I think there was an episode of the UK show "Do It" which showed how to make a similar self-opening flower in water, but it was also self-colouring - the flowers I think were made of blotting paper, with a single line drawn down the creases using a coloured water soluble pen - the ink would spread through the absorbant paper as the flower opened on contact with the water.
