I love how that first officer formed this relationship with these shoplifters, and more importantly, the shoplifters are respectful towards the officer.

To be truthful, the real thieves are the ones charging 80 pnd for a shirt. I suppose that might have something to do with shoplifters driving up the prices, but even w/o them they would still be charging 50 to 60, and that is still highway robbery. It comes into perspective when you realize that it likely cost that manufacturer about 2 pnd to make it in some sweatshop in India. However, you do have to wonder what certain items would cost if they didn't have to hire security and compensate for thefts, etc.
@greathey1234

80 quid for a shirt is extortionate but at least you have the option not to buy it.
@bermudaguy1
@bermudaguy1 9 жыл бұрын
Rob Robert How you know how much should be charged for that shirt? What credentials do you have to qualify that statement?Retail is an exchange of money for items desired. The problem is there are too many people who don't have a fuckin clue about business and feel entitled to have things outside and above their pay grade. Too expensive? Don't fuckin buy it!
@robrobert9541
@robrobert9541 9 жыл бұрын
bermudaguy1 Have you been living under a rock for the past thirty years? There have been countless NEWS stories about sweat shops in India, etc who pay the workers pennies a day for products that are ultimately sold for hundreds of dollars. The chocolate industry is infamous for using slave labour, etc. Furthermore, you have no idea to whom you're making this comment. I could be a multiple business owner, for all you know. If I feel a shirt, or any other product is too high priced for what it is I DON'T buy it, but that's completely beside the point I was making. The price of everything is based upon what the market will bear. And prices are arrived at by everyone charging similar extravagant prices for similar products. You have to wear _something_. If you want to pretend you're so knowledgable regarding business that you can dispute my comment, and if that makes you feel self-important, by all means - enjoy yourself. But don't expect everyone to buy what you're selling, partner. You have great day.
@bermudaguy1
@bermudaguy1 9 жыл бұрын
Rob Robert Are you concerned about the labor for "pennies per day" or the cost of the merchandise? Seems to me that you'd be happy to buy some Armani or Hugo Boss for cheap....yes?Tell me who is getting these cheap labor costs for high-end stuff. I'd love to know?Do you know or just giving your opinion.
@robrobert9541
@robrobert9541 9 жыл бұрын
bermudaguy1 I couldn't give a shit about Hugo Boss or Armani. I am not one of the sheep that buys something simply because everyone is else is buying it. I buy the cheapest clothing I can buy that doesn't bear any logos on it. I think it's pretty obvious who's getting the high end stuff for cheap - the manufacturer who put their name on it.

I worked for a charity shop."Free" if you don't factor in the store's rent, the paid employees, the cost of managing volunteers, processing donations where people "donate" their dirty, worn and sometimes peed on and pooped in clothes and home goods. The time that takes in addition to processing the "donations" to tagging items, placing them in the store, organizing them, ringing them up and the cost of cash registers etc and the enormous cost of having someone to remove the shocking amount of trash people "donate" because they're lazy and want to get a tax credit and feel smugly that they've given to charity. The shoplifting was so bad in our church run thrift store that I put up an old picture of Jesus with a caption underneath it that read, "It makes Jesus cry when you shoplift from a charity" in the dressing room. Volunteers thought that was heavy handed until someone stole the picture and then they removed the dressing room altogether. Charity shops pay all of what retail stores do except for their merchandise most of which as it's "donated" is unusable. In fact, shoplifting from a charity seems even more low and mean.

Shop lifters think they're not hurting anyone with their stealing, but they're hurting everyone because the stores have to raise their prices to cover the loses. I can understand someone shop lifting out of desperation, that doesn't make it right, but I can understand it. But those who choose that as a way of life is another story.They need to revert back to medieval times, the first time they chop off one finger, the second time, two fingers, and so on a so forth. That's what they should do to the professionals who make a living at shop lifting. They also need to increase jail time and the amount of fines for the crime.

Here in the states they are really hard on petty thefts... I was busted stealing a 8 dollar mag light from Walmart and they gave me four years on 80%, which I ended up doing three years and some change, but that broke me of ever stealing anything from anybody ever again... @@franktrautman2092 The minimum for felony shoplifting in Michigan is now $950, anything below that is a misdemeanor. You would need to have several priors before you would do significant time on misdemeanor shoplifting. They are right, shoplifting isnt murder but then murder doesnt drive up the cost of goods we spend money on every day. Shoplifters affect the lives of everyday people way more than murderers do. Friend of mine used to ride to work with me and he was so bad about stealing I wouldnt let him walk in a store when he rode with me. Here in GA you can be sitting in the car having never walked in the store, the person riding with you can steal some thing and you both get arrested. I dont know if the charges will stick but I still dont want to be arrested for some BS like that.

John, that LPO was not good at all, and he is a nightmare waiting to happen. You could have sue him and the store for coming at you at accusing you or even express his suspicion in regards to a shoplifting activity. The law indicates that an LPO has the obligation to keep you in his sight AT ALL TIMES from the time you picked up the item. If he lost sight of you even for few seconds he is not allowed to pursue with the mater, exactly for the reason you just described. In those few seconds you placed back the object, and that could led to false arrest, defamation, emotional distress, etc. If the suspected shoplifter it happens to be a visible minority,, ,, the damage can be even bigger. If following the false arrest injuries have occurred as result of being forcefully detained and/or placed in handcuffs, and/or the suspect was in impossibility to take his/her medication, the store's nightmare begins.....you got the picture

Personally as LPO I would preffer letting ten suspected shoplifters go than falsely accusing a single patron. 10 shoplifters can take merchandise from 500 to 1000. A lawsuit can cost the store in excess of 10,000. I know for fact, in Sussex, England, a falsely accused patron was awarded by the court £31,500

She stole. It's against the law. You have no idea if this lady has been doing this her whole life. I saw a program about a sweet looking little old lady who had been in prison for being a coke dealer and who had been a crack head for 16 years after. Age doesn't wash away one's sins

Not if you consider that its not the specific perpetrators they're targeting, its the entire phenomenon of shoplifting, which has much increased bc of the recession. A few accessories nicked from Claire's isn't a big deal on its own but if thousands of ppl are all doing it here and there, it is. It affects the livelihood of ppl working in retail and businesses.

I was under the impression that the UK and especially London were quite literally saturated with CCTV cameras just... everywhere, like some Orwellian nightmare. I wondered how someone could even think of getting away with anything... then I remembered the sham of a legal system they have where even murderers get a smack on the wrist and sent on their merry way. Now don't get me wrong, my country's legal system is abhorrent and I don't deny this, but you'd think there would be a happy medium somewhere in between the death penalty and "Oh, you brutally murdered someone? We'll sentence you to 5 years but you only have to serve 3... that sound fair?"
@wesleyp3024
@wesleyp3024 Жыл бұрын
they should raise the sentence every single time they get caught. these people are getting slaps on the wrist. 4 months? id say the first offense should be 1 day in jail, 10x the value of whats stolen as a fine and 1 year probation. the next time your caught it should be 1 month in jail 10x the value stolen as a fine and 2 years probation, the 3rd time you are caught it should be a walk of shame through the streets in your underwear for 24 hours without food, water, rest or sleep while being whipped if you dont comply, 1 year in prison 25x the value stolen and 5 years probation. and the same sentence every time after. if probation it violated the entire probation term should be served as a prison sentence. the fines should be collected and used to restore losses from shops.
