According to the dvd's extras, many of the ideas behind the show came from the writers' personal lives or their friends. Like Festivus, which was a festivity created by one of the writers' father. Funnily enough he never thought it was a good idea for the show until someone else told him so.

It doesn't take a genius to write the stuff, you just rarely see funny stuff on TV because it is so corporate. I have had many friends over the years that were just as funny. Comedians are like guitar players, a dime a dozen.

Both go on the night of the town to celebrate her release and drink till they start puking(but George faked drinking alcohol and dumped his in a plant vase behind his booth) and demands that she drive them home. George knows a corner street where a cop lays a speed trap every Friday and Saturday nights and gets her to drive on that street, and when George sees the cop he grabs the wheel and crashes the car right into the cop car. Three weeks later he goes on his 1st date with her all over again...George is one sick puppy!
