You don't understand the dynamics of the family, then. Imagine being ignored by your father or husband in lieu of a hobby. I saw this happen to a neighbor whose father loved his two cars more than his family. His classic cars were worth a lot of money, and the family sold them after he died. The son hated the cars because they were loved more than he ever was. I believe this is similar to this family's situation.

Actually there is so much humanity in this series. The love of community, the nostalgia, the reason we love sharing with each other... looking at whats really "valuable" and how we each decide what value is. So I wouldnt say it makes fans look like nutcases at all. It highlights the extremes we can go to, but tempers that with the grounded reality of the effects of our choices and values. Thanks Quince! appreciate the comment. And yeah, Bill Maher's thing was pretty ridiculous, maybe this film will help him see the layers and complexity of collecting and comics.

This kind of seems like an attempt to create a pedigree-style collection (special CGC label etc) to inflate the value of the books. Unlike many pedigrees, however, this collector wasn't buying the books as they were released out...he simply had a lot of $$$ to buy/store them. His family didn't understand his interest/obsession, it, and now he's gone they hope to sell them and make $$$. Apart from the impressive scale, is that really an unusual collector's story worthy of a special label (and premium)? I guess we'll see when this comes out.

I think its important to know that talking about issues and conditioning can all help the process of grieving and healing. Not just in the individual case, but for us all to look at what we value, where we spend time, and how it affects our loved ones. Thats my point of view as a filmmaker, that it helps to look and talk about things openly. And then on a fandom level its just really cool to share this journey of how you work with and sort through so many incredible comics. So... its not disgusting at all. Its quite courageous and you'll see that in the film. So I hope that helps you see the point of the film - to look at our values, to look at whats meaningful to us, and to look at how we might even view our own value. I think you'll see the series goes way past the "hook" and deep into the reason why we love comic books and the real stories of people affected by collecting in both positive and negative ways. I totally agree with you, that the money is just one aspect of value and we'd all be smart to look deeper at what we give meaning too - ie the story, the art, the nostalgia, the friendships, the morals of the heroes etc... I do want to say that we did have the film reviewed by mental health experts and by an ASD organization to get their approvals and to understand better some points of view. Not sure, we are talking around 2007 so another lifetime ago for me kind of. I knew I met him before but could not recall from where until when I was at the last Knights of Columbus deal while I was talking with a vendor he had walked right up and shook the hand of the vendor I was talking to right in the middle of our conversation, he walked right in front of me w/out acknowledging me with his back to me, shook the vendor's hand and he kept walking along like he owned the place.
