This is by far the best strategy for beating this boss. All others talk about doging at the right time etc. This one literally you can block 99% of the time then get the old mortal draw out and bang you're done.

Might need to grind another skill point for the Mid Air Combat to make faster use of Mortal Draw. For now I get cought out in the second phase because I circle to his right before doing the Mortal Draw which mostly misses as he flies away before I can land the attack. I then spend too much time getting his health down. Circling is also hard because you miss the timing you get hit or he changes the attack. Great video!

I also needed mid air combat arts but following this video and studying his attacks made this a straight forward fight (after dying literally 50 times at least before seeing this). I got caught a few times by the elbow+firecrackers being too close to a pillar but aside from that I was able to dodge everything else he had (seeing how to counter his owl flame thing was critical though). This was an excellent and very well put together video.

As of January 2022, this still works. Died maybe 50 times. Put down the game for 3 days, and watched this guide. BEAT IT ON THE FIRST TRY. Remember, you can use Mortal Draw without Spirit Emblems! Legit guide, thank you!

Me too! However, I didn’t use this guide. Rather, I watched ongbal and learned all the move sets. After that, I grinded great shinobi owl to get his melee move sets down. Finally, I abused sukakus umbrella in second phase when he teleported.

This guide really showed me how to “get gud”. This fight reaaaallly challenges ones confidence. You gotta go heads up with this boss and do two hits, then two blocks, then two hits. Rinse and repeat. Like that guide says mortal draw after his swipe. As of May 12, 12:36AM I have successfully defeated owl. Thank you for this guide and such an excellent explanation of the move sets. This guide and a mix of FightinCowboy’s got me through this fight!

After sinking 3 hours dying following other guides, I've stumbled upon this video. Just first try after watching the video and I finally killed that SOB while only using 1 Gourd!!! This is EASILY the BEST guide in defeating Owl Father. Other guides tell you to hit and run but here, you need to stand your ground calmly and confront Owl in his antics. I think the game is designed to fight him like this so kudos to you for making this tutorial!

Dude with this guide It took me exactly two fights to beat him, It took me even more to beat many of the minibosses earlier. Every other how-to for this boss focuses on dodging left and forward, to 11:00. Playing with a keyboard and mouse, I've found dodging diagonally to be nigh impossible to do sustainably. This guide didn't involve that, and I was able to beat him within a few hours of watching. It completely changed my approach. Thanks!

Wow! I have been battling him for almost 3 days now. I have tried various tactics, including being just aggressive which got me passed stage one eventually. But it was hit or miss, with more misses than hits. Your tip helped. I just had to work to get the last skill to allow starting the attack in midair. Once I got that and learned how to time, and just sit back and watch for the tells, it took about 3 times after watching you video that I finally beat him!. The 1st time, I lost pretty quickly trying to adjust from being aggressive most of the time, to sitting back and waiting. The second time, I got to stage 2 and died. The third time, won it all. Thanks so much! The BEST tip I could have ever received. Now I can move one with the story!

Your guides have helped me immensely, so much that I just finished this boss fight (NG+4) with no prostethics and no buffs, just a healing gourd. I noticed a few things which I hope may help other players :) 1) If you are having trouble with Owls overhead/Ichimonji, listen to when he just starts shouting, and then dodge 2) In Phase 02, I used to keep an eye out for what he would do behind the firecrackers, and judge wether to run in for an attack, or get ready for a thrust. If you notice black feathers rising, it means that hes merging with the owl, which is when u need to get distance. 3) In Phase 02, Altough a bit difficult, before his Fireowl attack, you can run up and negate that attack. Was successful 2/4 times. Anyways, thank you again Fuzzy, for making Sekiro (the game) and Owl Father not seem as daunting. Looking foward to your Elden Ring guides :)

@@ClimbingCrux Nope, I didn't use empowered mortal draw, just normal Mortal Draw. But whichever mortal draw you use you can keep using without spirit emblems. What happens is it's range and damage just get reduced.

I've watched a LOT of "How to Beat Owl Father" videos, and I was barely able to beat Owl Father on my first play-through by following their techniques. All of those techniques failed miserably on later play-throughs. Your video is the first one to actually really teach me a reliable strategy to really go toe to toe with Owl and define the battle on my own terms, and best of all, I can confirm that it just worked even on New Game + 3 (where I am right now.) It still took a little practice, but after failing over and over again, I beat him on my second attempt after watching this video. Limiting his attacks by playing defensive and punishing him when he overreaches is a great strategy, and I really want to thank you for sharing it. Now I'm on to finally grab the last ending I need (Purification) and Platinum along with it! :)

When I make a boss guide I try to find the way to beat the boss that I think most people will be able to do, and usually that involves fully learning mechanics and, in most cases, working out how to no damage the boss without any kind of cheese. I'm not a fan of "boss guides" where someone eeks out a win and then posts that as a guide.

I personally don't have any issue with people using cheeses to beat any boss in a game so they can get through. But there's nothing better than doing it without cheese for that moment of elation when you know you did it. Cheesing gets you through, but never gives you the same rewarding feeling. 4 years later this is still the one. I've cheesed my way through some of this game but there is no cheese here. Learning the attack pattern of this boss when unprovoked turned this boss from the hardest by far in the game for me to actually pretty moderate at worst. Thank you so much for this guide. I don't know if you are still reading comments on this relatively old video, but I wanted to say this guide is, by far, the best for those struggling with Owl (Father). I suck at deflecting, so was nowhere near as aggressive as you. I blocked, dodged, poked him occasionally and the rest was your mortal draw advice. Got him on the third attempt after watching this video. The two deaths were just silly mistakes and nothing to do with flaws in your guide. Also, you earned yourself a subscriber.

I just tried this strategy on Owl Father and got him on the first try with it. He did kill me once in each phase so thank god for resurrections!! I don't know why but this was the guide that finally did it for me. I think the key really was using the mortal draw specifically to counter the two openings that you mentioned, and also 4 or 5 hours learning his attack patterns. Beat him on my first attempt after adjusting my strat from Ichimonji to mortal draw, and I actually MISSED the deathblow on phase 2, go flustered and ended up using 4 more gourds before getting him back to dead edit: Also mad props for solving his second phase for me. Once you know his invisible hit is super easy to dodge, and also that the fire bird is super easy to just hop over and you get a free mikiri punish the second phase is easier than the first

Dude you are an absolute legend. I kept dying because of the firecrackers. I just couldn't figure out when he would throw it during the combo. Can't believe I didn't notice it but after you said it's during the elbow it became so easy. And also using the mortal blade from jumping the swipe attack was huge as well. After watching your video I beat him on my first try, it was so easy! I took being calm to the next level. Literally laying down on my bed to the point where it felt like the tv was too far away to focus but I still got it done 🤣 Thanks a lot man. You've earned a sub from me that's for damn sure!

This is probably my favorite fight in the game. I just fought him for the first time on ng+. He hits like a truck but his patterns are easy to remember and don’t change in phase two. After watching this guide I took him out relatively easy. It’s always smart to start off only parrying and learning the move set then adding your counter shots. Anyway good video man, very helpful!

Dude i had to do this fight without a resurrection node because i rage quit. so after watching this video i jumped into the fight without knowing i had to do it without the node and i did it first try. This guide was a good breakdown. I thought you couldn't do mortal draw after you were out of spirit emblems but it seems you can. Thanks and good luck! Also, don't worry about Attack Power. Damage in sekiro is % based, so increasing attack power doesn't make that much of a difference. Every little bit helps, of course, but what really matters more are your skills, especially the passives for posture damage and recovery.
