Stephanie, I have a suggestion. Buy a big map and put it in the entryway of the chateau. Guests and volunteers who visit the chateau can place a small pin on it wherever they're from, so you can keep track of it!

Now you've more or less done your clear out, you should make an invetory, and keep it up to date when you add to it. You can code purchase or gift. It would help if you ever needed one for insurance purposes too.

@@minastirith997 Yes, but in this vlog Stephanie was very conscious about not wanting to sell items that had been gifted to her, but readily admitted she couldn't remember all that had been. It seems to me that people send her gifts for a variety of reasons, and it's also clear that some wouid be horrified if the items were then discarded or sold.

@@wscwarden5022 true, but lets hope people watching realize anything less than a dozen of the same china wont be used! Better then to send additions to china they akready do use, there'll always be larger dinnerparties than the twelve and they are very old school about setting tables in the sense of matching china, although not regarding crystal or linnen napkins or silverware as far as I can tell. People should learn from what we are seeing and think carefully or they'll need a warehouse at Lalande to keep sky high piles of unused gifts! I've been thinking this all along actually. They must have at least a hundred hedgehogs to sell as well if the aim isn't a palace of kitch 😂

You could possibly have the proceeds from the shop go to charity as you do with the cadeaus. That way you could maybe sell some of the presents you've received and then the gifts would have helped a charity two times. I don't think the gifters would be offended. You can't possibly be expected to keep so many gifts forever.

We can all benefit from a good clearing out. Several of your gifts were given with a note that, in essence, said “if you can’t use it, don’t feel you need to keep”. We should never feel prisoners of gifts, or drown in the weight of others generosity. You show genuine appreciation for each gift as you receive them. That said, life is fluid and once you have enjoyed them, let them have a new life cycle with the next person so you are also free to enjoy the next experience. 🥰

Suggestion: before selling anything in the shop, photograph them - that way, you will have a visual record of your sales, as well as a monetary one. It sometimes happens that one will go searching desperately for a remembered item - forgetting that it has been sold, broken, or given away!

If you haven't already, the data geek in me recommends that you assign the following project to a volunteer: for each cabinet in Narnia, kitchen shelves, future China room, etc., create an inventory spreadsheet with the names of each set of dishes, noting the category (porcelain, glasses, etc.), the maker, color or pattern, along with the number of pieces, where it came from (gift, purchase and from where/whom), a picture of the set, which pieces are missing that you're still hunting brocantes for, and where they are currently stored (in case you rotate things around). You should also include a $ value (of what you paid and/or the value you've researched on shops like Ebay). You may want to include a column to denote/track how many times you've used the set, to determine if you should keep it. Place all of this in a binder. Then the next time you're clearing, just open the book and look through it to determine your next items for the shop! It's a huge job, but would be so worth it.

My Opinion…….Gifts should come with no strings attached, if given within one’s own family, unless they are family keepsakes and then you should tell the recipient to give you first dibs if they no longer want it. We’ve done this in our family for many many years and it works every time. If a gift is given to someone outside your family, it’s fair game. They can do what they want with it.

For porcelain addiction, doctors recommend that you take a lovely, porcelain tea saucer, preferably part of a set, and duct tape it to your upper arm in the manner of a nicotine patch. Failing that there is no cure. All that’s left is to do is to open a shop. Edit to add: A support group? Porcelain Anonymous? “Hi. My name is Philip. I almost bought 2 serving plates today.”

@@ellen9018 I wonder if there’s rehab? Here in the States that could mean going to Target, or Walmart, and buying dinnerware there without crying. If there’s no cure for porcelain addiction, I suppose it could follow the model of the methadone clinic that was by where I used to live (weirdly it was also next to an elementary school but there was never any trouble). Perhaps addicts could go in one by one and fondle a porcelain tea set or dinner service every week. Which begs the question, is hiding porcelain plates behind a statue of the Madonna actually a desperate call for help?

I totally understand how difficult it is to purge the things you love, because I had to do it. It's never easy and the tears flowed. You might want to go a brocante(s) to find a used greeting card/post card rack to display the post cards and note cards in the shoppe. I love the idea of photographing your Father's paintings and Oliver's painting of Mummy and turning them into notecards. And perhaps a series of photographs around LaLande - the garden, front facade, chapel, etc., in postcards and note cards with the year they were taken, updating them each year. People can buy them and follow along with your progress. And what about Andie's books and maybe even Oliver's art and Michael's photography, too. Your possibilities are endless!!! Before I moved this last time, I downsized by about 80%. I was overwhelmed with 3 sets of dishes: a 10 place setting of fine China I rarely used, daily wares which mimmicked a fine designer set, and a heavier porcelain Italian set I bought for outside dining. I decided a household of one does not need 3 sets, so I let all go, but the fine China which I now use daily. Also, many pieces of nice crystal made it into a lovely couple's home who would use them more than me. I can not imagine having this many pieces of china to go through! Letting go is very freeing. Good for you to let those things go to create a space for new. 💖

Now some of them will have a 3rd and a 4th, and a FELLOW viewer (or maybe even another chateau owner who needs furnishing!) will get to enjoy it and cherish it as a souvenir, and just think, it is now imbued with the LaLande spirit! I think Stephanie should put a very kind call out for those who sent a gift of any kind and who would NOT want it sold to a fellow viewer and chateaux lover to write her and let her know!

People under 70 are very modern here, retro 50s and 60s Swedish and Danish are popular, but not old transfere wear or asian that isn't Chinese and at least late 19th century, preferably 18th century handpainted Quianlong, Ming, famille rose, vert, jaune etc etc. In very good condition. The best of course being for display only. Not even Imari sells half as well as in the UK or US. In France it's all the rage atm to set your table with all different china, (big trend) so they're having a very English approach here. Let's hope people realize gifts of a half dozen cups or plates aren't being used nor can be sold, and instead choose something else to contribute to Cadeaux!

@@gnarbeljo8980 I definitely understand. I only wanted to let you know how lucky i think you are to have such a treasure. I did see some coffee sets? made of such fragile porcelain in the thrift store. maybe next time i should buy it, lol. But a new set of cups is the last thing i need right now DX especially since we're looking for our forever home.

Dear Stephanie and Philip, thank you for infecting me with your declutter virus. Its is high time I give a lot of my surplus stuff to Emmaus here in Eindhoven, which is just around the corner. And a little tip for the shop: ask Amaury to make little slats at the back of some shelves. That way you can put big serving bowls straight up against the back of the cupboard to make space for more items. Good luck from LaEindhoven ;-)

It took me about 8 years to finally condence all my china, books, fabrics and furniture down to basic but happy and manageable at my age of 76. Moving from a large old Queenslander house to a one bedroom cottage by the sea was the hardest thing for me, so I can understand that you are so tempted not to sell things you have had for years. I must admit now it was the best thing I ever did. Your attitude Stephanie that someone else will love it as you did when they buy it is the best advice, its it sad at the time but sensible. The food looked delicious as always, you have inspired me to return to preparing my meals a bit more extravagantly as I used to. Thank you so much 💕🇦🇺

Wonderful vlog as usual! So exciting setting up the shop for your guests! Do you think perhaps you might get a chance to give us a decor-specific tour thru the château? When the guys were inspecting the chimney, I gasped at the chairs you had sitting in front! They’re absolutely fantastic and I was hoping you could give more specific details of fabric names and your thought process on how you decorate, Stephanie. I’m in love with your style and I know I’m not alone! The little glimpses we get are not enough for me! 🤗

I have a collection as well (not china), and when I began selling a few pieces, it was very, very hard to do. However, once I saw the joy on other people's faces -- People being as excited about an item as I was when *I* first got it - It became much easier, and actually fun, to sell some. I think you'll feel the same way, since you enjoy bringing happiness to others as well.

Hey Stephanie I have a thing for beautiful plates also. I find my plates at a thrift shop in America called Goodwill. The last plate I bought was for $3.99 so beautiful designed with a lacey edge, in the center of the platter are pink roses with green leaves and stems. Wish I was there to visit your new shop. God Bless and great success. Kathy 🇺🇸

Congratulations to the happy couple!! 😁 On another note, I do think you should be able to pass on some of the gifts, that have been sent. Just the sheer volume of things, should be reason enough. I know, the thoughts behind are lovely, but I do remember, that the letters very often say, that it is all right for you to pass things on (which should be a given anyway). And this way, they will not only help support the Chateau - but they will be sold to someone, as a lovely souvenir and beautiful memory, of a long awaited visit to Lalande, and will be really treasured by someone new, instead of perhaps collecting dust in a box somewhere. I do think this solution is alot better, than things inevitably ending up at Emmaus, simply because at some point, it will be too hard to keep track of, and it will just end up as dust collectors....

Must keep anything saying Fabreje! Oh My, they are special plates although only four, they do use sometimes a mix and match day. They mix up the dishes all at one time, and that is part of the design. It can be a special program. 'Little cakes' on the three-layer plate. Cake platter. 'Petit fours' would be so nice for a special summer party maybe?. Love, love the room Amuary and Nathan was working in on the fireplace area, (log burner area) Absolutely adore the chairs and the whole room. You have done a wonderful job! Do not see that room much. The eighteen blue and white dishes are Dutch looking and beautiful. We have two in our China closet and love them, (The ones Stephanie and her dad got at the factory. ) Such lovely items now will find a new home, and someone will adore them too! So hard to declutter. memories and so much more gets in the way. Philip does not have as much of a hard time though. He is good at this but most men are1 lol
