caught him. Clemens knew it looked bad, but he said he didn't meant it. But no one believes him. I think people want to believe that he meant to throw it. People want drama. The truth that it was an accident is too mundane.

I remember this feud very well. The simple fact is this: Mike owned Roger's ass at the plate. Mike was a stellar hitter, the best hitting catcher to date. Roger is not going to tolerate all this hitting so he tried to brush him back and maybe he got a little too pumped up about it. These guys are a competitive that most regular people do not understand and baseball like most sports is really just organized war. Piazza owned his ass and Clemens didn't like it. Not cool that he throws at his head but it's in the past and thank God, Mike is doing fine despite being drilled in the head. FYI, Clemens never liked playing the Mets as he was a part of that losing Red Sox team back in '86. That's another reason he was on edge playing them. One of them is in the HoF the other is not and for good reason.

Mike will never admit it, he is very smart, he has this business type look even when he played, he probably didn’t tip but studied the scouting report and asked Roger to pitch to the batter’s strenght. That all star game was the worst beating of Roger Clemen’s career. That all star game you forgot to mention that. Was in Houston, Roger Clemens had ads out was being advertised as a hero, he had a phenomenal season going for him. The fans of 30 teams and then some more were watching. It was the perfect stage to absolutely embarrass Roger Clemens. But we won’t hear this until Piazza is probably 92. It just doesn’t make sense that Clemens was that good that year except for the ASG.
