JJ Redick’s beef with Maryland was flavored by ugly heckles, prank calls, and Duke’s legacy of jerks

When JJ Redick was at Duke, a lot of college students hated him. He was too confident, too good, and went a rich kids’ school. In college bball, that’s enough to be despised. And no school’s fanbase was more aggressive (or sometimes … more horrid) than at The University of Maryland.
What started out as a school simply hating Redick just like everyone else ballooned into something larger and nastier (hint: beef).
College beef is a unique cut. There doesn’t have to be much substance to create rich flavors that fill you up and stick to your bones, well after the meal is over.

As a Giants fan, 2010s Giants would be fascinating. It'd be a particularly good chance to highlight some of the unsung players for that dynasty, particularly the core four relievers that were on all three championship teams (Sergio Romo, Santiago Casilla, Jeremy Affeldt, and Javier Lopez), some of whom left before 2016, a playoff run that fell apart due to a weak bullpen. As a UMD fan who was in HS at the peak of this Maryland-Duke rivalry, here’s a fun story from that era (with the caveat that I know the humor of this is not-at-all considered acceptable anymore, but I still think it’s clever enough to appreciate): there was a Duke fan in attendance at a Duke-UMD game in College Park during Redick’s college days, and he was proudly & defiantly (with a smug grin too, might I add) holding up a sign that read “J.J. is Redickulous” ...but what he didn’t realize was that a UMD fan in the row behind him was holding up an addendum, of sorts, which added “ly gay” to the end of the message. PS - You can find pictures of it on Google quite easily, which only make it funnier.

As a Marylander I did not know these stories, and I gotta say about halfway through the video: MD fans are the villians here. UMD College Park is a really good school and it represents, for the most part, the richest kids in the highest median income state in the country, a place where a lot of families make at least six figures, so it's not like it's some school for the downtrodden, so any resentment we feel towards Duke as a blueblood school is, at best, projection.

As a Marylander im not sure you know what you're talking about. Johns Hopkins is the prestigious rich school here, and the real money is going to go there or to places like Bucknell, Princeton and the other traditional Ivy League schools. Maryland is a state school with an average tuition that carries a significant cross section of society, especially lower income students. Also highest median income means nothing because of cost of living. Just like how 75k isnt that much in Silicon Valley, its all relative compared to expenses and Maryland has a very expensive housing market anywhere in the Metro area. UMD tuition in state is 10k. Duke Tuition is 60k. Not even comparable.

As a Terps fan, I honestly miss playing Duke every year. Sure, I still hate Duke, I hate there players, I hate there attitude, I hate there ability to seemingly win everything. However, I do respect them, and I miss the rivalry that was there. There absence from Maryland's schedule leaves a hole in my heart.

I was in middle school in NC at the time and we all thought this was so weird with this out of state school when all four NC ACC schools were all good for once. NC State had Julius Hodge (didn’t pan out but a double double machine who was competitive with CP3 and Redick in college), Wake had CP3 punching Hodge in the nuts, UNC had just hired Roy Williams and was building. No one cared or talked about Maryland until the news coverage. Nice to see more of the history from Maryland’s perspective.
