Dramatic 19th century Japan setting
Based on the backdrop of the Boshin War period, the new campaign starts in 1864, a time of growing resentment against Western colonial power and influence. As Japan begins to modernise and industrialise, the inevitable social and economic changes lead to increasingly militant nationalism and antipathy towards the Shogunate.
6 new playable clans
Play as a clan supporting the Imperial throne, or the last Shogunate:
Shogunate clans: Aizu, Nagaoka, Jozai
Imperial clans: Choshu, Satsuma, Tosa
New foreign powers
The American, British and French nations play an important part in the story of the Boshin war, and your relations with these foreign powers will be integral to unit recruitment and to advancing your technology trees.
New 19th century Japan campaign map
The new island of Ezo extends the SHOGUN 2 campaign map northwards.
Fully refreshed towns and other campaign map features reflect the new time period, with railways making their first appearance in a Total War title.
Campaign map railways
Develop your own railway network to move armies and agents between your regions.
Railways can be sabotaged and transport can be blocked by enemy armies who take control of parts of the line or stations.
39 new land units
Including modern ranged units - such as the Gatling gun and Armstrong gun - controllable in a new third-person mode.
New units can also be recruited from foreign powers, including the British Royal Marines, US Marine Corps and French Marines.
10 new naval unit types with a total of 21 ships
New steam-powered warships, heavily armed with modern artillery.
This new battle type triggers when attempting a naval assault on an occupied enemy port.
The attacking fleet must sail into the harbour and capture the port, running the gauntlet of coastal gun defences.
New land and sea unit interactions
During a land battle, armies can call in offshore artillery support barrages.
Conversely, costal gun emplacements can target enemy ships during port siege battles, when ending their turn within the range of upgraded coastal defences.
Campaign map bombardments: offshore naval units can bombard armies and cities in adjacent coastal areas on the campaign map itself.
3 new agent types
The Foreign Veteran, the Ishin Shishi and the Shinshengumi.
Each new agent has its own skill tree, and Ninja and Geisha agents have had their skill trees updated with new abilities.

I recall game as the Sendai where I was the only pro shogunate faction, everyone else joined the emperor. This of course mattered little as I had a maxed blacksmith and shrine province mass producing units with huge accuracy bonuses and INSANE charge bonuses. Seriously... for some reason the charge stat gained from the shrine and the encampment would end up doubled for cavalry. Thus, I had yari cav with over 100 charge (I think) and this would instantly route / shatter a full health regiment on impact (1/2 to 2/3 the regiment instantly die from the charge). The stat improvements were not balanced at all!

After a year i can give you some tips. As traditional try to avoid battle autoresolve especially when enemy got bunch of modern units. As traditional army unlike the modern stay behind the mountains and stay out from rifle range. Traditional units in fots are no match in open battle, you have to keep guerilla warfare. Speaking of republic. You got to build a court in every town, and do not upgrade it. Court is growing your influence no matter which it is, any tier higher is gathering influence of direct side of conflict. Be carefull with expansion, vassals and geting heroic victories with your daimyo. When you reach about 15 provinces stay for a while, build up your economy, end your wars when it is possible and research all economic arts gaining more influence of your side and hapiness/repression in provinces. Sorry for my english, i'm not using it much, and my gramatics probably suck nuts.

Build up a big bank before RD or you'll regret it. An exploit you can use on legendary: the game prompts you for going for your allegiance or going independent when you hit realm divide. After you choose either, if you load on legendary then it undoes the decision and you get another turn of not hitting RD. You can keep doing this forever.

I suspect that of all the FOTS clans, Sendai might be the most suitable for going for the Ezo Republic achievement because they have those public order benefits and I imagine that declaring your independence would be like switching religion from a public order standpoint. What clan do you think is the most suitable for going for the Ezo Republic achievement?

Probably Satsuma or Sendai are the best. Earned said achievement a week ago (VH diff level) as Sendai, and thx to lots of bonuses didn't felt transition to the Republican ideology at all. My citizens were like "We are a Repblic now? That's ok, i guess". Seigecraft helps a lot, since you don't have to assault 1st level forts, they will surrender to you a turn later. Clear up Ezo island, claim Sado ASAP (for some reason AI doesn't bombard it, so at some points of game the island gave me like 9000 koku), use two provinces wide front to your advantage, and the rest of game would be rather easy.

Satsuma's better because Kyushu and its surrounding islands are considerably richer and has more varied resources than the lands north of Sendai. There are only 6 very fertile provinces in FOTS and three are on Kyushu; none are in northern Honshu or Hokkaido, and almost all of Hokkaido's provinces have barren soil. Satsuma also has traits that earn it more money than the Sendai, and having a big bank is important for going independent.

Overall, Sendai or Satsuma are probably the best for going republic. But militarily, Choshu might be the best, since the Kihetai will not disband

How about a "Top 5 technology research pathes"? I think that would for one be a lot of content, as well as being pretty useful/important for any player that is not as experienced as you ;)

There's not really a top 5 for that though. 9/10 Times you want to follow the same exact path in every campaign, but sometimes there's certain circumstances that require you to focus on something else first, it's completely dependent on the campaign, and it's impossible to give definitive advice on that, let alone a top 5, which would never be useful.

MrSmartDonkeyLP yeah, you got a point there. But I feel like some information about the ins-and-outs of at least some arts could go a long way. Especially for FotS, where I don't even fully understand the administration-cost-thingy. Maybe not as a top X, but as a general overview or tutorial video?

@@MrKaroell Administration cost is a penalty to tax income. The more provinces you own, the higher the administration cost for each province. In extreme cases, if you have a bunch of provinces already and take a poor province, you actually LOSE money. Techs that decrease administration costs effectively increase the income for all your provinces with no downsides. Therefore such techs are great when you have a lot of provinces, and aren't as useful when you only have a couple. I'd say top five tech research paths are: 1. techs leading up to armor piercing shells, because no matter what clan you play you'll have to do a lot of naval battles and AP shells allow you to win practically any offensive battle. 2. techs leading up to the one that gets you foreign trade, because foreign agents, foreign infantry, and foreign ships are all amazing, and because of the money it generates, 3. the tech tree that allows you to build zaibatsu fields/factories etc. because you want to make as much money as you can before RD, 4. all the military techs leading up to staff college, because modern armies with a couple of armstrong guns and a good number of line infantry destroys any arm the A.I sends at you. The rest of the techs are all optional honestly.

Just put all of your troops on your gunboat and zerg rush Eizo. Then you can turtle up as long as you like and emerge whenever with an uber strong economy and military.

Currently in my Sendai Campaign, after narrowly avoiding a complete defeat early on in the campaign I have consolidated all the region above the capital Miyagi, plus I eliminated the Sado and took their gold. All my allies south keep breaking their alliances with me, but I am fortunately at peace for the moment and am using this time to build up my provinces and economy. I plan to try to take Japan for myself, screw the emperor and the shogun, but I need to be ready when this happens.

What is the best path for income once you take over a location? Is it better to upgrade the size of the town or city or to buy an inn, cottage industry, or market? I don't quite understand how the economics work.

Is the AI backstabbing thing really frequent for you guys? In my play through of FotS, The Edo was the first ally I made playing as the Jozai. They then protected my trading routes by attacking any imperial fleet that raids it. They also just send armies to weaken the enemy before I can just sweep them up. Best ally ever

In my legendary Nagaoka playthrough, the Edo were so treacherous they ended up being the Imperial Vanguard. Edo for heavens sake!

Then Again Son is born/Daugther is born event is pretty useless since they can never be a part of the game. Because Fall of Samurai is only in 6-11 years timespan. As Hostage? Diplomatic relation in FoS is pretty useless after realm divide anyway. Your Daimyo died? Hahahaha Your Wife will be regent the rest of the game. Better to Adopt a General

What is the most optimal army composition?

Early game Line Infantry will be your best core units, and highly recommended over Levy Infantry as both has roughly the same upkeep but Levy cannot receive any upgrades from your researches and much worse than Line. 1 Parrot Gun just to force enemy to stop camping (Do not use Wooden Cannon, they're as bad as Fire Projecting Mangonel in the vanilla Shogun 2). Spear Levies to defend against Cavalry and Melee Infantry as your guns can't break them before they hit your line yet. Once you have enough income, you may switch to Shogunate/Imperial Infantry. But in case you want to go Republic you'll have to stay with Line Infantry because the two earlier units will disband if you go Republic, and rebuilding your core units while everyone in Japan declared war on you is a bad idea. *The exception is Aizu, get Vermilion Bird instead as they're even better than Shogunate/Imperial/Republic Infantry while also having lower upkeep cost! - in the latest patch at least* After the core infantry, get 2 - 4 Armstrong guns, 2 - 4 Yari Ki to chase enemy Cavalry/general/artillery, and you're set. You may add 2 - 4 skirmishing infantry, but unless you're Tosa or Jozai I wouldn't recommend them.

Melee is superior until you get Shogunate or Imperial infantry with kneel fire, then the tables turn drastically. Line or levy infantry will only get off two volleys before a charging katana unit can close and wreck the gun unit. Shogunate/Imperial troops will get at least four volleys off. Five might be possible, but I wouldn't know because everything routes after four. ;) If you're defending a fortress or larger though, one levy infantry shooting above one katana is more bang for your buck than just two katana. Just katana is still quite strong castle defence though. Anyone who says bring lots of modern artillery isn't kidding. It almost makes it too easy.

I saw one site even said that a couple of Shogitai in fort is all that you need to wreck anyone dumb enough to assault it without artillery. And I agree, because I once routed 10 stack of Line/Levy infantry army with 4 Spear Levy and 2 Levy Infantry by holing up in a fort before, Shogitai or Katana Kachi is just overkill.

I have a question...why do you do videos on an old game? Shogun 2 was totally sweet and I myself still play it, but I am curious why you choose to.

Because I want to? If that isn't reason enough, my entire channel is based around strategy games, and Shogun 2 specifically, my audience is tuned to Shogun 2 and thus my videos on Shogun 2 are more popular than anything else I do, including newer Total War games. On top of that, it's also still the best Total War game in my opinion and I enjoy playing it the most.

I think it is certainly the most complete total war game (or maybe Rome 1). I enjoyed Rome 2 as well though, after all the patches. But I was just curious. Not very much content being made for older games, and I always found myself asking this.

People still love Shogun and as i said, no new content is being made that i have found. I am just a curious person, and I noticed there wasnt many comments on this video so I hoped my curiosity could be satisfied. Also while I have your attention, are you going to do fall of the samurai? Sorry if you have, heaven forbid I look into something before asking

Do you mean Rise of the Samurai? As this video is on Fall of the Samurai. Or do you mean Fall of the Samurai Let's Plays? Either way, I've done a couple FOTS campaigns, and I'm doing more currently. Planning on Let's Playing all clans on Legendary difficulty like I did with vanilla Shogun 2. On Rise of the Samurai I have done a few campaigns, but no Legendary, and I likely won't ever do any. Chance of clan overviews or anything like that on ROTS is also much smaller, I don't enjoy the campaign as much unfortunately.
