This made my heart hurt. I have loved your videos for so long and your content has gotten me through some pretty dark days. And today I wasn't feeling great and came to get some love, some solace, or a sense of peace. But as a black woman, I felt re-traumatized. And to look in the comments and see that you have ignored what others are saying makes my heart hurt even more. I'm making the choice to step back from this channel, because it is clear that my experiences aren't seen here, validated, or acknowledged. While it hurts, because I've loved your content and following your journey so so much I can't subject myself to places that cause me harm. Thanks to everyone in the comments for standing up in the name of anti-racism. You are seen and appreciated.

Hi, Rowena. I've been a quiet fan for a while now and could even say that you've become my favorite KZbinr. I start most mornings watching your videos to hype myself up as I struggle with depression and anxiety daily, so I'm thankful for your content. But like a few other people here, I'm also a bit disappointed and I echo the sentiment that being open-minded/tolerant/compassionate to the other side isn't applicable to all conversations. I, too, have always tried my best to not be too abrasive nor combative when standing by my beliefs-and I say this as an LGBTQ POC. Sometimes, I understand that people don't understand my views because there's a lifetime of experience that shaped their thinking. I understand that some people weren't taught to think for themselves so it's difficult to try to get them to challenge their own belief systems. Because of this, I try not to judge a person's goodness based solely on their political views. However, I expect more from well-educated people and so I think skirting around the Black Lives Matter issue isn't quite... compassionate. I understand that the situation we're all in is difficult for everyone so it is tiring to "get political." But the violence and systemic racism black people have suffered from for a long time are very much real (very much documented and studied) and cannot be ignored anymore. The anger and outrage people are feeling are justified. As a society, we need to start doing better now. We need to choose a side-and the right side to choose here is the side of the people serving years in prison for crimes they did not commit, the people dying from unjustified police brutality, the people living at an economic disadvantage as a byproduct of years of oppression and in constant fear for their lives due solely to the color of their skin. Not doing so perpetuates the notion that there is nothing fundamentally wrong with the system we live in and therefore, nothing needs to change. I believe you made this video to somehow show solidarity but not addressing the hard truths and remaining neutral really made it counterproductive.

Thank you for saying this so well. I feel the same way. I remember in a video some time ago rowena said something along the lines of “we are all the same, life is unjust to everyone so we just have to deal with it”. Since then i knew she would have this kind of belief but i was still subscribed and want to see her videos still. But this video just hurts me so much, but i was kind of already expecting it. Some people who preach self care always tend to forget that we should care for others aswelo

hey, ro! just some thoughts from a long-time fan: i find myself challenged by the suggestion to be more open-minded & kind regarding different belief-systems. i think that’s ok when debating something as trivial as living in the city vs. the country or something as serious as religious beliefs. however, i am not going to be accommodating to belief-systems that are rooted in oppression. as a woman, i shouldn’t be expected to entertain misogynistic view-points (even if presented in a way that isn’t directly oppressive) simply to keep a conversation civil or open-minded. & speaking on current events, as people who are not Black, we should not expect our Black brothers & sisters & non-binary folk to act with compassion in the face of mass murder. there’s a time & a place for open conversation & civility with opposing sides, but now isn’t the time - not during the fight for life during so much death. additionally, speaking on the joe rogan podcast, while differing in political beliefs, it is still a conversation between two rich, white men. it is a pair of privileged individuals speaking to one another - of course there’s going to be a level of respect. of course there is going to be civility. it’s not a diversified conversation. & both are highly controversial in regards to basic ethics. i wouldn’t use them as an example of moral high-ground. i apologize for this being so long, but i’ve always enjoyed your videos & wanted to offer some (hopefully) helpful feedback.

I 100% agree with your comment. It’s important that we don’t try to spiritually bypass, tone police, or center ourselves during these conversations since we are not the direct victims of the oppression that is going on and has gone on too long. Outrage, anger, and despair are all very healthy responses to the social injustice happening in our world right now. Being too moderate and understanding in these scenarios actually enables racism to continue. It’s important to take a firm and direct stand against racism and put your feet in the fire.

You've said everything I wanted to say. This is 100%. Racism vs. anti-racism is not something about which to be open-minded. There's only ONE correct side here, and that's to be anti-racist AF. Thanks for posting this!

Mackenzee Lance thank you so much for expressing your feelings so eloquently. I have exactly the same thoughts. Just because you’re ANTI racist, doesn’t mean you’re a selfish person who doesn’t wanna listen to the opposing side... you just shouldn’t tolerate racism. Period. Felt the video was a bit tone deaf considering the situation right now and I was extremely disappointed even though, bit expected 😔

Just a bit of my opinion which may or may not sound like im against you but sometimes we tend to use “self care” as a way for us to condemn and invalidate the anger and disappointment people feel after years of oppression that we cannot relate to because we are not a part of that group. It’s extremely hard to empathize with people who are now supposedly “lashing out” or being “violent” when we haven’t been 2 seconds in their shoes. I agree about listening to other people with compassion and not just to be right, but we shouldn’t be so quick to judge how people are dealing with their problems. Don’t be so quick to make things about us especially if we aren’t even directly affected with the issue at hand. As part of caring for yourself, care for others as well, even if we don’t really get their struggle
@Ana-gq7ce
@Ana-gq7ce 4 жыл бұрын
It's not always the case. Maybe someone uses self care because what's going on can be triggering for that person (leading to symptoms of ptsd, depression, pannick attacks, self harm, substance abuse and even suicide). That doesn't mean that the person invalidates what others are going trough. I personally can't agree with people being violent. Yes, I've been a victim (like most people) and yes I've reacted the same way before which never ever helped, so I do understand ir but I can't share it and I'd rather just avoid all things related to people lashing out/acting violent due to injustice not because I don't care, I just can't deal with it and I become so suicidal I can't even help myself and help other people

I understand the confusion. I think that's why she says know where our hearts lie. Because some people do it to refresh their mind to think better and nourish their body to be able to contribute to society well. But also some people do it to avoid facing a problem. Hence, it is important to be honest to yourself why you are doing a certain action :)

I love you so much for admitting you struggle to keep your hygiene up, no one fucking talks about this but it's such a common and debilitating symptom of many mental health problems esp depression, but no one wants to admit that they regularly go over a week without showering or brushing their teeth because everyone will judge them. Thank you so much for admitting that, it was really validating for me coz I've been struggling for years to get my hygiene on track and it's literally only been over the last couple of weeks that I've been actually making progress. Thank you thank you thank you for mentioning this, no one ever does and I always feel so alone and ashamed

Taking naps is my expertise, I can sleep on a couch, armchair, car, in movement, with noise and everything, the benefits are that I feel so refreshed, after 15 or even just 10 minutes.My tips for you: •Don’t sleep on your bed, or you could could get too comfy and overslept more than you should. •If you sleep more than one hour you could feel lazy or even tired. •You can practice sleeping on your couch, or maybe in a position where you can not sleep more than 30 min.

Her video is very clearly not taking a stand against racism. If anything, it alludes to the fact that racists should be welcome in the conversation which is a hard NO. I hope Rowena realizes the damage she’s done with this video and by remaining silent AF on Instagram. Hopefully if she actually does believe Black Lives Matter, she can come out and say it, using her platform to help the movement instead of vilifying those who are adamantly anti-racist. There’s no more room at the table for people who continue to stay silent over this.

Hi Rowena. I normally enjoy watching your content and Beauty Within's content, truly. But as an Asian & Latinx woman, I have privilege and feel the need to speak up. As much as I believe that you had good intentions in the kind of messaging you put out in this video, I don't believe you directly addressed what's going on in the world but rather tiptoed around the issue. I didn't even hear you say "Black Lives Matter" once. The issue is that black lives are being unfairly murdered by police on the street and that inequalities in our criminal justice system have historically and currently put black and brown men at an unfair disadvantage due to racism. I get it, self-care should continue to be a priority for everyone to maintain a healthy and functioning society. But when it comes to matters as seriously as this one, where black human beings are LITERALLY being MURDERED because of their race, for those of us who are non-black, now is not the time to relax. Sure, it's overwhelming, but we're not the ones being murdered for no reason. Our primary focus should be to use our privilege and STEP UP. We need to get out there and protest, donate, make calls, post on social media, educate ourselves. It's important to understand all sides, be empathetic towards others who have different opinions, and yada yada. But this is not up for debate. No one should have to discuss whether or not it's okay for black people get to get murdered for simply living their lives. If we're tired of doing this, imagine how tired black people must be from their family and friends being killed. If you are a non-black person and you decide to sit back and relax, YOU are part of the problem. YOU are perpetuating racism in this country. This is my first time hearing you speak up about this and I'm disappointed. A sponsored video? No links to resources on how we can get involved? Why didn't you speak up earlier? We Asian-Americans need to do better.

When you talk about life being easy in the end, tbh I got real angry. You are invalidating the feelings of black people who are being affected by this. We are all angry, we are frustrated with the system, and RIGHTFULLY so. To say that we should just live happily ever after because this Thai man with very little means is happy, is just plain ignorant. Sure, it's very admirable of him to be so happy with little money. BUT THIS IS AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT ISSUE. If I was black, I don't get how the eff I'm supposed to be happy when I have to be anxious and stressed about police coming by to kill me while I'm running or simply SLEEPING IN THE BED OF MY OWN HOME (RIP Breonna Taylor!)

Just want to add.. I live in London in a multicultural city. I considered myself as educated and open minded person. Living in the city I assumed I know more or less about all the culture around me. I learnt from observations mostly...however that was wrong. You meed to go deeper and educate yourself about other cultures , races and other countries even if you are surrounded by them constantly. Don't assume you are tolerant and open minded because you live in community of different cultures... I totally agree to debate about all the issue within society...peollpe are bombarded with some many shallow articles and random opinions on social media they just forget to "investigate" the issues and educate themselves...aslo I recommend to travel...but not travel for beach or all inclusive holiday. Travel to learn more about other cultures, countries and just ordinary people. I must admit I finding traveling like that very satisfying... Of course during pandemic this is not easy but this situation will lastly for possibly few more months...soo this comment is not as valid at the moment but next year I hoping we all can organise some exciting travels:)...

I'm disappointed with the "have the convos" section of your video. I watched the episode you linked and there is nothing "conversational" about what they were talking about. They are in their own echo chamber reinforcing what the other person is saying. I listened with an open-mind but I fundamentally have an issue with so much of what was being said but 1) not using someone's preferred pronouns and 2) their arguments regarding oppression and discrimination just to name a few. All marginalization is a symptom of socialization. And the socialization of America is rooted in patriarchy and racism which is why we see racism, discrimination, income inequality, and police brutality play out the way the way it does. These are all learned behaviors. Men and women aren't born more maternal than the other; that's a socialized behavior that is reinforced in society. Same with racism. Their "eye-opening" opinions are controversial for a reason. Essentially what you have promoted is a man who believes in natural hierarchies and that a non-mainstream, "controversial" opinion is akin to enlightenment. No bro, the reason women "prefer" maternal roles is because society has pigeon-holed them into those roles. Women have been and still are socialized toward the care-giving role and there is only a marginal group of women who have rose beyond it. No one is asking for a handout. People are demanding equal treatment under the law, equal treatment in employment, equal treatment in everything because that is not what has happened. The so-called equitable institutions have not been equitable because of people have been socialized to act otherwise. That's what institutionalized sexism/racism is. If someone is murdered, you expect their murderers to be prosecuted. But that is not what has happened for black people. And that is why BlackLivesMatter and the protests have come about. Protest occurs when all other forms of social remedy have failed. I think you have a lot more self-educating to do and you can start by not listening to Joe Rogan.

👆👆👆👆👆👆👆👆👆👆👆👆👆 This comment is so spot on about how off this whole video was. I used to think of rowena as my favorite youtuber but I unsubscribed so fast after this video. Not taking a clear stance on social injustice is just taking the side of the oppressor. Also, her promoting joe rogan and jordan peterson during the times of BLM protests...... is just.... It clearly shows where she stands on the subject.

hey ro, hope you're doing well! Just wanted to let you know that your videos have always helped me. They always seem to come at the right time and have funnily become signposts for me I feel? haha somehow they point me towards directions I need to look at at that point of time and for that I am forever grateful! I know these are times of high anxiety with a lot of things happening simultaneously, and so I feel the place your voice is coming from, and even when it is especially hard to look inward I truly believe that the actions we take when we take it from the inside are the most impactful , in every context, and I'm so so glad that this video resonated this. Thats what I got out of it at least! anyway hope we all become better as we go through this together. Thanks once again!

I've learned so much from watching your videos and been inspired to try new things - but trying to sell shampoo and conditioner in the same conversation about racial justice is wack. Maybe you feel uncomfortable having the conversation, try leading from that place and open your circle up to different views from different kinds of people. fight on!

Rowena I have followed you for years. Your advice and wisdom has gotten me through a lot of tough times and have generally made my life better. With all that said, I have to unsubscribe. While I understand where this video is coming from, it is incredibly disappointing and disheartening to see that you are not willing to speak out against systemic racism and police violence. We may not all agree on solutions, I am very willing to discuss and debate ideas surrounding defunding the police, etc., but at the very least I expect people I support to say to acknowledge that black lives matter. It shouldn't be a matter of opinion on whether other HUMANS lives matter. It's frankly gas lighting to say that you need to just "look at both perspectives and open your mind" because I really don't think there is any other perspective that matters aside from the lived experience of black people that are killed on a daily basis. These are just facts that we shouldn't be okay with. I understand this is supposed to be a feel good video in turbulent times, but it completely missed the mark. I swept aside the fact that in previous videos you mentioned QAnon, a right-wing conspiracy group, as an example of questioning societal norms. This I just can't stand by. If I knew I could get in touch with you personally, I would love to have a conversation about all of this but knowing that will not happen I will just have to unsubscribe.

Thank you for articulating how I feel. Rowena I have also followed you for years and greatly benefitted from your videos, but this wishy-washy response to a movement that is literally defending lives and the inherent value of those lives, doesn't cut it for me. In fact, it's really quite jarring. I can't support someone that won't vehemently back (and in your case platform) something as critically important as the Black Lives Matter movement. Black Lives Matter is a simple phrase and a simple concept - at the very least bring yourself to say it once. Being open and accepting to people and their differing beliefs is often beautiful and rewarding, but the right to life and equality is fundamental. Recognise that by suggesting fundamental rights should be up for debate, you are exercising a dangerous amount of privilege.

i agree with a lot of the thoughts you pointed out. even if i feel like a broken record, i still think it's very important to say these things, and it might take time for some to see what you're saying, or maybe some will never see, maybe they're right, maybe they're not! who knows, we only try to know ourselves. 1. to stop and think and then act, and act according to our own core values. maybe they overlap with others' values, maybe they don't. What you said exactly! I think so often there's parroting of "experts" and we don't even stop to think why we're so sure we're sure. 2. sometimes we're not angry and defensive only because of our fear of injustice, sometimes it's because we've attached our ego to an answer and are afraid of our identity being challenged. 2. to simultaneously develop our own intuition and question everything. a strong flexible spine 3. no one is ever as stupid as you think they are, there are ALWAYS reasons why someone does something, whether you agree or not. Try, try try to see why they do the things they do, and this is not the same as justifying their actions or approving them. Just because you cancel someone does not mean they stop existing. 4. For juxtapositional voices to the mainstream BLM movement, there's John McWhorter, Glenn Loury, Thomas Chatterton Williams, Chloe Valdary, Kmele Foster, Coleman Hughes, Thomas Sowell, just to name a few. No one has to agree with everything, but I think only understanding one point of view is indoctrination, not education. 4.5 one thing i learned from Eric Weinstein is that whether it's mainstream news or conspiracy theories, be wary of easy trompe l'oeil answers. feels like a corollary to that is to pay attention to overlooked sources, holding first point in mind. 5. My other favorite IDW peeps these days are Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying 6. real talk i've been alternating between watching these hours long videos and reading articles on racism, and taking a break with KZbin beauty videos lol

Kristy Lin what kind of oppositional views could there be to Black Lives Matter? Sorry but that’s so stupid. The only opposition to that is that you’re racist. Period. End of sentence. There is no opinion to human rights and I have no qualms calling that out for being the dumbest “viewpoint” I’ve ever heard.
