Hands down favorite,the Gibson Les Paul Benchmark. Love the deep dark blue,what I would call a true blue. I would like to have one made in bold emerald green,but would be a happy fat camper rocking the blue LP. A close second is the 59 LP Jr as I love natural wood guitars. If I had it the neck would be replaced with an SG style very slim neck,locking tuners,locking wrap bridge which would intonate all 6 strings,a hot hum cancelling Duncan Dogear soapbar.
@bPcrazydave4 жыл бұрын
The bridge on the Jr has sliding plates to adjust intonation, the two screws lock the plates down. I’d rock that guitar for about $500. There’s nothing original left. I personally don’t see any vintage value. It’s just a player, and a rough one, but I bet it sounds good.

I bought the LP Jr/Melody Maker after watching the WYRON- took a gamble, I like weird stuff- It arrived today- and the photos don’t do it justice. The neck replacement is well done- it’s set really well- and what looks like screws might actually be just dowels- either way the holes are filled- so it’s pretty flush. Also the original color was most likely TV Yellow- there’s a few traces of it around the neck joint. It sounds awesome too through my Fender twin- the Lollar has a great sound. Going to do a few mods- ordered Kluson tuners, pickguard, truss rod cover, and a control cavity plate. Debating about whether to have it restored to TV Yellow or leave as-is.

I have to admit I'm intrigued by the Chet Atkins with the Bigsby. A few years ago, as company called B.A. Ferguson was selling acoustic guitars with a tremolo system on them that was specifically designed for acoustics. I saw a few videos of them here on YT and they sounded pretty good.

For me, it's a tie between the Chet Atkins, and the Denim Les Paul, which is absolutely stunning. The reason the Chet Atkins has a whammy, is because part of his style incorporated the use of said Bigsby. He thought that it would be a good idea to combine both elements.

My favorite is the denim. I actually have an old magnatone that was tolexed in a pair of jeans when I got it. I named it Levi. That guitar would match perfectly. I would also love to find that Chet at a store and play it so I can figure out what was in that person’s head when they did that. I might actually have to try that on the next cheap classical I find in someone’s garbage. Not a Chet though.

wilkinson makes a funky wraparound bridge thats "mostly compensated" or "partially intonatable" (depending on your perspective i guess) it has that same little adjustable deal, but only on the g & b strings.. i used one on a jrdc style guitar i built, for no other reason than that it looked like something from the 50's...

The first two guitars whoever did what they did to them should be put in stocks and flogged. Especially the hummingbird. I agree about that garbage neck repair. But the first guitar if I was going to model a melody maker I wouldn't strip it unless I was giving it a new paint job and if I'd model beyond I'd carve out for a pop at the neck and additional controls The first blue guitar I'd rather with gold or black parts the second I'm not a fan of the pastel sides much less the top and it's a strange mix between cream and the colored tuners. The chet atkins acoustic I don't recall ever seeing one but I could see somebody maybe even chet himself having used it to play slide and that would be the only reason I could see a tremolo system on such a guitar. Didn't know Gibson ever made a shallow acoustic. Reminds me of fenders acoustisonics
@charlesbolton84714 жыл бұрын
The Gibson Chet Atkins acoustics CE-classical electric nylon string model and the SST-steel string model were in production from the 1980s until the mid 00s. There was also an Epiphone version of the SST. The goal of the design was to build an acoustic electric guitar that was less prone to feedback with the playability of an electric guitar. The Taylor T5 was designed as an improved version of those Gibsons. Interestingly, the Gibsons went of production around the same time that the T5 came out. Of course, the new Fender American Acoustasonics were designed by the same guy who designed the T5 so they are an evolution (or at least an attempted evolution) of the T5. I’ve played all three Gibson SST, Taylor T5 (& T5z), and the Fender Acoustasonic Telecaster. Right now I still think that the Taylor T5z is the best of the group. However, I actually own a rare Gibson that was supposed to be the replacement for the SST. It was built in 2004 as a 2005 model (the only year they were available and the same year the T5 was introduced). It was part of a series that Gibson called the Americana Series which consisted of two models the Pioneer which was a similar shape to the SST with a cutaway and available as 6 string or a 12 string (the SST was also available as a 12 string and is rare) and Ranger which is shaped like an L-00. Both models have chambered mahogany bodies with a spruce top. They were available in two colors natural was an option for both and the Pioneer was available in vintage sunburst and the Ranger was available in saddle brown. Mine is a saddle brown Ranger.

I have two that have one or more specs that are from the year after they were made, a bass from 96 with in color that wasn't available until the 97 catalog and a 7 string from 99 that instead of being made in Japan with a one piece maple neck with skunk stripe and gotoh tuners it's made in Korea with a five piece maple/walnut neck and some in house ibanez tuners that are really difficult to find direct replacements for

The Hummingbird…as you say, priced way too expensive. I'm not sure what it should be priced at but I wouldn't even buy it for $400. I've got one such ugly neck break in my collection - an acoustic repaired by a family member - luckily the guitar isn't worth that much intact - even so I'd feel bad at selling it to someone for even $50. I figure - you break it - it's yours - forever. It was only many years later that I saw my first professional invisible neck break repair - beautiful work - amazing that it can be done so well. So that makes this Hummingbird all the most unfathomable.

Eeeew the headstock repair. And this is why not just anybody can repair a guitar. They literally put outdoor wood screws through it. The more holes you make in material the weaker it becomes, that will break again and that will make that a lot harder to repair the second time. Clamps and Tite-Bond is literally all the person needed for that. The Tite-Bond is glue commonly used in guitar making, it replaced Hide glue. Then once the glue dries and cures then you try to fill in the color crack it leaves behind with the right color. Its not that hard its just tedious and patience is required and a lot of it.
