This is one of the most amazing build videos I have seen, because of the the way they construct the walls out of huge blocks of granite, almost like it was giant Lego. The corner stones are particularly impressive. I also love your design, which is perfect for the existing house and the location, and for your needs. We can see how in love you are with the old building, so of course it will be a shock at first to see a different space and with new retaining walls. Your natural fears at this stage are part and parcel of you being custodians of this lovely old building. But with the use of the correct materials, as here, you'll soon get used to the new look - and the great views! In time, the surrounding nature - including any new planting you do - will adapt to the bigger building and it will soon look like it has always been there. And what a unique opportunity this is, to recreate a family home for a new era.

You are respecting the Portuguese way of living and that is so important when we are the foreigners in another country. I have been living here in Italy from 1969. Put yourselves out and learn quickly your new language, it was easy for me once I got married and my husband refused to learn English although he came to understand it. I taught myself and speak better Italian than many Italians. It’s so beautiful listening to your kids speaking Portuguese. Good luck with everything

Hello from the he other side of border across the river Minho in Spain. I am so glad you decided to extend the house with the same materials as the original. In 3 or 4 years it will be weathered and would look almost as the original. Houses of stone is the system used for centuries. Large stones houses were of a higher category than those build with small ones, at least in northern Portugal and nort west Spain. Keep us posted of the progress. Would love to have the contact numbers of your builders.

The walls are looking amazing! It's really going to almost double that house's footprint! And being a tourist in your own area is an often-overlooked opportunity; my husband and I love to take a day or two during our summer holidays and spend them as tourist in our local city (Zürich, Switzerland) - you can discover hidden nooks and crannies in a new way, and learn to appreciate that the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence!

when those stones were delivered it looked as if you were rebuilding the pyramids!!! what a beautiful project! so nice that you keep the flair of the old house (how on earth did those people move the stones without a modern JCB?) Cannot wait so see those two stunning climbers around your outdoor kitchen entrance, left is a bougainvillea (in Brazilian Portuguese it's called primavera, spring), the other one is a dipladenia (or mandevilla), here in Ireland unfortunately just an indoor plant (which makes no sense, should it climb under the ceiling of a living room!?) I got the goosebumps when you mentioned Ireland, cheers to those lovely three young humans from the Green Isle!

It surprises me how big the stones are for the walls. No wonder they last thousands of years. They work like that in the keys the islands . If it’s good fishing they may not show up for a few days.
