Secretly building my wife a $60 cabin

When COVID-19 locked me and my family down on the small farm, I decided to build my wife a cabin-office in the paddock without her knowing. Using whatever materials were on the property, which were gathered up piles of other people’s junk over time, and with our 6 month old daughter as accomplice, Junk Cabin emerged. What started out as a stunt to see how much secretive, ad-hoc building I could get away with, turned into the most satisfying building project I’ve ever made.

My dad, who is a retired carpenter, and is incredibly talented, does this a lot. We have an allotment and to date he's made 2 sheds, a greenhouse and 3 cold frames out of reclaimed timber. You're not kidding when you say the quality is better than what you get these days. The shed he made looks like something you would buy out of a hardware store, and while he was making it he ended up rejecting a LOT of reclaimed timber because it wasn't hardwood. It's amazing what you can find lying about if you know what you're looking for. He's a bit doddery on his legs these days, so he moved it all with his bike. We still have one shed packed full of reclaimed hardwood. Probably thousands worth, just found lying about. It's awesome to see other people doing stuff like this too!

Oh Ellen! This is a high level. Good man, strong physically, good mentally. Nice round story of such a family. Maybe only 200,000 carpenter men could imagine this life on Earth with you. For now, most of the trouble is with distance and finding each other for couples. There were times when I was invited to the other half of the Earth as well, but I didn’t say yes right away. There is no time for hesitation now.

While this video may be nearly 2 years old by now, it has reminded me of the passions I once had of my hobbies - working with my hands on cars, motorcycles, electronics. Anything I decided need to be done I did on my own, and as I've grown older, recessed into a pit of self-pity, paying others to do the work instead. You've reminded me that yes, I can do these things, and they are greatly satisfying. Applying yourself, having that mental fortitude - it never goes away. You just need to utilize it. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

the real trick is just keeping your eye out for that next channel that adds something positive into your life. Its too easy to get wrapped up in the giant heap of bad news coming from all directions. I took someones advice on this years ago and its helped me mentally feel better having hundreds of channels I've found over several years. some of the best stuff comes from topics I've never had any interest in. From physics to hobo's riding trains. The next trick is keep on pumping positive comments into all this. Just flat out avoid the muppets and KZbin for me is an amazing place. Truly nothing compares to it in media.

After watching your Retracing the Line video, I decided to start my own lockdown challenge with my Dad. In Illinois, we have a old railroad line that was converted into a trail called the Great Western Trail near our home. We decided to bike along it and it was incredible to see the old railway platforms and tracks hidden in parts of the forest that we hadn’t explored before. We biked 230 miles over the course of a month. I just wanted to say thanks for inspiring a journey that has added so much joy to my life. It is neat that on the other side of the world, there is another rundown railroad that that gives me the same opportunity for adventure that you had!

I absolutely love doing this - repurposing old and salvaged materials for new projects. A couple of years back a friend and I built a 10ft by 10ft shed/man cave for his allotment using virtually all reclaimed materials. It engages you - working around and solving problems with what you have available, forcing you to be creative and inventive. Very wholesome work and good for the soul. I'm just off now to finish a stud wall in my loft made with reclaimed wood batten.
