Tomatoes and disease has always been a hot topic for gardeners but I challenge why we worry so much about trying to keep them disease free and in this video I show the ugly side of how I grow my tomatoes without much care at all!

This video is a breath of fresh air for me! I just spent the best part of the day worrying about why my tomato plants were wilting and shriveling up, and how on earth I'd protect them from NJ's hot and humid 95+ degree heat. I hung old bedsheets around my trellis to keep the baking heat off them, while my heart was sinking at the sight of my once beautiful tomato vines withering away. Then I came across your video, and a weight lifted off my shoulders. Why are we trying to achieve perfection? Perhaps it's the Instagram effect!

i am 110% with you mate. whatever did we do before we invented veggie dusts and sulphates and blah blah blah.....i just dont know how we as a species survived this long. i asked my grandfather once about testing the ph of my garden and he just laughed and asked what i was talking about. he told me three things. Water, compost, mulch and mother nature will take care of the rest.
@Selfsufficientme

+Joshua J LOL my grandfather said the same THING! Except I asked him specifically about growing potatoes once (like what's the secret and best soil ph etc) and he said "Mark, don't overwater them," and that was it... He grew backyard veggies until he was 91. Anyway, I'm glad you commented and I totally agree we can get too bogged down with getting all fancy on the exact ph or the perfect way to trim a tomato plant instead of just using common sense and the basics. Cheers :)

I have a tomato plant I started in a pot for the summer of 2016. it produced quite well. when fall arrived I took it inside and placed it in a southwest facing window. it produced tomatoes all winter 3-4 a week, stopped flowering in january. spring 2017 came I put the tomato back outside hit it with fertilizer and again it is producing a heavy crop.

Last year I left the tomatoes to do whatever they wanted. I even let the weeds grow up around them. No cages... the weeds were holding them up. It looked a mess. I thought for sure it would be a horrible year for tomatoes. At the end of the season I pulled back the weeds and discovered it was the best tomato season I had ever had. There were so many and they were so beautiful. I agree sometimes we tend to them a little too much. Oh sure, I probably should tend to them a little better this year... but I'm not going to stress too much. Thank you for the videos I think they're awesome

Great message, Mark! No need to sweat it. Blight eventually takes all of our tomatoes, but it occurs late in their lifespan after they produce fruit. We mulch and do some pruning, but our tomatoes do just fine without any pesticides. Nice trellises! I think this is the first time I've seen them up close.

Although not mentioned, Blossom End Rot is a heart breaking problem affecting the actual fruit and relies more on soil preparation (for adequate calcium). Crop rotation is important for soil care and for tomatoes you would also need to include related group crops of eggplant, capsicum and potatoes.
@Selfsufficientme
@Selfsufficientme 8 жыл бұрын
+Chris Brown You're very right Chris blossom end rot is annoying and I even get it sometimes when I think I've given enough calcium and prepared the soil with a helping of lime! That is so true. I grow where I can reach them. Most of my garden is in front of my house. Why? because of my disability. Being in a wheelchair, I do everything that it needs to be done with my plants and learn how I can plant with out asking for help. In constructing big things, i ask my husband to do it for me but my plants is all me. 99% Of the time I get positive reactions and likes it so much that they decide to plan in their balcony. Great job. Loved and Subbed

To get ripe tomatoes here I have to grow them in the hoop house and once blight started to show this year I removed most of the leaves infected and non infected there was already a good set of fruit and this caused it to ripen so I got the best harvest I've had in years. I agree I won't be upset in future when the blight arrives.

Sometimes we just plain worry too much and that takes away from the sheer joy of growing things. I found it impossible to grow tomatoes in Florida without getting blight. Thanks for the tips, I think blight comes with the wind so not much anyone can do about it, as long as tomatoes produced some fruits I don't mind plant dying I even plan to use blighted tomatoes in my compost, heard some people doing it and it is just fine (as opposed to soil born diseases)

I just found your channel. I loved the video. One comment though. I like to place the veggie garden within throwing distance of the chicken pen. If I find something the bugs have eaten too much of, I pull it and give it toss to the chickens, bugs and all. They love it.
@Selfsufficientme
@Selfsufficientme 8 жыл бұрын
+Robin Downing Thank you Robin, yes I usually do the same thing as you with my veggies (except when I get lazy) but my pen is down the back about 50 yards so I normally go around with a large container every few days to clean up the patch then throw it all to the chickens/ducks. I like to grow more than we need so the excess can be used as supplementary feed for the poultry. Cheers :)

+Mumbai Balcony Gardener | Avid Life Observer That's a shame - it sounds like your tomato plants got some sort of virus and in that case you did the right thing by getting rid of them quickly. Maybe try next time in a different potting mix in sterilised pots (left to dry out in the sun after a wash with soap) and see how it goes. Cheers :)

We don't used any chemicals in our garden as will. Here in Seattle, Washington USA there's a season for it to grow and winter to rest. Only thing is slug and snail. Used salt. I find a drop of dawn dish in a spray bottle, spray it will helped repelled certain bug. something simple. No industrial chemicals. Cut everything down composting. It is true that all plants has a life cycles. Perfection won't make it produced any better.

Hi Mark. 6:02 What are you using for fertilizer for these Tomatoes?
@Selfsufficientme
@Selfsufficientme 8 жыл бұрын
+Gold Coast Reefer Hi, for this bed preparation I used some quail and chicken mulch/manure from out of their pens mixed with compost a few handfuls of garden lime and I did also spread a little organic chicken manure based fertiliser called "Rooster Booster" I didn't use much because the bed already had close to enough nutrients for the crop and I didn't want to overdo the nitrogen. Having said that, if a little extra fertiliser is required (which is not always the case) organic blood & bone is probably a better choice than the Rooster Booster for tomatoes since it has more potassium - a few handfuls sprinkled around the base of the plants once at planting and again as the fruit sets does wonders for cropping. Cheers :)
