Loved the part about yin-yang and how compassion can be fierce. Compassion is about action (yang), though non-striving is a big part of yin. Jumping in to take action without thinking is like a snap decision, so it's both effortless (wu wei) and effortful.

I'm going through a rough breakup today and self-compassion has helped me be less critical of myself and find myself standing up despite the emotional pain. Thank you, Kristin Neff for your knowledge and book.

When stressed I always go back to Dr. Kristin Neff's three components of self compassion- it's simple yet incredibly powerful.

For self compassion to work Dr Neff talks about 3 components: 1. Mindfulness: ability to be with things as they are 2. Being kind to ourselves 3. Realising you are not alone in your suffering. Suffering is a common human condition.

I cried a couple of times as I was doing the exercises. I liked the Ying and Yang analogy, but I also wanted to point out that Ying (陰) means shadow and Yang (陽) means the sun. It just kinda bothered me how it was flipped around when explained, but I definitely do like the analogy how we need to have both to have self-compassion.

The people who thumbed this video down must be pretty harsh on themselves. I hope they find some self-compassion soon enough.

I think this might be what comes closest to it. kzbin.info They write in the channel description that they base their work also on Dr. Neff‘s work on self-compassion and she also made a video for the channel a few months ago.

I am put off a bit by the fierceness. I can see how some people can say that they are hurting for whatever reason and then justify retaliating against others in an ultra protective way. I love Kristin and she's had a significant impact on me, just not that last part. One thing is to heal yourself for whatever pain you are feeling, and maybe protect yourself and be persistent too, but it's another thing to imply combativeness. She doesn't explicitly say that action is combative, but she talks about fiercely taking action and acting as a momma bear. I'd hate to encounter a momma or papa bear whenever somebody feels pain.

It‘s not about being fierce, when feeling pain, but when someone oversteps your boundaries and having the ability to say no in these cases. And that can come with being combative, but only to protect yourself. It’s not meant to be actively hurting others, but rather in a reactive and calm manner, if someone doesn’t respect certain boundaries with you. It’s the ability to say no. That‘s how I understood it. I must say I have a very difficult time with pprotecting my boundaries, so it really speaks to me.

I watch this video, and as I do, so many thoughts arise in me... mainly: I have severe C-PTSD, I am an INFJ, and I have a very fucked up relationship with my parents... it's part of the reason for the fucked-upness that is my life. I am so ashamed at the current state of my life. I have no clue how to escape the horrors of it. my life is fucked up beyond imagination. what to do? 999-trillion layers of guilt and shame and rage and regret and grief, surface in me and consume me. eating my soul alive...

I was taking in her message until the combat analogy came up. "Combat" is almost always a euphemism for genocide.

Self compassion is not self indulgent
@MindVersusMisery

No, it's the absolute opposite. Self compassion is pretty much the basis for being brave enough to be taking personal responibility for your actions and your life as a whole. People who have low levels of self-compassion - to my experience as a counselor - tend to get defensive when faced with difficulties, and then try to blame and find "wrong" in others to tackle the difficulties.

As a mother, I find this way in to the feeling of self compassion helpful. Maybe it is not as relatable to people who are not mothers, so it would be good to have other similes.
