Episode Notes:
1. I wish I had more pictures of this era. Our family album fell victim to water damage some years back and it ruined a huge portion of our pictures.
2. I hope you enjoyed this. I'd love to do another next year focusing on 91/92.

I will forever be thankful for my mother. She passed away on November 1st this year after a 5 year battle with colon cancer, so this is my first Thanksgiving without her. She (along with my dad at the time) helped me get going in my appreciation for games and I'll never forget getting my Sega Genesis for Christmas in 1992. My parents would split a few years later, but mom was always there for me and worked hard so she could get the games I wanted for Christmas, or let me rent games at Blockbuster fairly often. Mom would always give me spare change to be able to go play games at the mall or even at the grocery store (remember when grocery stores had arcade games?). Something I started doing to remember her is to put her initials on the name entry screen instead of mine when I hit the leaderboards of my favorite arcade titles, rather it was at home or in public for all to see. I miss her so much and can't thank her enough for all she's done in my life.

this is the first thanksgiving without my mom, or any family of mine for that matter. She was 85% of ur story, she worked hard gave me an my sis everything. She passed this February and life aint the same. However she did buy me my first imports (Xmen Cota, DBZ Shinbutouden, Battle Arena Toshinden Remix) for Saturn. Technically she introduced me to import gaming. Love you mom, to all the great mothers who are with us still and those whom have passed. I speak for all of us LOVE YOU MOM

This story resonates with a lot of us, there are indeed many similarities and I believe we give many things much more value, or at least, a different perspective than later generations would understand. I'll say that even today, we don't need to look much into it, there are millions and millions of kids that would be in heaven with a black & white TV and an Atari 2600. Imagine a Master System, NES or Mega Drive. This is a bit weird to say it at this point, but well, it's true.

Lovely to hear you share this. I will never forget the Christmas when I got my megadrive with golden axe. I'm not sure if it was 89 or 90 in the UK. I'd wanted a console for years after loving the master system at my friend's house. My folks got me a Japanese megadrive by mail order plus golden axe on top plus a little tv. I felt the luckiest kid in the world. Was like a dream. So appreciate it. Then I got a master system converter with Christmas money and started to rent master system games from a local store. Great times :)

Thanks ❤ Got my first 14” colour TV when a neighbour put it outside their house. They had dropped it and the case has cracked open. I politely knocked and asked if I may look at fixing it. They told 12 year old me, Sue and if you can fix it you can keep it. I took it home reconnected the tube and used masking tape to stick the case back together. That TV served me from Zx spectrum, to Amiga, to NES, mega drive & CD32. I upgraded when I got my SNES. Only the SNES and mega drive were new Xmas presents the rest were all bargained for our swapped in one way or another 🙏 my kids have had iPhones since they were 2 😬🤦🏻‍♂️

I got chills listening to your story, bro. It wasn't easy being a gamer growing up middle class in Brazil. I remember we had a 2600 we got second hand from some relatives around 1996 (yeah, things arrived way later in South America). Then my parents saved enough for an SNES a year later, and a PS1 around 1999. The PlayStation was my main console for years on. My parents never could afford to get me a PS2, as it was almost the price of minimum wage at the time. Hearing you, brought me back like nothing else before. Thanks and keep up the amazing work.

6:03 Sega Lord X - " I knew what I had to do...." Altered beast "POWER UP!!" Nice edit my guy. God I miss my collection....this does make me sad that I had to sell it all in 2013 because of life.... Just so greatful for emulation at least and the amount of miles I got out those systems that were practically on 24/7. They were not mint condition and extremely well worn with issues when they went.... You were very lucky my guy with your mum. Same with me with my dad. He got me it all (im a bit younger than you) - but today he's 80 and suddenly got bowel cancer and I'm so scared of losing him.... He has always been here for me and my now wife and daughter even today... Make the most of your parents guys.... although I understand not all parents are loving and go all out.

I loved the origin story man! Mums are the best aren't they? My dad left my mum when I was 2, so mum bought us a Sega Mega Drive to keep us busy. I absolutely fell in love with it and it led to strong bonds between my family members and I. My dad eventually came back to live with us, but due to my and my brothers' dependence on our new 'Sega Mega Dad', my mum continued to buy consoles and games for us for years to come. I have my mum to thank for our Mega Drive, Saturn, PlayStation, Gamecube and first ever PC (that we told dad was for homework LOL), as well as my introduction to games like Diablo, Resident Evil, Sonic, Rayman, etc. Thanks for putting out awesome content bud!

Happy Thanksgiving Sega Lord X, moms are great. Your story is, for many I'm certain, one we can appreciate. I had a school field trip, for lunch we stopped at a Pizza Hut, I spent all my quarters on TMNT arcade, when we got to the gift shop of the trip, I couldn't buy anything. When I got home. I cried to my mom, saying I wasted my money, she asked did I have fun playing the game, I said yes obviously. She said to me it wasn't a waste. A powerful lesson. Atari to Nintendo, to Sega having limited resources and means...we have a greater understanding and appreciation for the blessings no matter how small. Love your vids, may many blessings come to you and yours.

Aww man what a beautiful video you put together and a nice way to pay tribute to your dear mother by showing how grateful you are to her for getting you through your childhood and into teenage years. Loved the family pictures and thank you for showing them. I think a lot of people give the impression that you're maybe rich because there's not many gamers out there that have had the time, funds and resources to play virtually anything and everything back then like you, from Atari 2600 all the way to XBox 360 and PS3. I for one have not been able to experience not even half of what you have in my 39 years of life. You're one of the very lucky ones and I wish you and your family all the best for the future.

There is so much of this video I can relate too. My early years like many were in a lower income type situation, and when my parents separated it made for some tough times. My NES was at my mom's and I played it on a small black and white TV for many years. However she was able to supply me with games due to working at a local video store and so when the games were being fazed out she was able to grab them. My dad would also indulge my passion later on and when I went to live with him, he would be the one to get a PlayStation, and introduce me to PC gaming. Everything worked out as it should, as both parties worked hard to get where they're at today, and also instilled that work ethic. Thank you for sharing your story my friend, and happy Thanksgiving

Indeed, really pays to think about what you're thankful for. My best friend ended up taking his own life two weeks ago, and our nightly routine was to gather into my bedroom, and play Gunstar Heroes. Your mom sounds a lot like mine. In my case, my parents separated when I was about 2 years old, so my mom took me and my older sister to live with my grandparents in the projects because she couldn't afford a place on her own at the time. 3 years later, we did get our own place, but it was still public housing because she just didn't make the kind of money to afford something better. In spite of that, she was still able to make ends meet while also nurturing my love for gaming. I don't know how she managed it, but I was very lucky to get two games a year (birthday & Christmas) because she knew how much I loved video games. From getting a NES in the late 80s to a PS2 after graduating from high school in 2000, she was always the one who made it all possible. Thanks for the video, and God bless!

My dad pretty much helped me get my NES, most of the money I made by recycling aluminum cans, took the time to smash and bag them to make sure the bags they were in were nice and heavy. Both my mom and dad got my SNES for me, my Genesis that I bought in 1998, my own work money covered that Model 2. My Model 1 I can thank my ex-girlfriend for, she took me 60 miles out of the way, and I scored it for free due to how much money I spent on collecting game software from that shop. The shop guys were thankful that I spent over $100 at their store. We were going to the zoo not far from there, but we got there a little too late as they closed for the day, and the Play N Trade was 10 minutes away from there.

I really appreciate this video. You probably have a bunch of kids watching your videos, and giving kudos to your mom teaching you the good values just goes a mile to show the new generation what should they look forward to become.

Have been enjoying your channel for about three years now, and I can say that this video is easily my favorite of all of them. Love the human stories, life lessons, and heartfelt appreciation for what you’ve been given.

I've seen most if not all of your videos. This by Far is the best you've ever made! ...and I love how your sincere gratitude towards your mother lays the groundwork for the entire video. Awesome stuff!!

Thank you my friend, really got tears in my eyes, remembering how hard my parents worked for my brother, my sister and me. Today I'm a grown man with much more we had when we were kids thanks to my parents. Thank you again for sharing

I’m at work now, doing 16 hours so that people who have family and friends can be with them. Tomorrow I’ll be doing the same thing, so that’s 32 hours of time and half
