The Space Launch System will be the most powerful rocket Nasa has ever built.
The SLS is intended to become the successor to the retired Space Shuttle as the primary launch vehicle of NASA's deep space exploration plans through the 2020s and beyond. Crewed lunar flights are planned as part of the Artemis program, leading to a possible human mission to Mars.

Excellent work with this - the shedding the exterior on the crawler was a nice touch 👏. It may be a complete waste of money with limited potential, but the sheer scale of it is impressive. I can't wait to feel the ground shake in Florida when it launches.
@rwboa22
@rwboa22 2 жыл бұрын
It might be the only option as Elon hasn't gotten the full Starship stack off the ground yet. (Still testing the vacuum version of the Raptor engines.) Besides, Aerojet Rocketdyne is working on a version of the RS-25 engine that would be less expensive to build, yet still give the same performance as the Shuttle-flown engines.

Complete waste of money? Nasa is building SLS by reusing completely tested failproof components of their previous missions. Whatever Spacex and other players building might be all new and impressive but none of their technologies are tested in real time let alone having decades of flying time. No one other than NASA has deep space exploration experience. So whatever they are building is always value for money. Falcon Heavy had one launch for Mars and it's payload is off the orbit. Do you trust spacex to put humans to Mars?
@manjunathdanavadi3573
@manjunathdanavadi3573 2 жыл бұрын
@@NittoNba44Only absurdity about Space Shuttle was it's cost. But cost ballooned because USAF got involved in it's development with ridiculous requirements. Other than that, Space Shuttle is still an engineering marvel, Which can be built and used even today. And no other company, not even Spacex can build a marvel like that.
@stephen_101
@stephen_101 2 жыл бұрын
@@manjunathdanavadi3573 Technical merit and affordability are two separate things. The contractors building SLS are high enough tier that I think it'll be operationally successful. However you can't ignore the way these contractors are raiding taxpayers wallets with their over the top pricing. $1 billion per launch is a financial crime in this day and age. SLS is a jobs program and the fact it's using 1970s shuttle tech yet is so expensive is an embarrassment. Yes, I believe SpaceX could safely put humans on Mars and return them back home safely on a regular basis within the next 15 years, if not much sooner. I do not see Starship and SLS as competitors though, rather complimentary systems.

However, it was scaled down to its real-life version when they realized that the warhead size could be significantly reduced!

@Double_Vision

@@UlmDoesAnything I'm unsure as to what precisely you mean by sustainability, but if refueling is the only way to complete a mission, then it becomes a moot point. I have yet to see an accurate depiction of how solid rocket boosters actually drain... Surely the "fire" at the top of the booster does NOT move down the tube, from top to exit, at the same speed than the "fire" at the bottom does. Instead, it is slower at the top and accelerates as it moves downwards towards the "exit" nozzle, as the top "fire-particles" join more and more "fire-particles" on their way to the exit. Simple physics! Other than that, great work mate. Don't let my criticism deter you from making more content. This kind of depiction on solid rocket boosters is actually a very common error, not just on your part, but in general! I think even NASA showed an illustration of how a SRB drains and they showed it exactly the same way. I suppose it is much easier to show it this way. For me, it would be much nicer to see how it actually drains in reality: with the exit gasses accelerating as they move down the tube and not going at the same speed from top to bottom.
