He likely just keep them around for looks in the beginning before he can have more trained guards to replace them with. Also what does Disney have to do with the prequel?

I remember reading somewhere that Palpatine used the incident in which Cad Bane held the Senators hostage as an excuse to start phasing out the Senate Guard to replace them with the Coruscant Guard (shock troopers). He did this because the Senate Guard were selected from systems outside the political influence of the Republic (much like the Varangian Guard in the Byzantine Empire in real life) so that they didn't have political loyalties that could be swayed by politicians or other Republic leaders. Palpatine hated this because he needed a guard that were utterly devoted to him and him alone, so he replaced the Senate Guard briefly with the clone shock troopers and then with the Imperial Guards during the Imperial era.

I noticed how the senate guard number was a reference to George Orwell's 1984, with the imperial senate guards acting almost like the thought police, and Palpatine like Big Brother was watching and listening to everything

I have the idea of the senate guards' armor, weapons, and traditions actually originating from the wars between Coruscant and the Mandalorians, dating as far back as before the taungs' expulsion from Coruscant. Their martial training is specifically designed around circumventing armor, as it would be completely impractical for them to carry the weapons necessary to get through beskar. That said, it's just my idea and I doubt I'd ever get to write for Star Wars.

The Senate Guards also got a humiliating and ironic new job. They were assigned to guard a museum on Coruscant. It's ironic because they were part an old government that was replaced with an Empire.

I do like the scenes in the prequels of them accompanying both Valorum and Palpatine; they definitely evoke imagery of historical accounts of the Roman soldiers who would accompany a Roman Consul in their number and formation, flanking the politician in two lines. Though not explicit in-universe, the implicit out-of-universe context of the political ruler holding fasces (represented by guards carrying bushels of sticks while in the Pomerium of Rome in place of weapons, is sort of brought to mind as well. I know Lucas drew pretty heavily on the decline and fall of Rome for the prequels and little details like this from scripting and art are nice to pick up on for history nerds. And obviously, out of universe their helmets do look a lot like those of the Centurions of the Roman Legions.

I think a big problem is that the commando training program was 4 weeks. WTF kind of special forces training is only 4 weeks? Yes, I am accounting for the fact that normal Senate Guard training has already been completed at this point and this is training on top of that, for those that don't know, that is how 99% of special forces work too where they start special forces training either after basic training or a selection/fitness assessment is incorporated into the SF training to weed people out prior to the actual combat training phase, so my point is sound. Whether it is U.S. Navy Seals, British or Australian SAS, or Canadian JTF2 you are looking at many months, sometimes over a year of training. Even less militant analogues to Senate Guard like U.S. secret service go through 13 weeks of intensive training followed by 18 weeks of special agency training course for a total of nearly 8 months worth of training on top of usually prior military or federal agency experience elsewhere. Closest real-world equivalent to Senate Guard is the U.S. TSA so...... can't imagine why they failed :P.

given that palpatine initially didn't disolve the senate but rather kept it it would make more sense that they were kept under his controll but only later, after return of the jedi, would he have actually incorporated them into a royal guard of sorts, given that the red guards are especially zealous and skilled i'd argue that the senate guard would more likely fulfill part of their original functions but then for imperial notables, specifically guarding embassies and consulates in factions outside the galactic empire,

Those weren’t regular Senate Guards, they were apart of the Senate Honor Guard which is why they have the black cloaks with closed helmets compared to the dark blue cloaks and open helmets of regular senate guards.

I personally don’t like the Clone Wars era senate guard armor. Looks to me like an incorrect clone trooper, but the DC-15A with a wooden stock is nice looking. It’s strange that they don’t use an older blaster and instead go with presumably a custom run of a new one. At that point just get some standard blasters.

For those interested the Republic series comic has a story focusing on the Senate guard (as well as being probably the best presentation of the clone wars) while the Crimson Empire series has the main character be a royal guard. Also there is a short scene in the Empire series which confirms the royal guard to be well above a clone in combat skill.
