I don't care what the haters and revisionists say: this was an excellent port for the Mega Drive/Genesis for the time and was like being able to play the arcade at home. I think it's hard to imagine for those that weren't there at the time how thankful we were to have this game. Literally the only issue for me is the voices and it definitely didn't bother me at the time.

@@mrlaidback83 It's not in your own opinion, it actually was the superior port when compared to the SNES version. The music can't be touched. The sound effects were nearly spot on, especially the fierce punches. There were a few extra frames here and there. More things were happening on screen here and there, and so on. The characters felt slightly bolder and the movement felt closer to the arcade. It's the best one. The SNES only had a superior Super Street Fighter 2 compared to the Megadrive version. This was mainly because of the music and colours but gameplay wise, the Megadrive version was superior to that. Why? Because everything was the same as the SNES except for one, DeeJay's machinegun move actually worked the same way as the arcade from hit counts and impacts while the SNES version was broken. For that, it crucially put the Megadrive version above the SNES version in gameplay only.

It really is hard to overstate just how big of a deal getting SF2 on the Mega Drive was. For the 10 or 11 months from announcement to release we were clamouring for any pics we could get of the upcoming game. When it came out it became THE game we would play round after round for hours on end. Almost everything you learned at home would translate to the arcade we'd almost never seen anything like that before

I was so excited back in 1993 as a 9 year old when I got this game. I also had the 6 button controller pad (2 of them to be exact) for the game. It was so much more easier for me to pull combos off on the 6 button Sega Genesis controllers as opposed to the Super Nintendo shoulder buttons. I was so glad that us Genesis owners had an SF game to call our own. Were the voices scratchy?? Yes but let’s not depreciate the phenomenal sound track, and game play. Excellent port I must say.

I was fortunate to have World Warrior on the SNES and maybe two Christmases later SCE for the Genesis. One of my brothers (RIP) had Turbo, so I could go to his mom's and play that. Never had to worry about the console wars, man. I'll say this: the SCE Ken theme is the very best of them.
@EAprima
@EAprima Жыл бұрын
My condolences on the loss of your brother. Absolutely, SCE Ken's music (Ryu's too especially) trumps the SNES version. You know what crazier? The third party that did the BETA version of the game on the MD made the music EVEN CLOSER to the arcade than what Capcom did! Madness.
@zanegandini5350
@zanegandini5350 Жыл бұрын
@@EAprima That third-party was Minakuchi Engineering, the same developer Capcom would later license Mega Man the Wily Wars and all of the GB Mega Man games (except GB MMII) to. Honestly, it did some aspects better (especially the color usage) than Capcom's own SCE, but also some worse (try listening to Dhalsim and Blanka's themes... yikes). It's unfortunate Capcom pulled the plug before they could finish it, because it was shaping up really well.

@@HellTantrumbull SNES didn't have CPS1 combos, meaning the cool advanced combos you learned in the arcade weren't possible. Plus it had slow down which meant that even some links that worked in the arcade couldn't work on the SNES. It felt like a different game, like a beta. In this version everything worked like the arcade.
@HellTantrumbull
@HellTantrumbull Жыл бұрын
@@aquilonianace4791 Along with what you said, another thing that got on my nerves with the snes version was how Boxer's dash punches and turn punch was broken because they would start losing distance with each new fight. I had two copies of the snes Turbo back then and on both carts his running distance always got short and shorter to the point he would just punch where he's standing instead of moving toward the opponent. Genesis version this problem never happened with him and I could even do his arcade combos since the cps1 combos do work unlike the snes version.

The arcade and genesis both use a Yamaha fm chip so it makes sense why the are similar. Fans improved the voice samples recently in a mod hack but there’s only so much you can do with the hardware
@hammerheadms
@hammerheadms Жыл бұрын
@@djhenyo Oddly enough, I think the Capcom arcade board actually uses a very similar synth chip to the YM2612. The snare effect I think is actually a sample sound, which would account for the lower quality. Not sure why samples with the Genesis were so bad on so many games. The Sega developed games were usually much better, though sometimes still a bit distorted, but I suspect the lower sample quality comes from lazy dev teams. All we need to do is look at many of the new Indy game or ROM hacks to see how much better a devoted fan can do. One thing I have heard is that much of the sampling in many new Indy games is ran though the normally under utilized Zilog 80000 coprocessor for clean up. I suspect Sega was better at using the totality of their hardware than many third party teams that just want to get paid.
@hammerheadms

@@visionop8 Yep. I played it first on SNES, but I always hated the shoulder buttons. The Genesis 6 button is way more comfortable and responsive. My runner up to the Genesis port is actually PC Engine's port. It's not great with the 2 button controller, and there are some cutbacks because of hardware limitations, but WOW! That game actually play REALLY good. Sounds good too! PC Engine surprise me with that one. I would love to see an Indy developer come up with a ROM hack for that one, just to see what they are able to do with it. Pick up a couple 6 button Hori controllers with a 5-way port and you can have loads of fun with that one.

Reality was it was way worse for fighting games period. Even hardcore Sega fans have admitted the buttons being in a row and so close together was a nightmare. Know there's a reason the Neo Geo game pad had huge buttons spaced enough apart that made it feel like an arcade experience. Neo Geo had its buttons in a row, designed way better. Almost every fighting game was better designed for the button and shoulder button layout on the Snes. Like to say they were both good for their time, I still pick the Snes version.

This is my favorite version of old school sf2. It just has a certain charm and nostalgia to a simpler time. It's limitations give it character and had much smoother controls than the SNES version. Aside from being in an arcade, sound blasting on a high contrast CRT, this is it for me.

Amazing home port of one of the best games ever made. I remember when it came out because the SNES was enjoying SF for a while beforehand and I was always envious of it. I was so happy when CE came out and then later Super SF2.

The Genesis 6 button pad was one of the best ways to play this game at home. The SNES controller wasn't conducive to playing like the arcade, you typically played with your right thumb manning the face buttons (Y/B/X/A) while your index fingers covered the shoulder buttons. In the arcade your right index, middle and ring fingers covered the light/medium/strong attacks for both punches and kicks. Most of my friends would try to do workarounds by remapping certain attacks to the shoulder buttons, but that usually had others switching up the layout when it was their turn to play. It got better if you had their joystick controller (although the buttons were still a bit offset ). The Genesis 6 button gamepad allowed you to use the arcade style of play better : use your right thumb as support for the gamepad, while the index, middle and ring fingers perform the same tasks as in the arcade, your muscle memory from the arcade remained intact on the Genesis. The Sega 6 button joystick was godly.

My favourite home port of Street Fighter II! ♥ I own every version of it (PAL, USA, Japan, PAL Asia) and I love even the scratchy voices: for my way about how I lived this version, this flaw added a bit of "personality" to this version! Nice video as usual, Lord X!

I like both the snes World Warriors and this one, I wish it was released with the better sound and colors, the fanmade patch proves it was possible to get a better port. And now that we are talking about better ports, the MK3 port proves the Megadrive could have had waaaaaay better ports of MK1 and MK2 on par with the SNES versions.

I bought the SNES version of SF II Turbo within a few days or 2 weeks after it released in the Summer of 1993 (July/August). I remember saving my money to buy it, & my grandparents drove me to the mall so I could buy it. The Genesis SFII SCE released a couple months later in September 1993. I remember being turned off by the noticeable visual downgrade of the Genesis version back then (Guile's stage stood out the most to me as the most egregious). Nowadays, I've come to appreciate the things the Genesis version has to offer that the SNES didn't: The Arcade Intro, The Elephants trumpeting WHILE fighting in Dhalsim's stage, Champion Edition being included, the larger gameplay screen, the background music more closely resembling the arcade (only exception is, I prefer/like the SNES version of Sagat's theme more than the Genesis version). I still own physical copies of the SNES, & Genesis games. I prefer the sound of when fierce attacks connect in the SNES version (sounds better/is more satisfying to me, & makes the gaming experience more enjoyable for me). I also own a physical copy of the Genesis remastered edition, which is definitely an improvement. A physical copy of the remastered edition of Genesis Super SF II will be in my possession shortly. I prefer the Genesis version of Super SF II over the SNES version because of the mode you can select to fight every character. Hey Sega Lord X, I suggest doing a video on The Genesis port of Super SF II. I would love to see & hear your thoughts/opinions/insights on that port as well. Love your content, I still play my retro Sega stuff regularly. Salute, SEGA!!!

A major aspect for me was having championship edition as well as turbo. For friends who where not used to the game champ was a great way to play and let them learn. Also we had 10 turbo stars without needing a password unlike the sned with their child friendly 4 stars..... One of many many minor advantages of it.

I have fond memories of this one! had no idea the game actually took up more screen space compared to the SNES version. and yeah that alternate version at 9:42, I remember seeing it in magazines! their version had the weird black bars covering the top of the screen where the names and life meters were, *but* I understand the music and sound they had done was far better than the version that was eventually released! apparently in recent years that version of the ROM finally surfaced online, so you can see what that version would have looked like.

This game cemented my love of Street Fighter (even if I'm not a great player), and eventually lead to me paying over $200 in todays money to import Super Street Fighter II: The new challengers. Playing this on a modded Megadrive was a dream back in the day. It's the beginning of Capcom producing games for Sega and lead to all the goodness that is Capcom on the Saturn, and the reason the Saturn is still my favourite console ever.

Great video. Having picked up both this and Mortal Kombat for the Genesis the day they released, this felt like an awesome port. I dont remember taking issue with the voices, but I was more focused on how close it felt to the arcade at that time. For the Mortal Kombat genesis port however, that game felt noticably flat and watered down. It lost the visual and sound punch of the arcade but retained the gameplay pretty well. Had an awesome time with both despite thier shortcomings. The 6 button controller felt like an awesome upgrade over the 3 button controller at that time too.
