I loved my 3DO - bought it in the fall of 1994 when the price dropped to $399. There was a very brief window where there was some developing momentum but Sony really took the wind out of their sails (and sales) with their marketing muscle and lower priced console. Road Rash sold me on it.

Man, the 3DO never EVER gets the appreciation it deserves. For a console released in 1993, nothing else even came close to the raw power of the 3DO. Unfortunately, being an early CD based console, it was plagued with plenty of FMV trash games, but just underneath all that crust were games that truly deserve more love and attention nowadays. I often see people lump it together with the CDI, and that has to be the biggest disservice to a console I have ever seen.

Aside from price, the other aspect which kept systems like the 3DO out of my house was a lack of local retailers that sold it. Even if I wanted to purchase a 3DO when it was on store shelves, there was not a store in my town that sold the 3DO or it's games. It was this way with every obscure video game console in my hometown. TG-16, Atari Jaguar, 3DO, CD-I, it was around a 4 hour drive to get to the closest retailer that sold any of them.

So nice to see some love for this forgotten but underrated console. Not all with the 3DO was perfect, but what we got here was honestly still pretty good. I'm still trying to add Killing Time to my collection, but I have gotten some fun out of Escape from Monster Manor which came first. It's not nearly as story driven and a bit more repetitive, but I really like the spooky/Halloween cheesy vibe I get from it. I also firmly stand by my opinion that Need for Speed on the 3DO was much better than the versions that came to the PS1 and Saturn. It was more realistic and the other versions were missing the one thing that made Need for Speed cool and that was Mr.X. The PS1 and Saturn versions became too arcade-like in gameplay and were quickly overshadowed by the far superior Ridge Racer titles + Gran Turismo on PS1 and Daytona USA + Sega Rally on the Saturn.

NFS was literally jaw dropping. 3DO was also the only way to even play SSF2T at home in the US until it was released again in 1997 on the Street Fighter Collection disc. I never owned one, but I remember trading one of my friends some Super Nintendo games so that I could borrow his 3DO to play games like Road Rash and Super Street Fighter 2 for the weekend. These games were miles ahead of anything that was out on any mainstream console at the time. Considering that the 3DO was creating games like these when the 16-bit SNES was at the height of its popularity is impressive. Some 3do games were jaw dropping at the time. It was unbelievable to have this graphics and sound at home. I will never forget how awesome it was to experience street fighter, way of the warrior, samurai showdown, roadrush at home in my friends house. CD quality sound, so colorful, big freaking full motion videos, 3d graphics in some game. WOW. Going back home to my Mega Drive and looking at the graphics it offered. It was... disappointing a bit. Like seeing Neo Geo AES at the gaming store. Jaw dropping. I agree about Road Rush as best game on the platform.

I'm also a long-time 3DO fan and owner, but my top ten would look extremely different. I enjoy a few of the FMV games quite a bit, and not just the funny light gun games (glad my American Laser Games gun still works). I would probably have a list something like: Super Street Fighter II Turbo The Incredible Machine Battle Pinball Psychic Detective Night Trap Mazer Immercenary Killing Time Strahl Burning Soldier I'm likely forgetting something, though. AD&D Slayer and Deathkeep were pretty fun in their day, and I was really into Star Fighter for awhile, mainly fascinated at just how high toward space it would let you go.

Knowing how low the bar was between 1990-1994 for 3D graphics at home, the visuals in this video are mind blowing. It is definitely easy to dismiss the 3DO in hindsight when the ps1 came out in 95 and PC dominated 3D graphics with the voodoo in 96, but in 1993? The 3DO was more impressive than even top of the line PC 5 times as expensive!

The when, the where and the how you played games definetly changed your experience of the them. I dreamed of getting the 3do but my Mum never bought me one after splashing out on the short lived Mega Cd. I will never forget though the time my mum bought me an imported sega mega drive and popped it in my bedroom 3:00 a.m christmas morning. Played E-swat for the rest of the morning then got given revenge of shinobi as another present. One of my best gaming memories.

My best friend had one and was so proud of it. I didn't like the fmv games but the system was impressive for the time.

I was about 14 when it came out and for me a full time job was mowing lawns in the summer. The 3DO and CD-i are about 70 lawns worth of labor and thats at least 3 maybe 3 and a half summers. By the time I could afford it I would not have been interested anymore. The problem with the handful of expensive game consoles the industry released it they did not appeal to the bulk of consumers. They were as expensive as a desktop computer but much less capable and had a smaller software library. Whereas the cheaper consoles were considered toys so most of them were purchased by parents for their kids, or by kids with less than one years lawn-mowing money. Larger consumer base means overall higher profits. As gaming evolved so quickly in the 90's a lot of companies just did not understand how to analyze the market.

Most of the games on this list I never got a chance to play, but the ones I did play very much deserve to be on this list. I never had enough games on the system to make a top ten list, but I loved the hell out of my 3DO until Final Fantasy 7 gave me a reason to move on. My favorites in no particular order are: Doom -- I know it isn't the best version, but it was the version I grew up with, and I never knew what I was missing. I spent many a night blowing up demons with this one. Samurai Showdown -- Epic game. You nailed it here in the video Gex -- Definitely a good game. Not amazing, but fun enough that I beat the thing a few times. I never thought it was all that hard since it kept burying me in extra lives. Return Fire -- Nailed it again in the video. Absolutely fantastic game, and I loved the expansion pack, too. Star Control II -- I loved the first game on Genesis, and the sequel was even better. The voice acting is great, and the humor is spot on, as is the gameplay. Also, I believe this remains the only console port of the game, making it one of the few games worth picking up for 3DO to this day. Space Hulk -- Good god, this game is tough as nails, but something about it kept me coming back. I never beat it, and I doubt I ever will, but I was addicted to it once upon a time. Captain Quasar -- Probably my favorite game on the system. Awesome run n' gun adventure with a lot of exuberant humor and destructible environments. That opening movie alone is worth checking out. Its only other release was on PC back in the '90s, so it's also one of the few games that is worth tracking down on 3DO today. The Horde -- I only ever played the demo of this game, but I played the hell out of it. I always wanted to get it, but my older brother thought it was dumb, so i kept my love for it secret.

Retro gaming hippie approves! I finally dusted off the 3do tonight and have 2 of the games on this list. Gex is a pretty amazing game in many ways. Hopefully it did well other systems. I recall loving star flight I believe that was the name.

My cousin and I would play samurai showdown on the weekends on my dad's 3DO. My aunt bought the SNES version some time later. The difference was night and day. Crazy.

Very nice video, finally someone else is a 3DO apologist, I love my system so much I own 2 different models and looking to purchase the Sanyo version. While it was rife with fmv games (my personal favorites), the only thing I won't be able to afford is lucieene's quest, since a CIB copy is over 1000 lol.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I actually exchanged my Sega Genesis, CD, 32x Plus 2 turbo controllers to extensions Mortal Kombat, sonic CD and a bunch of other games just to get the 3DO and one controller in exchange. I was 17 and just move in an apartment by myself and I would actually skip meals just to buy a game at the end of the week. I remembered playing 19 hours straight of Killing Time on my day off. Captain quazar, Road rash & Hell: a cyber punk thriller we're also filling up my weekends. It crush me when I heard the 3do 2 wasn't going to be made.

I would have put Star Control 2 in the top 10 instead of Killing Time or John Madden, but otherwise yeah. Solid list. I also liked Lucienne's Quest, but I don't think that was all that popular.
@SkyScourgeGod3 жыл бұрын
Star Control 2 is pretty cool, definitely top tier 3DO material. Lucienne's Quest was also good, but the problem was that it's the only English translated version out there and it's only on 3DO, a console that was already a rare commodity to find in consumers houses due to its price. This makes Lucienne's Quest ludicrously rare and expensive these days. It was also on Saturn re-titled Sword and Sorcery, but alas it remains exclusive to Japan with no official translation. :(

Started to collect for this console in 2015 and still love it. I do prefer Rebel Assault, Road Rash and other games on my 3DO. Thank you Lord X for 3DOwning! The '90s rule.

one thing easy to neglect today is that time game of a couple of years of a game being released on a console then another. Road Rash was a delicious masterpiece on the 3DO hands down, though it simply did not feel the same on ps1 because of that time difference. Had an absolute blast playing Street Fighter there too, even with the sketchy 3 buttons controller (I think you could map them). It was a clean arcade port and I was deep into the franchise back in the day I did not own a 3DO but my neighbor had one. We had a lot of fun playing Xtreme games which would easy be part of my top10 for the platform. We played together there at least once a week until we got a bit older and had some issues fighting for girls

I'm a simple man. You could give me an ice cold soda, a slab of velveeta snack cheese on a plate, with a pile of wheat thins crackers, and fire up some Wolfenstein, and I'd be totally happy and entertained for a whole day.

What always struck me as weird is how so many early CD-based systems seem to have focused more on flashiness or over-extending their performance capabilities, instead of capitalizing on the increased storage to provide more game variety, smoother animations, and so on...

I know I was overly critical of the 3DO SLX, but growing up I did not see the value of it at that time. Several yrs ago I started to look st the 3DO differently, as I've been researching the games and the system more closely. I wish I had invested in one when it came out, but I didn't, to late to change that. However there is an odroid xu4 I'm looking at purchasing that has 18 of the best from the system, one of them being road rash. I plan on investing some serious time in those titles, and Though we see things differently. You made the right choice buying a 3DO, great vid as always

1996 I went to funcoland and traded in a number of games I didn't want anymore to get the 3DO. I got lucky to get Return Fire for free since it was sitting in the console and the people working there didn't know it was in the tray. Also got SSF2T, Total Eclipse and Off World Intereceptor and a few other titles. I wanted to get more games but the Saturn took priority since the games coming out for it really got my attention and the 3DO wasn't getting anything new.

Never had a chance to play hardware 3D0, it seemed like a solid system and based on what I know of the system I agree with your top 10! SSF2 and road rash are a perfect 1 and 2!
