My main issue with a LOTR style film prologue is that it might be hard to film in a manner that doesn't come across as "dry" (pun not intended). The LOTR prologue worked because it was fairly dynamic and moody, and showed just about enough, but the viewer didn't feel like they were having things explained to them, but rather told an old tale or someone reminescenting of what they know or heard.

It's only if the franchise grows further (in the wake of Part II and the lead-up to a third film (of Dune Messiah) - that will have to wait a few years according to DV, given other projects and the need for Chalamet to age a bit - that I could even imagine an extended cut release (whether overseen by the director or not) to keep the audience fires burning in the meantime...

Drunk Duncan confronts Jessica is so important to the story. Hoping to see it in extended cut. The fact that they did not do the dining table scene, really undermined telling the story. I understand it is expensive and time consuming to do a formal dining scene right but it was a pivotal piece of the plot development showing the dynamics of Dune and Paul's coming of age and Jessica's training and role in House Atreides. Finally, the scene of Thufir Hawat confronting Jessica in her room includes the key to Herbert's entire series by showing the Bene Gesserit strategic thinking openly for a brief glimpse. Since they will show Hawat's capture, they should have laid the foundation for it with his talk with Jessica after the Drunk Duncan scene. That scene is pivotal to the rest of the story. So I love the movie because of the aesthetics which are beautifully done, but they skipped essential pieces of the plot.

Denis is adamant that the theatrical cut is the director's cut, but I'd love to see an extended edition like we saw with the LOTR editions some day.

Rali, it's been a while since I have seen these videos of yours. So thank you so much for this video. Second, watching this video... I gotta say: the amount of details you have established are so crucial that this film indeed deserves an extended edition like the LOTR trilogy. I'd pay a couple of bucks to see an extended edition in theatres especially in IMAX. I really hope they do release an extended edition before part 2 comes out bc I feel like the amount of footage that Denis Villeneuve had to exclude in the final version was so crucial that I felt a lot of people's questions went unanswered. I've watched the film, and I felt like I was watching the LOTR trilogy all over again. Overall, an extended edition would be a wise idea. Once again, thank you so much for the content. Keep up the great work.

My pleasure. Thank you for all your support. I agree with you and I'd love to see an extended cut or the deleted scenes in full at the very least.

Just found your channel! Lots of interesting deleted scenes. I read the Dune books decades ago, and would like to read your analysis of this version of Jessica. I was somewhat put off by her emotional responses --- her exaggerated facial expressions, weeping, and critique of Paul's use of the Voice....(which, after all, saved them from the Harkonnen assassins in the ornithopter.) Rebecca Ferguson's Jessica seems to lack the self control and regal bearing of Francesca Annis (from David Lynch's Dune). ----- Anyone else?
@secretsofdune2 жыл бұрын
No I hear you and I actually agree. I would have liked to see a much more cold, poised, calculating Bene Gesserit in Jessica, while still retaining her love for her duke and her son. I feel that We got humans of today transported to the Dune universe in 10,191 AG rather than seeing evolved humanity of 10,191 AG with the changes that those universal events would create in humans. Of course humanity still express emotions, but I think they could have portrayed that differently.

@@secretsofdune -- That's what was so formidable about Francesca Annis: her Jessica was regal, formidable, and dignified. Extremely calculating, but devoted to her Duke. Kyle McLaughlan's Paul had the physical attributes of a military education (ramrod straight posture) and --- while not muscle bound, was an effective killing machine. He portrayed the reserve and regal demeanor as well. Timothy Chalumet will need months of training to adopt the muscle he needs. The 2 other characters, Thufir Hawat and Pieter deVrise were equally unimpressive in this version. Who can forget Pieter's litany in Dune 1984 (which is not in anywhere in the book) " It is by will alone I set my mind in motion....etc." Genius screenplay. Oh, well! If this franchise goes to 12 films, they have plenty of opportunities to screw it up. Did NOBODY in the cast read the books except Javier Bardem and Babs Olusanmokun? Rebecca's Jessica is more conflicted than Frank Herbert's: After Paul kills Jamis, Chani takes Paul to the Reclamation Chambers, explaining Paul must accept Jamis' water. Paul is uncomfortable with that, and tells Jessica he want to refuse acceptance. Jessica tells him he will accept Jamis' water -- not because she opposes his will, instead to indicate there are ramifications he has not considered. As a result, Paul accepts Jamis' water. Frank Herbert built unity and trust between mother and son. I submit this version of Dune fails to show this. It's an important point. Without that trust, Paul could not grow to be the man he becomes.

Dennis doesn’t do deleted scenes because he knows they are incredible and everyone would be disappointed they were in there. Like the gurney fight scene switching from him to Paul and Jessica. That would have been awesome. And his first spice visions being more than Zendaya would have been better. Actually explaining how he knew she was pregnant

The voiceover prologue in combination with some of the other deleted scenes, like the extended Paul-Duncan-dialogue, would've been tremendous even though it might have felt very similar or copied from to LOTR prologue.

I'm glad they didn't start the movie with a ton of exposition. Way to kill an introduction. If you want to hear an audiobook, just get the audiobook (Honest Trailer reference here). I recommend it too, Dune is a great book

Did any of such scripts include... ...the beetle shot in the Duncan vision?

None of them do, which seems as though it was a spur of the moment inclusion and not something that was consciously decided in the filmmaking process.

Awww, the story of Krypton shown by Jor-El in Man of Steel! I agree that exposition adds vitality if done right, esp in an epic story.. maybe Villeneuve needs a team of equals to debate the structure.. tho I don't know of Peter Jackson was any more democratic but get feeling was a wider team..and was more flexible!?
