This video is over three years old, so you're probably not monitoring it anymore, but this is a fantastic guide that was extremely helpful in me finally beating this fight, so thanks! One slight thing I'd point out is that you can open with Ichimonji double on Genichiro, and you'll do very significant posture damage and also prevent him from using his mortal draw right off the bat.

First off, just thank you for the video. I'm over 40 and I've never been amazing at games that require such timing and precision, but by just being stubborn, and not giving up despite dying over and over and over, I can usually defeat the final boss, clear the last level, whatever. But this time, dang, I just... I could get past Genichiro, but even Isshin's first phase, I couldn't figure out for the life of me. I was running away and then running in during small safe windows and chipping away at him. Defeated him that way once, I think. But, then phase 2... just forget about it. I was dead before I knew what what was happening. Your guide has given me a handle on how to face Isshin in phase 1 instead of running away all the time, and it feels really good to be up in his face deflecting and Mikiri Countering him. Although I only make it to Phase 2 once every 5 or 6 attempts, I have a much better handle on how to approach Phase 2, as well. In Phase 2, I tried the run away and use the umbrella "easy" tactic suggested elsewhere, but, I'm jacking that up somehow, and I find it's just better to face him normally and learn when to deflect and Mikiri Counter. Not sure which method will work for me in the end, but for now, I just wanted to say thanks (again) for the video and also the kind replies of yours I've found in the comment section. You've given me some hope, and who knows, a hundred or two more deaths and I may even be able to beat phase 3!

Thanks mate and no problem at all. Definitely keep practicing to beat him without running and chipping away. This being the final fight you'll feel much more rewarded when you beat him properly, even if it takes those hundred more deaths. I'm over 50 so don't worry about your age either lol, you've got this in the bag with a few more runs! 👍

@@fuzzybearbarian Well, I managed it! It did take quite a few more attempts, and I did a bit more running away and using the umbrella more than I'd wanted to, but I finally pulled it off! That said, after the credits rolled, I decided I wanted to get Purification and Dragon Returns endings, so I reloaded a save from before Divine Dragon and spent a hefty amount of time doing everything for those endings--including Owl Father, and properly beating Demon of Hatred. Now all's that's left to do is to beat Isshin Sword Saint one last time! Not sure I care about duing Shura ending, since I'd have to do NG+ for that, but anyway, thanks a million for all your help!

Dude no joke. your guides have helped me understand a lot to this game to the point where I've gone from being a straight up dark souls roll i-frames spammer, to a more conscious deflecter. Thanks for the video, it helped me a lot for Isshin's second phase. About the Ashina Cross he does in his first phase, I found a good way to avoid it is just to walk away from it; no back dash, no jump, just walk in the opposite direction until he completes the attack. This puts you at the perfect distance to punish it with Ichimonji and doesn't require any timing because of how the tracking works.

My favorite thing about you is you don't use combat arts in these really tough battles, which is perfect because neither do I. Nothing worse than accidentally activating one at the wrong moment and getting punished. Which happens alot since you're practically pushing L1 and R1 the entire time. But the Umbrella counter vs his Jump attack made the whole Phase 3 a thing of 15 seconds. And wioth resurrection + alot of gourds Phase 4 was doable. Still fucked up every single Lightning....dafuq....

This is the best tutorial i have came across this definitely works i tried and beat ishhin on my 5th try or so but one thing i would like to add is after a patch the jump attack with the spear that ishhin does deflect it dont use the umbrella cuz he will jump back as soon you block it with the umbrella so deflect it doing so will stun him for a few secs and you can get in a few hits.

Hey Fuzzy, a few notes: I think you should *absolutely* use the Ichimonji Double on this fight. It's great after every Mikiri-Counter (at least vs. Genichiro and Phase 1; it can still be useful in P2 - you could have used it at @9:48 to recover 75% of your posture). It's the best way to make back your posture, as well as dish some out to Isshin. Also, when opening the fight against Genichiro, you can just safely run behind him when he charges his blade and attack him a bunch for free. No need to dodge. Sometimes he will follow it up with his second swing. In that case, just step dodge to the right. This is A LOT safer than your recommended method. As for his sheathed stance in P1, you can also deflect his cross swipe with some precise timing: When you see the second glint, indicating his attack being unleashed, double tap block exactly at that moment.

On all four play-throughs to get to Platinum, I never actually learned how to fight Isshin. I learned how to cheese him from other videos, and beat him tons of times, but could never actually go toe to toe and beat him legitimately. I'm just did that for the first time today after watching this video. Thank you so much. I think I'll be a bit better prepared for the Gauntlets and Inner Isshin now that I know how to beat the regular version without resorting to cheese.

I can't fucking believe it. This worked. It's 5 am. I ran into him for 20 times. Desperately trying to get the burn effect off. Got to the last phase like 4 times and never had a chance. After watching this, first try was a win. And I didn't even manage to deflect a single lightning attack, and I dodged half of the stabs instead of mikiri countering. But it still worked. Nice guide. A couple of tips of my own: - Phase 1 Isshin sheath attack "tell" is when he duck his head. Just press deflect when you see his head dips after the sword is sheathed. - You can jump forward to bop on his head when he does the spear ground swipe perilous attack. - The moment to pull out the umbrella and deflect his Wind swipe attack is when he place his hand on the sword. There is a split second between when the wind stops and his swing, and you can see his right hand moving toward the sword. This whole sequence is also a good chance to put some hits on him.

That's the best in depth analysis Isshin guide on whole KZbin. Love the VERY PROFESSIONAL way of dissecting everything and every move, plus the slow downs on his animations for pareless attacks and your awesome advices here. Thank you very much Fuzzy, I don't loose hope to beat him, and will try again! I keep getting hit after using double ichimonji as suggested by fighting cowboy wich is good for posture dmg but slow and I get punished after, I will stop using it after watching your video. Will try the umbrella on the spear jump and projected force , that's an awesome idea here. What I dislike the most in this fight is the way he rush on me and empty my life bar when I try to heal. That's very unfair and I really dislike it. It appears they did it on purpose. If I don't do nothing he stands his line, if I press heal button he rush on me and punish me for healing, 😢 And spear phase he tracks me like a prey I don't even have time to heal, and i panic and get killed like stupid who lost control. 😢

Thanks and yes, the umbrella tactic is both practical and fun. I also dislike using an item like heal to trigger a boss insta-attack. I don't know why they thought that was a good idea. I guess that's why I prefer to no damage everything :) I like ichimonji double but to be honest I don't even use combat arts anymore. The arts I like are weak, the one's that aren't can get you into trouble, but most of all I find they trigger a lot when I don't want them too, and are usually slower to activate than simple sword attacks. Don't think I'll equip a combat art ever again, tbh.

It's funny, I read this comment and can think "wow, the guide really helped" and "wow, the guide really sucks" at the exact same time lol. EDIT: Haha that sounded bad. Don't worry, 30 tries is not much compared to most, I wasn't saying you suck, I was replying as if you'd already tried to beat the boss and then saw my guide and then struggled because of the guide haha.
