We make our tomatoes into a delicious green tomato and chilli chutney plus we start making some gates for the entrance to our Portuguese off grid homestead 🇵🇹

You could put a wheel at the end of each gate to stop them from saging ,the cladding will make them heavy putting a strain on the hinges 😊

Absolutely, learned that lesson. As soon as they were talking about how they were going to build the gates and showed us the cladding I thought those gates are going to be heavy and sag, plus be heavy for the children to open and close.

The recipe is 1.5 kg of tomatoes Garlic I used about 8 cloves Gingers two thumbs worth Chilli I used about 8 but depends on the chilli and your taste Splash of fish sauce or Worcestershire sauce 600g sugar 300ml vinegar Sorry all a bit vague as I made it up as I went along but let me know how it goes ☺️ Have a great week too! Great job guys. We did gates like yours that were 8 meters total and the weight was too much on the side posts so maybe consider putting wheels on each gate so that not all the weight is on the hinges which with time would twist the posts…we had to change the whole gate system on the 2nd year because with the winter rain in Chile (that looks a lot like what you get in Portugal) the gates would be heavier than in the summer which created more issues with the posts, hinges and doors. Looking forward to seeing your end project. Missed the kids saying their 3 Portuguese words this week 😊

If I may give you a tip for planting your tomatoes next year. Put a Tbls of blood meal or bone meal in the hole in which you plant your starter plant.bury as much of the plant in the soil even if you have to plant it horizontally. This will promote root growth and your plants will be sturdy and healthy. Just remove the lower leaves that would be in the soil. The more roots the stronger your plants will be.

Love your videos, and I was going to give you some advice from my experience while growing vegetables in the 1970/80s in Africa. How to prevent and treat early blight of your tomatoes. This is a nasty fungus and you must check it daily if you want to have a successful crop. It will not kill the plant, but will reduce your yield, that’s why you must your tomatoes carefully. If you use a copper fungicide dust, it will kill the infections early, before it starts to spread. If untreated like what has happened in your case, this fungal disease will cause your crop to rot. Late blight can kill your tomatoe plants quicker and will spread rapidly for miles. If you only see a few infected plants, best to pull them out and burn them, never put them into a compost as a general rule. I never grow tomatoes with eggplants, potatoes and peppers alongside each other. Use companion planting methods and use herbs even marigolds around your tomatoes. If you are not allowed to burn your rubbish on your plot/farm holding, then the next best thing is use black plastic in full sun all day cover with soil cover then cover with black plastic, making sure you cover all the edges of the black plastic with soil and put stones around the edge. No sticks, or grass, cuttings at all for at least two months. This will bring a very high temperature which will capture radiant energy from the sun to kill off the pathogens. Hope you have a better crop next season. Hope that helps.

Just love the idea about turning all your tomatoes into a chutney. Just a tip, when using apple cider vinegar, it’s always good to use natural RAW UNPASTEURISED cider vinegar it should be a little darker in colour with the sediment still visible, and a few pepper corns. Just a thought.

Turn up at your neighbours farm and help out, you will learn sooo much and how the locals grow things and get success. She will open up if you pop over once a week and might let Badger do the heavy stuff as well as being a taxi. Being part of the community is looking out for your neighbours as well as them giving you fresh produce. Love Pudding's teepee. Lol Kayla, just rename the car Tractor trailer ;) and 4 wheels going over the lawn was better than 6 - 4 tractor, 2 trailer 😋. Gate looking good. you could have them the other way, so instead of a V shape at the top, it could be a triangle, with the smaller side being next to the post, think it is worth a look at both ways. Tomatoes grow in warm soil. So in cooler months you can grow them in the greenhouse. Look into companion planting so the bugs keep each other in check.

Sorry but I just would like to make short comments You already made one gate, why do you need to wait one week to make the other gate? took you few hours, just please finish the gate and the job is completed. Please, do you realise how lucky you are in having all that amount of water in your property? Instead for you to keep moving the trailer and trying to charge your solar pannels You need to divert the water, build reservoir and install the Turbine you purchased and you will have power for the property all year!!! Yes you need to keep all the water chanels clean and running at full Have look on youtube, lots of videos how to intall the Turbine Good luck

Do you think it might be easier to build the gate after the posts are installed? Boulders and other stones may affect the post placement so your gate measurements may be more accurate.

I dont know why u dont put a floor in that massive shed and close in the walls to live in and still have room at the end for a small shop.. Because it will take a year or longer to get help on the stone ruin unless ur husband takes on the task of doing it himself because every Portugal channel it is hard to find workers!!! So u and ur husband can start urself pour ur own footers to start building ur tiny home because in this day and time if u dont take on the work urself u will freeze come winter..😊

It’s a great idea but the barn isn’t fit to live in and would take a lot of work and money to do so even if it was a temporary solution..we have a ground worker confirmed so hopefully work will start soon ☺️ Thank you for watching!

Not if the the jars have sealed properly after making but once it’s opened I keep in the fridge ☺️
