Sending Ableton Selected Scenes to TouchOSC (Ultimate Guide to TouchOSC)

Building off of what we did in the past Ableton videos (kzbin.info?list..., in this tutorial we'll look at how you can show selected Ableton scenes in TouchOSC.
This is super helpful for live performers, DJs, and others who need to see what they've selected beyond the Ableton transport. You can download the patch via the link below.

TouchOSC is a MIDI control surface for your old iPad, tablet, or phone to work with your DAW and other software. We are using the latest version of TouchOSC, Mk2. Hexler (hexler.net/touchosc) came out with the 2nd version (Mk 2) of TouchOSC in the summer of 2021.

Wow, amazing tutorials on Touch OSC. I made myself a nice template, and I can be redundant by controlling 2 computers. I have another question : now that I can see the selected scene, I would like to keep in memory the previously selected scene, (or the one above). Because when I hit launch, I see the next scene that will play, not the current one. I would actually like to see both. What is playing, and what is next scene.

So this should be possible. To do this, you would probably add the object pulling that information in the Max setup, then output that to TouchOSC similarly to how the other info is being routed out. Then in your Template, it would be another Label receiving an OSC message. I can add this to my list of things to update with Ableton in the future.

Thank you for this! I’m slowly trying to learn more about m4l, touch osc and such, now all i can do is just follow and copy things like this, but would be neat to learn to build things on my own some day! One thing i’m really looking for is to see loop state for specific tracks in session view, so i don’t have to look at my mac when looping. Can’t wait for the next one, and meawhile i’ll be googling things! 😅

Hello, what an amazing m4l device!!! Is there a way to take and send color scene via OSC? This is a tricky one since I'm totaly lost with LOM...

I'm having an issue that I don't know how to fix, maybe you or someone else can. I'm using Touch OSC via MIDI wired. I have to use Wired because of unreliable venue WIFI and minimal setup time. All of my buttons are successfully triggering events in Ableton and OSB. My issue is that the buttons triggering events in Ableton stay illuminated for a while and sometimes when I touch one of the buttons, multiple buttons illuminate at the same time. It's intermittent. Any ideas what it could be?

First make sure you're not reusing any messages (in case button one accidentally is sharing the same message as button 2, so they're triggering each other). If you're experiencing duplicate messages, I share how to fix this in my tips and tricks videos, but make sure your message send is not on any and it's either on the up or down of pushing the button. Last issue I'm thinking of is if there are delays in the buttons registering, that sounds like a tablet issue. What device are you using?

@@TimCorpus I have all of the buttons using different MIDI CC messages. They’re all separate and functioning correctly as far as their MIDI commands are concerned. They’re controlling Ableton perfectly but just exhibiting the weird lighting issue. The iPad I have them on is a 10.9” iPad Air. It’s a couple of years old. Thank you so much for your reply!

When the scene has a space in the name, the plugin adds quotes around it and displays the quotes in touchosc. how would it be possible to eliminate the quotes?

You may be better off adding an underscore instead of a space. But I'll make a note of this.

Hi Tim ! Thank you so much for all these tutorials ! I use Touch OSC on my mac directly, I would like to have a second monitor with informations for live performance. How can I use your patch without using an Ipad and directly on Touch OSC on my computer ? I guess I have to send the information to my IAC but I don't know how I can do ! Thanks !

Hey, happy the tutorials are helpful! I'm not sure exactly what you're asking. You want to connect the desktop version to Ableton?

If I understood you correctly, you can use the TouchOSC editor for that directly. Download the editor on your mac and set up the same OSC connections on the editor (like you would on your ipad), press 'Play' button to run the template (it goes fullscreen) and it should work.

Hey Tim, do know if TouchOSC can get the names of samples in Drum Rack to display on iPad or Tablet? ie 16 triggers with 16 names of samples on them.

Tim I really enjoy your videos. They are very educational. You mention at the beginning of this one about checking out your previous videos about connect OSC messages with Ableton Live and TouchOSC. I am lost with merely connecting my iPad to my PC using TouchOSC. Could you point me to the specific videos where you explain this please?
