Thanks for the video, and naming what cheapo headphone drivers you you used, it is a great improvement. Sena if your watching you need to get with Panasonic and buy those drivers as a minimum. I spent a reasonable amount of money for a system that was nearly useless until I did this. I was not expecting Sennheiser audio quality, but I DID expect to hear the damn things at 70MPH in a full face helmet.

I will try this out next week!! As there is nothing worse than buying into the Sena BS and being stuck with the crappiest sound I've ever heard. I Begged Sena to exchange or replace my brand new speakers SMH-10's and their customer service department just basically laughed at me. Telling me that my problem was isolated and it had to be my ears, BS! Thank you soooo kindly for bringing this video out!!

I love tinkering, and appreciate this video very much as I have tried something similar. I have reached a road block, that is why i choose to by higher end ear buds for my helmet. As it is with the comms units they are limited, it is hard for these compnays to make a profit fitting them with decent audio quality, and portability takes a hit if you want to upgrade sound. They are also limited by only using MP3 content, small wires and little to no power supply. Another route to go for better sound would a small size amp/dac that connects to your mobile device by 3.5mm jack and then outputs to a decent set of in ear speakers. The size of the portable amp /dac is about the size of your phone and can be had for around $100 US. giver or take. I know it is not the best solution but its how I get the best bang for the buck on music while on the bike. You do loose the ability for rider to passenger comm's but I see that as an upside, why ruin a perfectly good ride by having to talk to my wife. ;) Be well and be safe on the road.

I just completed this today and have to say... WOW. Easily 3x better sound. Theres bass!! I installed these inside a BELL DLX Qualifier helmet and noticed that when putting the helmet on the new speakers can rub my ears as I try to straighten out my ears due to the new speakers being slightly thicker. This is only a slight difference which is a non-issue. Totally worth doing this especially for the cost.

Nice upgrade! I would recommend using a soldering iron for parts this small and using flux is not needed with appropriate rosin core solder. If wrong type of flux is used (plumbers flux), the wires can corrode later causing problems.

Making sure you original Sena 20s speakers are touching your ears and correctly aligned on your ears, helps a great deal, try that first before anything else. From what I understand, any speaker mod, whether this, or purchasing new speakers like the IASUS XSound 3 is not going to increase volume/loudness from my understanding. What some interpret, after a mod, as louder seems like it is actually improved clarity, improved highs and lows. I this is my interpretation of reading many comments on the IASUS XSound 3 and comments here.

Did this on the Sena 20 with the Panasonic headphone speakers as in the video. Didn't read the 1st line that won't work with 20s until I watched video again when I found the original Sena speakers are a 3 wire, red, white, blue.. No worries, I just had to forge ahead since everything was completely stripped down. I couldn't see where the wire went as Sena puts a sealer over the connection. The red and white were obvious but not the blue. Taking the circuit board out revealed just 2 connection points. So I soldered the white to the right one (neg?) and the red to the left for each speaker. Left the blue off both. Plugged it in and Pink Floyd was playing in the middle of my cortex with left and right channel alternating when needed. Sound is at least as good as originals but not sure about additional bass. Blue wire may be a crossover which would make me think one side gets paired with the red, the other gets paired with the white. Might be worth a try. You are not going to get much bass though as the cones have maybe 1mm of movement. A couple things I did, peel the original Velcro off the Sena speakers and reuse on Panasonic. Also after soldering, put electrical tape over solder joint and wire to give it some strength and protection. Dremmel definitely works good for trimming and rounding the Panasonic speaker discs. All in all a fun project and interesting to see how the Panasonic and Sena's are made. Also before throwing out the Sena's, make sure you pop the magnets out for more fun and games (we use at work to hang prints and wiring diagrams on the wall)

Did the Mod...my thoughts 1: be good a soldering. the wires you are working with are TINY 2: the speakers need some room. With the factory plastic in place they are larger than the Sena 3: improvement in my opinion is only so-so. It is better, but not quite as good as the video describes. ~~~ not sure I would do it, if I had to do it again.

Well I just finished fixing JBL tune 500 speakers in my Schubert C4 pro with the build in Sena SC1A. First I tested the JBL direct on my iphone, Boom boom pow from the Black Eyed Peas as reference. Awesome bass in the JBL drivers. Generally a very good set of speakers for only 25 euro's at the Mediamarkt. Key for good sound is the spacing between the speaker and ear! Lesser space is better bass..... I put some extra velcro layers as padding, the speaker is now lightly touching my ear shell and the sound is totally great. A small tip for sound lovers that do not wanna go for the earplugs, in my Shoei JO I have put a pair of Earebel by JBL (they are a bit thick so you might have to dremel a bit of foam away, I did with the Shoei JO, but they might fit perfectly on your helmet). Great bluetooth sound with a bit of ooomphf, no intercom though. I can even talk on the phone even though the mic is incorporated in one of the speakers.

#1) THANK YOU for the video. I already tried this in the past and it worked for me. I just didn't select the proper speaker replacement. Now I'm going to try your suggestion about the Panasonic. #2 DO NOT listen to heaters. Send them a prayer and call it a day. You don't have to explain what do you ride. People assume that because you ride a Harley or a BMW you are either rich or a snob. I have a Harley set and the bass is amazing and has great sound quality. Not extremely loud, but enough to hear with my loud pipes at 80mph. Now I also ride a V Strom and I need my Sena a lot but I hate it. My Harley headset is obviously useless for the V Strom. I was so desperate that I was considering buying a used Harley headset and butcher it to get just the speakers. Thank you again. Remember ignore the internet trolls, they feel powerful behind their little screens and keyboards. Ride safe brother

If you got your earpieces to work after soldering with that high powered (too much heat) soldering gun, then you lucked out by not either melting the speakers or the tiny wires that make the voice coil .. a 35 watt soldering iron would've been the better choice .. remember to always keep the tip clean .. dab clean solder on wires and connection point and they'll bond faster .. other than that, I just may have to try this with my corded headsets ..

I bought a JVC wired over the ear headphones and ripped out the speakers therein and soldered it on to my Sena and they now sound phenomenal. Cost me $15 for the headphones & gave another $25 to the accessories shop guy to prep them up and solder them on. $40 in total & “voila” you have headphones with skull-crackin bass when juxtaposed to the original Sena crappy speakers. Basically speakers extracted from any reasonably good sounding headphones will sound 500% better than those feeble original Sena speakers. 😇😇😇

Ok, this sounds all good but the question I have is, how loud do you need your music to be? This has been a great debate between my brother-in-law and I. He has always been a hardwired J&M audio customer. Mainly because of their high quality sound. We both purchased the Sena SMH10’s and later the Sena 20s headsets. I hardly consider the sound quality to be crappy...JMO! For me, it is important to hear the ambient sounds going on around me. What I don’t want is blaring music in my ears to the point I can’t hear hazards around me. That being said, I think your video is great if you’re a rider who is more concerned with loud clear music. Many states including mine, California prohibit the use of headsets or earbuds while operating a motor vehicle.

Thanks for the video! I'm genereally happy with the Sena speakers, bearing in mind that that they are optimized for speech. However, when it comes to music, they tend to push the highs way too far for my ears. I really like your approach, however I'm concerned that the replacement could be too thick for some helmets. My helmet, for example, is the Shoei NXR, which is pretty tight by default. Has anybody tried a replacement in combination with the NXR?

Thanks great video. Agreed the Sena speakers are truly abysmal. I have a pair of cardo JBL speakers I wanted to swap in, but they are 64 ohms as opposed to 32 like Sena. I actually was not able to find the specs on the Sena speakers in the manual, but I'll take your word for it. Anyone know whether this would work/be safe? From my brief research, sounds like lower impedance means more power usage, so the risk would be not using more battery but maybe blowing the speakers? I assume if I kept the volume down that would eliminate that risk? If it's such a problem I'll forget it and just buy a pair of headphones with the right impedance, but the JBLs sound great and were made for motorcycle helmet so would be a hell of a lot easier if it would work. Any guidance much appreciated! Thanks!

You're not soldering a radiator. Use rosin flux and/or rosin core solder...not acid. Good info just the same.

This upgrade was easy to perform however the speakers in the Panasonic RPDJS400W are beyond garbage. If you listen to music with even a modicum of bass, they crackle, I need to keep the volume below 50% to manage the crackle. So, more to manage, no viable increase in volume. Consider spending more than $16 on your donor headphones. Other than that, excellent workthrough.

May I ask why didn't you just connect the Panasonic's (after you removed them from the headset) directly to Sena instead of replacing wires? Really thank you very posting this video. I've been looking around to replace the crappy Sena speakers. I'm considering your solution. Favorited and subscribed. Thanks again

So in reality you could use headphone speakers in your helmet provided they can be dismantled and fit in your helmet. I only want headphones for music so all I would need to do is buy a set of over the ear headphones, dismantle them and fit the speakers in to my helmet while keeping the attached cable with the 3.5mm plug to use with my phone.

Did the "upgrade" and they actually sounded worse. Only difference in our installs is I have a Bell Qualifier DLX that is designed for the Sena SMH-10 unit and he used a Shoei. I used the exact same Panasonic RP-DJS400 headphones he recommends, brand new from Amazon, and honestly they are smaller and cheaper quality than the original Sena crap. I did try them out on my stereo before I pulled them apart and yes they sounded awesome in comparison but only because the "over the ear design" of the original headphone speaker is sealed around your ears and therefore produces more bass and a better, louder sound. Only way this "upgrade" could sound even marginally better is that they might sit closer to your ears than the Sena originals did before the upgrade. Without the "over the ear" fitment in your helmet or some sort of amplification to the Sena unit output you're just going to end up with the same shitty sound. Sorry to pee on the parade but this is just wishful thinking. Maybe some better quality "on the ear" headphones would give a better/louder sound but the Panasonics, in my case, were just a waste of $, time and effort. Another quick afterthought I had about this project is, if you're going to go to the trouble of cutting the wiring of the Sena unit use a inline 3.5mm stereo headphone plug & jack setup instead. Much less soldering work and a cleaner, truly "upgradeable" install. Doing this you can swap headphones out in the future by just unplugging the old ones and plugging in the new. I'm going to figure this out and I'll post something here If I find something that works. Hope this helps!

Has anyone done this with noise cancelling headphones to have a quieter ride? Would need to include all the electronics, not just the speakers, but I think it could be done. I saw one attempt, said it worked reasonably well, wondering if anyone else has ever done it.

The sound quality is better with earplugs. It takes away the tinny sound as well as the wind noise. Just try it. I use Rooth 15db reduction and they work excellent. NoNoise make a good pair too and you can find them at Tourtech. If you use foam ones try to find them with the lowest db rating possible. 29+ db is too much and will cut the volume.

Francesco Gerli here's a fun trick. next time youre in a very loud club/concert/bar and the person youre speaking to is not able to hear you, try this: use your finger to seal off their ear with that little point of cartilage that covers the ear hole. then speak into their ear at a normal-ish volume from about a foot away and they should be able to hear you no prob.
