SOOOOOOOOOO many bangers to find here by the Omake tracks alone! Both the metal and the more seriously underrated techno like songs. It really sucks that Metal Squad usually gets all the atention tbh, really overrated track IMO. Don't Go Off, Fighting Back, The Sky Line, Sand Hell, Neo Weapon, Sea of Flame, pretty much all of the Boss tracks (Shoutout to War Like Requiem, way better than the final boss itself), Silvery Light of the Moon, Stand Up Against Myself, Knight of Legend (My favorite rendition of it depite being a really shortened high score screen track, really gives me chills), Omake 2-4, I'm seriously only mentioning my personal favorites here and it's already worthy of a whole playlist!

Old genesis tracks are the best. They were so forward thinking with their sound. All the little pitch bends. All the patches they were able to get. This game could never be the same on the :technically superior 'snes (don't get me wrong I love both machines) but it would be slower, be in a lower resolution, have less sprites on screen and the music would be err... Different, orchestral flat samples with reverb can't match the harsh, rocking crystal clear fm baddassery magadrive music

@Maru96
@Maru96 4 жыл бұрын
@@solarflare9078 TF3 wasn't even ported by the same guys so unfair comparison, Hagane would be a better comparison to technosoft games ironically. The console can do shmups just fine, MD is a bit better but sega fanboys tend to exagerate the gap, even TF4 itself slowdowns a lot.
@solarflare9078
@solarflare9078 4 жыл бұрын
Marcel Weber With TF4, I can tend to forgive the slowdown because it was pushing a lot of HUGE, well-animated sprites (most are 32x32 or bigger, including the explosions) and that I strangely seem to be getting less slowdown on higher difficulties, which may suggest the slowdown is intentional. (One spot in particular is the stage 2 miniboss; it slows down even if you check the option to disable it in the TF4 Switch port) [EDIT] Also, I think the comparison is fair, as I'm not referring to what the SNES *can* do with a TF4 port, but more likely what would happen *if* TF4 got a SNES port. There's been plenty of gimped ports to other systems in the past anyways, like the entire Strike series, with Jungle on SNES being the best of the 3 and Urban the worst.

@Chuck Stegall I meant across all platforms! The thing TF4 does which hasn’t really been done anywhere else is pace the game almost like a film. The ‘camera’, music and scenes somewhat tell a story. This is re-enforced by the end title sequence which is reminiscent of a film like Top Gun.

THE BEST shooter ever made. This game is a masterpiece. Regardless of your age, if you're a gamer you have to play this. This game hits you hard in every aspect. It's fast paced, it has great 16-bit graphics, the gameplay is responsive, the stages are well design and the transitions between stages are AMAZING with the next one immediately starting after you defeat the boss as the screen quickly fades and the song of the next stage immediately starts playing. Very cool! Speaking of songs I guess that's why we are all here. This soundtrack is absolutely fantastic. High tempo just like the game. This game starts on a high and stays on a high. Do yourself a favor and bump up the volume of your speakers before you play this masterpiece. You will not regret it.

Thanks for this great recording of the best Mega Drive soundtrack... ;-) It shows that the real YM2612 is more gentle and pleasant to the ear in generating sound content with high frequency harmonics, compared to emulators. The sound designers from Technosoft outdid themselves with this soundtrack, because it features both kick-ass compositions and truly outstanding FM patches, which, I think, are simply unmatched by any other soundtrack. This is the diamond class of FM synthesis. And, as with all the best FM soundtracks, it is completely free of samples, because the sound designers knew that you can make superior sounding drum patches with FM synthesis.
@ColgateLP
@ColgateLP 8 жыл бұрын
+porcorosso81 Yes indeed. The sound programmers at Technosoft managed it perfectly well to use echo channel's, melodic changes and correct use of PSG detuning. (and also used all 6 FM-Channels and the 3 PSG waves at once for their sound) Just think about the drum patches created with the only use of FM in any game from them.... I must say i have expierience in programming FM-Synthesis, but creating such drums (Bassdrum, Snare, Tom's) on only one channel and by patch change(?) is just sooo damn hard work! (And also saves a lot more space on the cartridge than PCM Samples.) Just for the soundscape creation from the game itself Mr. Yamanishi should be honored. (But i guess in japan they were able to learn the programmability of Yamaha's FM-soundchips for use in videogames. directly from Yamaha....or they had some 300 Page Manuals who were not able to be found these days.) Btw. I never thought in my childhood there could be more complexity with Mega Drive's sound hardware than Road Rash 3.....poor me. How technosoft made their music is just the like HI'fi Records among FM-synthesis. (especially if you thought "Take on Me" was a great example of what a FM Synthesizer's could offer....)
@porcorosso81
@porcorosso81 8 жыл бұрын
Mellow Notes I think the reason for superior sounding FM tracks from Japanese composers lies in the fact that there were multiple Japanese PC/Home Computers released with Yamaha's 4OP FM synth architecture (Yamaha CX-5M, Sharp X68000, PC88...). These people probably learned their craftsmanship by programming their own soundroutines very early on those type of computers. Maybe by using Yamaha's official documentation, but most probably also by disassembling and reverse-engineering other people's/companie's sound code. Of course, you could also do sound patch design on Yamaha's 4OP FM keyboards, which also share the same sound architecture (DX9, DX21, DX27, DX100). Some Genesis games actually use factory preset patches from Yamaha FM synthesizers. Anyway, Thunderforce IV is a class of it's own, and yes, the FM patches in games are generally much more sophisticated than what was used in actual music productions in the 80's. Even considering that they mostly used the superior 6OP sound architecture from the Yamaha DX7 synthesizer. Imagine if Yamaha ever decided to sell their 6OP FM sound architecture on the open market...
@DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL
@DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL 8 жыл бұрын
+porcorosso81 Agreed and well stated! I think the Japanese reaped the advantage of familiarity with the hardware and fertile home-computer 'hacking' environments giving them the chance to really become acquainted with what was possible. I've been having a lot of fun peeking into some of the tricks and implementing them myself, but that is another post for another day!
@porcorosso81
@porcorosso81 8 жыл бұрын
+DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL I can only imagine what would have happened if back in 1987, Adlib chose the YM2151 to become a PC music sound standard, instead of the much inferior YM3812 2OP FM synthesis chip. From time to time, I also get the urge to explore FM patch programming on my DX7. Each parameter opens so many directions to go that you can easily spend hours, even days to create a single patch. Knowing this makes me appreciate the Thunder Force IV track much more. It's a shame that FM got a really bad reputation due to overuse of DX7 preset sounds in the commercial music industry, and the choice of the YM3812 OPL2 in the western hemisphere as the PC sound standard. Did you know that Yamaha just released, after a long time, a new FM synthesizer this year? It's a 4OP FM synthesizer called "Reface DX" with modified user interface and architecture (each operator can have feedback)?
@ColgateLP
@ColgateLP 8 жыл бұрын
porcorosso81 Exactly. This is what i ment when it comes to programming FM-synthesizers. each parameter change gives a slight change in the outgoing sound. And to make so many (Very good) patches for a Game ... is just crazy...you can really tweek a whole week or longer for one good patch (especially when you have 6 instead of only 4 operators. what gives you more room to explore than someone would expect.) this is what make me gobsmacked when i hear a Track on the genesis thats so good "instrumentalised". But i heard ad-Lib had General MIDI capabilities....made it easy to play, but stupid to use. And i think many sound programmers became lazy with its soundchip. its very very difficult to get something useful out of 2-operators. (To say it wents from fart to noise very quick.) And well. When the DX7 came out 1984 the music producers went nuts for its price, (A Roland Juno 60 was still twice as Yamaha's price) bought one and had no clue of programming. (that's why you can identify a DX7 in 80's pop music. just by its stock patches.) for examlple "Bass.1" or "E-piano.1". Or on the 4-Op's the "Lately Bass" or on DX100/21 "Solid Bass" patch used acutelly in 90's dance and pop music basically good, but really went just so overused... Yes i heard about the "Reface DX" i think it is good step from yamaha to relive their classic series of instruments for people who want try (Reface CS, CP, YC and DX) but there is one thing i don't like about all of them....why are they so tiny....they have money to make bigger....(or to make a plug for a guitar strap.)

Arthur Oliveira Except it's not. If you're referring to the soundblaster (AdLib), I'd compare it more to the GEMS sound driver of the same system. Both can use MIDIs and edit them for their own sound system. Fortunately, neither TFIV or Jesper Kyd's OSTs used GEMS. (Actually, I'm dumb. I don't even think AdLib used MIDI. In fact, I don't think any FM synth in general except GEMS use MIDI)

nothing beats the growl of a model 1 2612, I love your channel and appreciate all the high quality rips! I'm glad this music can get more appreciation, it deserves it. also, some requests that I personally would love to hear on the genesis- Toy Story, The Adventures of Mighty Max, Warsong/Langrisser I, Magical Hat, Virtual Bart, Osomatsu-kun: Hachamecha Gekijou, Twinkle Tale, Moonwalker, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (fighter), Rent A Hero.

40:33 Down Right Attack (Stage 9) very memorable - the sudden switch midway from orchestra to rock threw me off first time. Shooters are hard enough for me as it is - they have to make it harder by distracting you with an awesome soundtrack.

This sounds much different from another video I listened to of this soundtrack. (The guy probably emulated it.) But I must admit, the addition of gameplay footage in his video was a nice touch. The gameplay was silenced though, of course.

+Moop Bread On the model 1 the high pitched distortion sounds (like in the beginning of the intro) are either cut out or much lower volume, and there's a bit more bass.

TF 4 and SOR 2 were my absolute favorites back in the days. TF 4 was a very well produced/presented MD game. (Like a top SNES game, we often looked at with envy). If I remember correctly I could beat TF 4 on the hardest grade without losing one life. I had a piece of paper with my high scores ’cause there was no game save. I loved to go to the menu and listen to the music for hours with my headphones on. My younger brother and me had very different taste for video games. (I think he never played TF 4 a single time - he just disliked shmups. But together we played the hell out of SOR 2). Too bad that I sold my MD. Could be that it was one with a good sound chip ’cause I got it rather early (SNES wasn´t around yet).

el mejor juego que tuve en mi megadrive, superjugable y la musica totalmente adelantada a su tiempo (en el mundo del videojuego me refiero) me encantaba. y ahora la puedo disfrutar aqui. que grande!!!! no es por tirarme flores, pero me pasaba el juego sin consumir apenas vidas y con un puntaje realmente alto. hace poco volvi a jugar con el en un emulador y quedo demostrado que perdi toda mi habilidad XDXD!!best game on my megadrive. i loved the hole soundtrack and now i can enjoy it here. thank you very much

Man I wish I could replace that Genesis with a good one like my Non-HDG VA6.5 for you or something. The VA7 should be burned at the stake but then again, it has the best video of all the model 1 systems. To have a perfect VA7, that's gonna require a Mega Amp.
