“If I was to die tonight Would it tear you apart? Would you yell it from the rooftops, down Until it’s over and you’re older?” I’ve been a volunteer firefighter for 6 years from 17 to 23 years old. I revisited this song from my teen years and this line hit me like a ton of bricks. The few times I’ve experienced it, it’s always been an eerie feeling seeing the death of someone you don’t know. Obviously you care, another human has passed, but you still have a job to do and you push those feelings down. Sometimes when you get home, or two days later it hits you. It may be the chaos of what happened or the cries of a family member losing their son, husband, daughter, mother. Seeing a person lose their closest loved ones and seeing their world fracture into tiny pieces. It never leaves you. Sometimes it’s the guilt that you could have done something different or better to maybe have changed things. I just want you to know that someone out there cares about you more than know, whether it’s a family member or a complete stranger. If you were to die tonight, it would tear someone’s world apart. I wish a peaceful rest to those who didn’t make it and comfort to those who remain. May their memories live on.
