The unlikeliest wildcard comeback needs a deep rewind

The 2022 Wildcard series was essentially a contest to see who rebuilt better.
The Blue Jays had started a rebuild 6 years prior, relying on a third-best-in-baseball farm system boasting the likes of Vlad Guerrero Jr, Bo Bichette, and Teoscar Hernandez. It takes time for talent to develop and Toronto had no interest in rushing their young talent. Well, the Toronto Blue Jays front office had no interest in rushing, the city of Toronto was dying for the young guys to be called up/;
2018 was also a frustrating year for Mariners fans. Not during the season, the season was the most celebrating Mariners fans got to do in a long time. Seattle racked up their most wins since 2003- 89 of ‘em.
And management looked the happy fans dead in the eye, and said “enjoy it!” and then mumbled much more quietly, “while you still can.” Because immediately after the season they shed all their good players in favor of a rebuild.
Upsetting at the time, but also kinda why 2022 has seen Julio Rodriguez, Luis Castiollo, Robbie Ray, and Cal Raleigh propel the Mariners to their first postseason in 21 years.

8:34 I'd like to provide some context here: earlier that season in the TOR @ SEA series in July, Carlos Santana had slugged 3 homeruns in the span of two games against the Jays, all of which were off their right handed pitchers. The jays manager was possibly thinking when he pulled gausman "okay, I know what he's done to my righties, maybe a lefty would be a better idea here".

Also, in the mid 2010’s, if they had done a better job of developing prospects then in 2014 or 16 they could’ve made it then. They also could’ve made the playoffs in 2002 and 2003 if today’s playoff format was around then. AL was stacked in 2002 in particular in my opinion. 2018 while an 89 win team had the stats of probably a 79 win team. You never know, but given the potential for regression with an older team than they had in 2021, I can’t say I blame them for rebuilding.

Secret Base! We need a "Moment in history" video on Jhon Duran's goal against Bayern Munich, so much built into it, it's insane. Duran was on the brink of leaving in the summer, going so far as to do the "Irons" on a livestream which is gesture associated with West Ham, a team he was reported to have strong interest from, since then he has scored 5 game winners one of which was against West Ham. Villa won their only Champions League (When it was the European Cup) by beating Bayern 1-0 in the final and for their first home game back in the Champions League in 40+ years they again play Bayern Munich. It's a tight game, Villa have a goal chalked off due to offside and Bayern pressure them, we get into the 70th minute, Duran has been subbed on, one long ball from Pau Torres splits the Bayern defence, Neuer is off his line and from about 25 yards Duran lobs Neuer and scores the goal that would see Villa go on to win 1-0 just like they did 40+ years ago.

I do not agree that the Jays just had a bad team after the 2 post season appearances. The issue was that they brought in Mark Shapiro during that time as President of Baseball Ops (as a GM known for keeping costs down), then they low balled their GM Alex Anthopolous (you know the guy who helped win the Braves their last ring), then they followed that up by not bringing back anyone AA traded for like Davis Price (no surprise since Rogers has always been stingy on signing top talent for the money required) and because Rogers continued to not sign anyone of consequence unless they could get a deal they only improved through trades which decimated their farm system (and the fact that their development system had become lacklustre as well)

What needs a deep rewind is the Blue Jays asinine decision to pull Jose Berrios - who was dealing - from the game early in the 2023 Wild Card Series. Still not sure whether the idea came from the manager of the front office - inexplicably nobody was fired for this idiocy - but this is my go to candidate for 'stupidest ideas in the history of sports playoff games'.

That game signified the downfall of the current iteration of the Blue Jays. So much talent now just an uncertain future. Now battling with the Rays and my Red Sox (unless FSG starts opening the checkbooks again) for last in the AL East
