@@TopPinOutdoorsx That's what I like to hear far shots still going through bones. BUT I saw several test that people had and the say they are not as accurate as stated by QAD as field point accurate. Plus out of 3 in the pack they said when each of them was weighted they was all different in weight. I use a ravin crossbow and am thinking about getting them but when I heard or saw the accuracy test and how much each head was off in weight wise to each other it turned me off a little. But I am still thinking about trying them but not 100% sold on them.

This is by far one of the coolest and most interesting videos I’ve seen on KZbin in a while! As a chemist I appreciate everything you are doing to scientifically make a better broad head, from a hunters perspective I appreciate the physically testing for worst case scenario in the field. The only comment I have is that a shoulder blade is not behind 8 inches of flesh in a deer. Obviously an Exodus kicks ass in almost all circumstances, but your rage might give you a different story if you were hitting the scapula 1 inch deep and then still got 8 more inches into the vitals. When you are only getting 16ish inches of penetration, you have burned through half the arrows energy before you contact the scapula. I think you also need to compare them all going first through cardboard. That will be robbing energy from the rage the others didn't suffer. There is real effort involved cutting cardboard with a razor/box cutter. Same would be true for the broad heads. I love your videos. Keep up the good work.
@mikemcgill3998

I'll 2nd that. The scapula isn't that deep. They could put a scapula at each end of the block and get twice the use. Awesome testing but there's still tweaks.

I like the test...the one area I believe that is the weakness of the test...the bone itself...I understand it had to be dry to have it implemented, but a dry bone is nothing like a live bone. The shattering and breakage you saw is due to dry. A live bone is more fibrous and dense. I believe that may have different results
@incognito5986

You’re correct, moist bone doesn’t shatter as readily, and it tends to be “grabby” on edges of blades.

Excellent thought went into developing this content. I believe an archers goal is to achieve a full pass thru every time. I decided awhile back that balance is my number one objective in my set up. Speed vs momentum, penetration vs cutting diameter. Either extreme will achieve results for the designed situation but, a well balanced arrow will let you both accurately shoot at range and achieve significant penetration. Same reason I stay away from expandables. They’re designed to accomplish one job extremely well, but they sacrifice too much in penetration to be a relative option in my opinion.

Guys great job. I am a long time hunter the rage head seems to provide one heck of a hole through a deer. If you hit the shoulder most likely you will not get a pass through the deer will bleed to death internally when you open them a 5 gal bucket of blood comes out. When you hit them just off the shoulder and get a pass through blood goes everywhere. Take your time and make the best shot possible. I know that my skill is limited to 30 yards. Good job on taking the time to show the difference between the heads. They all make a killing wound.

Again and again Cut On Contact Fixed Blade. If you are unsure of which broadhead to use just get any decent cut on contact fixed and get out in the woods. It's a no-brainer (to this guy). No one should be surprised at these results. This is all just opinion, but personally I can't understand anyone putting a wide mechanical razor blade on the front of an arrow and going out into the woods praying you don't hit bone. Keeping in mind that this test was performed with a fairly heavy setup! Lots of momentum and FOC with a mid 500 grain arrow at 70 pounds! And it still couldn't push the mechanical through.

I used to torture test every broadhead I bought. I destroyed more heads than I really want to think about, including the Exodus. The only head I have used that has stood up to ridiculous abuse has been the Cutthroat. I split a cow femur into two pieces with a Cutthroat 150 grain and the arrow penetrated the foam target another 12-14 inches. The edge had some chatter, but it was resharpenable. The VPA heads are great, too. People used 2-blade fixed heads to cleanly kill animals for a long time before the modern broadhead craze. I like to keep things simple. Shot a bull elk with a 2-blade VPA in 2019. He ran 50 yards and piled up. Love the one piece machined broadheads over the replaceable blade type.

As an engineer and hunter that was a fantastic video. I switched from mechanicals to fixed in my new setup. Shot a medium sized doe last week. Quartered on heavily inside of 20 yards. I went thru the top of the scapula, lung, everything connecting the pump station, guts, and into the rear quarter. Head broke off lodged in the femur, partially breaking the joint. I was very impressed plus the broadhead was intact, with very minor damage to the tip which could be fixed and re-used as a backup.

I like the theory on this. One question though or observation is the amount of gel in front of the shoulder blade vs the amount of meat, hide in front of the shoulder blade. There is only 1-2 inches on an animal tops and you have 4+ inches of gel. I feel that would make a penetration difference and the Rage is at a disadvantage on the test. Thank you guys great info.

Up to 3" on a deer and more on a Moose. Add a layer of deerskin or elk leather glued to the face. To simulate the dulling effect. And to demonstrate how wide blades lose more speed punching big holes in thick hide vs narrower broadheads. The flint stone arrowhead guys hunt with 3/4 or 7/8" wide arrowheads. Very narrow, right at the state legal lower limit for cutting width. They get full pass-thru shots routinely, shooting only 50-70 grain stone heads on medium weight shafts. Maybe 450-550 grains. They don't split bone but can wedge buried in a spine and be very lethal for all except square on shoulder hits.

Am I the only guy that would also like to see x2 or x3 of the same head fired? I feel like it will eliminate any accidental human error, if the same head out performs every time that tells me a lot more than 1 head. Again you could have had the perfect shot showing maximum penetration, then take a not as good of a shot on the next head making the performance look worse than it actually is but you won't know it with 1 shot. I really think we need to set a new standard, I know it cost more but I want to see variance eliminated. If we sight in rifles with groups of 3 I feel like that is again the same idea, how can you gauge accuracy with one shot? So even with bows we take 3, but man I'd love to see these penetration tests done with 2 or 3 shots.

Love you tests. The shoulder blade is upside down. Most people hit the knuckle joint or just above. I once used a broadhead 20years ago called dead ringer. It had 3 thick blades on a split ring. It slid up the tip in groves upon impact. Hands down the best mechanical made. Make this and I will buy it.

Great videos guys. There’s two things I’d like to ask for future videos. One would be standing say at 15-20 yards for a realistic distance but more importantly for me and some people out there would be shooting about a 50 pound draw weight so people who are disabled or smaller statue or younger can get a good idea on what’s going to happen. I have not come across anybody on KZbin that is doing that. Again great video and I think extremely beneficial and important.

Thank you so much for sharing this video... I just found it about 9 months later and I must say I'm impressed. I do have 1issues for you though. The dried out scapulas you used do not perform accurately to the to live ones, which are softer on the surface, much more flexible, and more spongy in construction than when they are dried out. This added flexibility adds to the issue you are researching. I believe you have shown why fixed blades end up being better when things aren't perfect. When things are perfect, any broadhead will work, but we have to plan on hitting bone, cartilage, and the vitals. I'm definitely not perfect, but I try... You guys can help a lot of hunters do even better. I wish you great success. I currently hunt with VPA single bevel 250gr broadheads.

That is a good design imo, love the tip for strength and ease of sharpening. The testing that I want to see done is the "new" smaller (not 3to1 ratio) heads on bone vs the 3:1 aspect. The thought is that the shorter head offers les drag on the hard bone impacts. Proper testing is needed.

I’ve shot right thru the spin on a straight down shot and have shot thru the shoulder as well with great success if love to see you guys add that blade to the line up. I shoot the 1.5 the 2” is just to much to punch thru bone or like you guys explained those sharp angles. But the sevr I feel does better in the sharp angles cause of the pivoting head design. And lastly the blades are way more stout than the rage I’ve never lost a blade on my sevr heads and I’ve seen many rage blade lose a blade or both in bone and even a rib.

Honestly I believe you may have picked one of the most questionable mechanicals out there. I know you didn't like the screw came loose on the NAP killzone but it performs as good or better than any other mech on quartering shot. The screw coming loose is a dab of loctite and fixed. Also having said all of that the rage would have still made it to vitals no problem. The scapula is far closer to the surface and actual cavity of a deer is far less restrictive than ballistics gel. You're getting to vitals and that deer is dead.

I apparently was wrong about the Exodus. It did not look like it would hold up and perform as well as some other designs when dealing with bone, and was still a more modest cut if you had a clean shot. I'll have to look into the flight qualities, but for the typical short range shot that is less important. Glad I took the time to watch this through.

I know it may seem counterintuitive, but y'all may want to look at arrow head designs from further back in history. Martial use arrows had to break and cut through so much moreto be terminally effective on their targets than hunting broadheads today and perhaps combining the reinforced, swelled tips of medieval broadheads with the super thin edges of the blades of today might get you the combination of bone splitting and flesh cutting that we're looking for in a best case broadhead.
@HuntingCreatures

for next tests. If you guys could get some deer hide at front of the ballistic gel, then place the scapula, then two rib bones in similar position as it's in the rib cage, then some kind of balloon with liquid (to represent the lungs with blood 🩸)... I think that will be a more realistic setup. But so far, this video was great. Very informative and kudos to the company inviting to use their equipment for our gain.

IMO, if the hunting arrow anyone is using won’t bust thru a deer scapula you probably don’t need to be bow hunting. A deer scapula isn’t very thick at all except for one elongated rib down near the joint.

What Lee said is a personal opinion. I shot a doe last year with a rage hypodermic as a quartering away shot and that deer ran less than 30 yards. I broke both shoulders on impact along with taking the lungs and heart out. It’s personal preference and also if you practice a lot at that angle. Another factor is the total arrow weight which can play a huge role

You also might consider (if you haven't already) the fact that a bone in an animal is living tissue and would be more pliable than a bone that is not in a live and animal that is dry (especially if it has been frozen), therefore more brittle. I still think your test are informative and help with what you are working to accomplish. 👍 But, I'm also a science geek but have a few too many concussions to be in the science fields. 🤷‍♂️
