I can tell you why ratings. Bill says it’s because it’s too watered down, but that makes zero sense to me. I live in OKC, I am a diehard OKC fan, and I watched all 82 games since they arrived, but now I can’t watch on any platform. I have KZbin TV for my cable and they aren’t available. I tried NBA league pass and the games are blacked out. The NBA isn’t the NFL. The majority of the people watching are fans watching their local team. If you make it impossible for people like me who want to watch their local games you’re going to miss out on the ratings. Other than the playoffs, I only watched a handful of Thunder games last season, and I have watched a single game this season and they’ve been the 1 seed in the West that entire time. Out of 100 or so regular season game since last season I’ve seen 5 games. I would have watched 100 out of 100 if they gave me an option. I pay for NFL league pass to watch the 49ers. If I could get Thunder games on League Pass I’d but it too. It’s insane that people are confused about the ratings being lower. What do you think is going to happen when you make it impossible for a teams biggest fans to watch their local team game? It’s an easy fix. Make the Thunder games available for me and thousands of other OKC fans and the ratings will go up immediately.

@@burgercheezes The packages were designed for out-of-town fans such as the OP being a 49er fan living outside of the Bay Area, sports bars and the like. Locally they want you to pay for a carrier to watch your teams. I wish that weren't true but there's no way these conglomerates and billionaires are going to make something easier or cheaper for us. They're going to offer something you want, but it's always for a premium. I'm glad the ratings are down as this is the only thing that will flip the balance back the other way. Good on the OP's desire to watch the Thunder every night. I used to be that way with the Knicks, and that was way back when it was first to 80 wins. I find today's game mostly unwatchable, with the exception of certain teams, bigger games and playoffs. Everyone plays the same, there are way too many threes, guys sit all the damn time and instead of addressing it leadership introduces something ridiculous like the NBA cup. Yup, let's make the NBA like European soccer where there are 88 trophies up for grabs on an annual basis. I guess that's why I'm no longer part of the target demographic.

At the absolute peak of WB yoinking my money, I was paying for cable which they got 37% of my package monthly, so they got $49 every month because my package was $135 roughly every month, plus the HBO Max subscription I had which was $15. They lost $64 a month from me. Now let's also account for this, I used to buy a shit load of Blu-rays. So probably once or twice a month at least I was buying a Blu-ray for $10-$30 every single month, now all that stuff is on Max, so why bother? So now you're losing like $30 additionally every single month. That totals to $94. That doesn't even include the amount of money I used to spend on their video games like Mortal Kombat, Batman Arkham, and more that they just don't release often enough anymore and if they do they are often shit. I went from probably giving WB like $1000 of my money per year to like only giving them my $15 a month for Max and occasionally seeing a movie like "Barbie" in theaters and having to buy 4 tickets for my GF and stuff. That's fucking abysmal. This shit is definitely gonna collapse sooner than later.

Anthony Edwards is the next great superstar and being in a mid-market Minnesota team might actually make his swagger more tolerable for a national audience. It's not a small market team like Cleveland or OKC, it's also a bit of a blank slate with no deep-rooted rivalries. Also Minnesota could be the team that switches conferences with expansion which could add a bit more interest if they are making deep playoff runs as he ages into his prime. The NBA can constantly force Minnesota into any timeslots that they need for whatever marketing purpose they're trying to achieve and not get the same blow-back as they'd get for a major team on the east coast or west coast. AE just needs to build his brand a few more years and start winning some rings.

Bill Simmons won't talk about this, but part of the reason NBA ratings are down is wokeness. They canceled Rachel Nichols and now ESPN's flagship daily show is unwatchable with Malika Andrews. Also, people don't want to be told they are racist, when they aren't, while watching sports. The Diddy Tapes are an opportunity to grow NBA viewers and pivot to more of a mainstream democratic where people actually voted for Trump because they were tired of the gaslighting. If LeBron is implicated, it will be the chance the NBA would have to pivot back to the middle like other sports have. You see it in the NFL and the UFC. Interesting times ahead. Especially since the NBA has Inside The NBA to speak honestly to people about these woke issues.
@Riles3152Күн бұрын
Yes, that is an elephant in the room topic of reason. I just think fans by and large are tired of LeBron James and everything that comes with his persona and presentation. There are certain athletes that left the game early where people wanted to see more, like Barry Sanders. There are other athletes that seem to get out of the game just in time, like Kobe Bryant , Larry Bird or John Elway. Then there are those who just seemed to stay too long to the point where fans to a majority extent lost interest in what they were seeing. LeBron, as the face of the NBA became a detriment to the overall health of the NBA. The face of your professional sports league cannot be polarizing. And that’s exactly what LeBron became.

You just want to make a non-political topic political. There are a dozen reasons why people don't watch and the league's politics/ wokeness is not one of them. The average NBA fan has no opinion whatsoever on Rachel Nichols, but knows Lebron. Like or hate Lebron, he attracts a lot money and generates massive profits for the NBA. Wokeness has so much less relevance on the actual profuct than what your dumb political argument implies. It's all in your head, not out in the real world.

@@slightexag You're incorrect. Just because you have a different opinion, it doesn't mean my perspective isn't true. Part of the reason why Inside The NBA is so popular with fans is that it isn't woke. And a big reason why there's so much push back in canceling the show is that people would be concerned that the NBA would become this woke bland ESPN version it has become many other places.

I personally think it’s a weird case where the NFL product has just gotten worse and worse and the NBA product has gotten better and better but the ratings are flipped for the two.
@Riles3152Күн бұрын
NBA product getting better and better is EXTREMELY subjective. The skill level may be better than ever before, but the on court product and redundant style of play has frustrated if not turned off the interest for many fans.
@brewer921Күн бұрын
It's just a function of the schedule. NFL games are more rare, essentially one day a week. It's a ritual. NBA games are on every night. If they switched, the ratings would switch.

Guys get rebound -> Run down the court -> Stop and shoot 3. That is the entirety of the NBA product. You want to make the NBA interesting, take away the 3-point line again.

You gotta fire this Belloni guy if you’re Simmons don’t you? He’s supposed to be the smart insider and he just spent 40 minutes sounding about as dumb as a human being possibly can. If he’s this ignorant on so many topics how you can trust anything he has to say?

@@Maximilian1990 He didn't even know about the countries that were in the negotiations he was talking about. Having a basic grasp of geography for someone thats supposed to know about world businesses would be a good start. He's on spotify... ... ... which is based out of one of the countries he confuses in this pod. It's also a part of the deal he was asked to speak about. Completely egregious performance. Bill should have had a conversation with someone who knew what the heck they were talking about. He also didn't know about the important latin american countries in the deal. He is such an American cliche.
