I’m a teacher and starting my 11th year, I found out I’ll be having a student that is selectively mute. Trying to learn as much as I can to accommodate the kid as much as possible, thanks for the video!

Gia Staley what do you recommend with your experience for a teacher to do with a child with selective mutism? I have a student and I want to know to make sure my student feels comfortable and able

Justin Pedi here is a tip: never try to get them to talk. I know this sounds like you wouldn't do that, but it happened to my friend soooo much at my old school.

I wish you were my teacher 😔 all my teachers did was say “speak louder” “we can’t hear you” like if we had a choice

I know someone with selective mutism. They were the sweetest thing in existence, even if they only talk yes or no or nod their head! I’m glad they are doing well!

I was selectively mute until kindergarten, and then I would start whispering to people. I’ve gotten so much better over the years although I am still quiet. The only problem is that sometimes I just want to go back to being mute again.

I am 13 years old. Recently I got panic attacks when speaking to people face to face. This then developed into speaking on the phone and now has developed to talking in general. Any tips?? Don’t even know if I actually have selective mutism but would really like to know or get some answers

I can try to help. When you got your panic attacks, were they with people who never heard you talk, or have you spoken to them before? Are there certain places where you never talk to people? Do these people generally think of you as a person who doesn’t talk? For how long has your problem been happening? In my case I had never experienced panic attacks, but there are people with selective mutism who do from what I’ve heard.

imma make this short....I had selective mutism and I never knew and I never got treated. Teachers knew I had it but they chose not to help me and my parents didnt care for it much. People would always wonder why I dont talk and I didnt know what to say untill like 5 fucking years later in gr 7 I got a physchologist and I was diagnosed with a learning disability )which was connected to my selective mutism) even though I already spiraled into depression, overthinking, and suicidal thoughts. My anxiety also worsened. I had a lot of panic attacks and I would cry in class a lot and people just thought I was a cry baby. Im in gr 8 now and nothing has happened at all. I am so pissed off because I have been in my school longer than my friends who just came a year ago and right away got a physchologist, got treated, and got into special ed class while i been in the school way longer and was suffering way more. MY ADVICE, get ur parents to help you, teachers, family members, friends or anyone!! cuz if u dont you will end up like me and trust me im suffering a lot and im on the edge of suicide!! If someone or u are just gonna leave it untreated trust me it will make it worse get someone. not sure if u have it or not but ask your parents to get you a physchologist just in case!!

Selective mutism isn't suddenly you're born with it doesn't occur out of nowhere at 13 I have had it all my life and got diagnosed at 4 pretty hardly at first cause I was misdiagnosed for autism

When i was in 6th grade i had selective mutism and it was my turn to do my presentation and she knew i was somewhat shy because i never talked but she kept pressuring me for an hour to talk in front of the class to the point where i was crying and my friend even tried to tell her, the bell rang for school to end so she eventually had to let me go, and she threatened to call my mom because of “my behavior” and as i was leaving she was gossiping with the other teacher about how it was annoying that “i never talked” and the other teacher was just like her, just agreeing

I never heard of this. I might have had this in my youth. I’m curious about the criteria for the diagnosis. I couldn’t order my own food in a restaurant or talk in class till I was in my twenties.

"Tends to affect" and "only affects" mean different things. She's not saying older people can't be affected by it, just that it's most common in young children.

Wtf does this have to do with American privilege? I’m Syrian and my wife is Lebanese and our daughter has severe selective mutism. To the point where nobody believes us when we say she’s actually normal at home! People have always said “your daughter has autism”. It’s so hard and painful for us and we’re really trying everything to help her out !
