The service center has damaged more watches in some form or fashion than in sure they will ever admit to. If you don’t think that the situation deserves careful contemplation, which is what I shared in the video, I don’t know what to say. I guess it must be living in your world where ignoring all risk and assuming everything will be taken care of for you would be nice.

JustBlueFish Watch Reviews I agree with you in some form that the service centre do make mistakes as well, they are humans after all. But what can you do? Do they allow you in to their workshop & let you stare at them what are they doing to your watch? If they do please tell me where is the service center & I’ll definitely support your statement. Sometimes a little trust would make your world a much better place to live in.

@@JustBlueFish I'm surprised you are willing to spend $8500 on a Rolex, but you have no confidence whatsoever in their after sales service!? I recently had an issue when the movement of a Tissot was damaged during servicing. The in-house watch maker of the AD basically wrecked it. I contacted the national office of Swatch and since it was still under waranty and it was clearly the fault of the AD, the national service center fixed it and gave me a brand new movement for free. If an entry level Swiss brand like Tissot does that, I'm sure Rolex would 'fix' any issues caused by their servicing (service center or AD). Whether it requires them to replace the movement or the watch case, they will do whatever it takes to live up to their reputation. It would cost them much more to have bad publicity of poor craftmanship, then to just replace some parts. I'm waiting for my first Rolex (Sub no date) to arrive at the AD in the coming weeks/months, but I can garantee you I would have never spent €6900 on a watch, if I didn't have confidence in both the quality of their products and their after sales service!

I bought a Rolex in January and noticed a blemish on the sunburst of the dial. I brought it into the AD about a week after and the AD saw the same. They recommended sending to RSC. Since the watch has a 5 year warranty I agreed. 5 months later I still don’t have the watch. The AD reported back Rolex had to replace the dial which had to be delivered and done in-house in Switzerland. This is a bit more comforting since the works done at HQ, but time will tell if the watch comes back with any new noticeable blemishes. I’d say take advantage of the warranty regardless of any concerns and let Rolex deal with it. Rolex guarantees their Service and it is up to you on how to control the situation. Nothing is perfect in the world, in life.

JustBlueFish Watch Reviews that had to have happened at an AD repair shop not at the RSC. It’s a fluke but still I would not have left the AD without noticing and registering the damage. I would then have asked for the watch to be sent for restoration to the RSC at the ADs expense-or a trade to a new watch, their choice. Had they declined, anyone can make KZbin videos, Facebook and Yelp reviews of their experiences, making sure not to cross any legal boundaries. In the modern age, a lone committed person can make a lot of noise and even sue in small claims court. Any AD in their right mind will want to avoid this. But-we must assume the story is true-that the AD wantonly damaged a watch and didn’t notice or reveal. Could it be true? Could be. Could it be false? Seems more likely doesn’t it?

I personally would let the AD handle it from start to finish. I know it would take longer possibly but it gives you an extra layer of insurance. I would also photograph every corner of the watch before sending it off and email the pictures to the AD for a paper trail and time stamp. More pictures when it comes back. Plus it will give you a chance to enjoy your other watches while it’s out of order. 👍🏼

One of my wind-up mechanical watches had a bit of 'swarth' (metal debris) lodged against the crystal. So I popped it open myself, removed the movement, extracted the swarth, gave the movement a gentle shake and two more bits of swarth fell out!! I then put it back together. Perfect.

@@JustBlueFish LOL, about $20. Cute Chinese mechanical wind-up watch. My nicest watch is based on the Watch Repair Channel's video about assembling a watch from parts bought on eBay, using an amazing 6497 movement. My Time Grapher 1000 shows exceptional performance. Total cost about $100. Great fun. I do have a "Rolex" (LOL) that cost $10 from a seller in Time Square NYC in 1987. I replaced the battery recently and it still works!! Yeah I don't understand some of these "you're making a big deal comments". First I'm not a hysterical mess. I'm just outlining all the possible options and looking at the risks associated with each one. Secondly a piece of metal floating around inside your watch case is a BAD thing for the watch. Anyone that thinks otherwise and would ignore it, well lets just say I'd never buy a used watch from them.

You bought your Rolex at an AD so you know it came from the best source possible. In doing so you paid more for the watch and now your AD is doing exactly what they should be doing and that is providing you with service after the sale. Let them take on the burden of sending it to Rolex Service. You paid for that already when you purchased the watch from the AD and it seems they are being very professional with you with the options they have given you. I would request your AD not to open the box when it is returned until you are present. You can make the unboxing together with the AD and that way both you and the AD will know the exact condition the watch was returned from Rolex Service. This is a very small problem and I believe all will be well when it is returned. Good luck!

Sent it yourself, it's YOUR watch, you should keep track of it and not make things more complicated by sending it to the official dealer. The doubt of the official dealer screwing things up would be surely higher than dealing with this problem myself, in my opinion. Do not let yourself be nervous about this shipping method, YOU should package the watch yourself and insure that it will be shipped in a condition you are 100% sure to be the best possible, do not allow yourself to be let down by the kind of tape you should use or the specific way to package it. You bought an expensive watch to be part of your history, make this process of repairing it a part of this history, do not let 3rd part people interfere in this path. Good luck!

@@JustBlueFish I understand you perfectly, do not worry about these people finding stuff to make fun of you. I would be thinking the same as you are now. It might seem to be a first world problem, and in some way it is, but as there is money and your mental wellbeing involved you are right to treat this as a serious issue. I tend to think all the possible ways something might go wrong when dealing with watches, either buying, selling or servicing. Throughout the years I have decided to treat these things in a more pragmatic and simple way. Doubts about package? Do it the best you can; doubts about it being damaged during shipping? There is nothing we can do about it. Just like that. The most important thing in this scenario is to not involve your official dealer in it, you just bought the watch from them, that's it, do not let the thought of saving a few dollars with postage deceive you, you should pay for the shipping and with any more expenses with this process, make yourself responsible for that and as a result you'll know you made the best possible decision. I hope everything will go smoothly, do not worry about the weeks or months it might take, it is nothing compared with the years of enjoyment you'll have with the Submanirer. Cheers!

I never understood why official watch services are so slow. All the brands seem to take weeks to over a month to service or repair a watch. I don't get why it should take more than 1-2 days. Why do they let the watches just lie around for weeks? I understand that there can be repair load spikes that can lead to delays on occasion, but for someone like Rolex they should have enough volume for things to even out. And is it really too much to ask that they hire watchmakers slightly over needed capacity to absorb those spikes in work volume? I mean at those prices... Same with most of the other brands. Good service under warranty should be 1. Manufacturer sending you an express shipping label by email 2. 2 days later watch arrives at service center 3. 2 days later service completed 4. Shipping back by express shipping (next day or 2 days max) 5. Watch back within a week Not sure why that's not possible for a premium product.

There’s been some discussion even here on your videos comments that Rolexes are perfect. They are not, and they never were. But things like this doesn’t change the fact hat Rolexes are extremely well made and well performing watches, honestly this doesn’t make me feel anything less about them. People do not understand that as good of quality as they are, they are still mass produced goods, and in large quantities, so it is unrealistic to expect perfection from every piece. I would have the AD open the case and clean it to be honest, I’m not sure an operation like this would be better performed by Rolex. It doesn’t really look like metal debris to me.

It's good to document this experience for those not familiar. You concerns are valid, but like others have commented, perhaps you are overthinking it.. but, it is, after all, an $8+ watch so having concerns is only natural. For me, IF I had a watch like that in your situation, I would hate to be out of direct contact as you say and God knows how long it will take for the watch to come back and hopefully come back better than when you sent it in and not somehow worst. BUT, the clear choice really is to let the Rolex Service Center handle it.. and probably let your AD send it in for you so they take up part of that responsibility. You've paid the premium to get the watch new from an AD and all that that comes with. Take advantage of it and don't pay a penny more out of pocket to send it in yourself. There is still no guarantee it will be any better if you try to intervene in any minor way that you can that the watch will be better off once you've sent it into the RSC. So, if you did take that route to pay to send it in yourself and the packaging and shipping hassle and it did come back less than satisfactory, then you'd probably be even more disappointed you forked up more money thinking maybe it might have made a difference in the service experience when it didn't or won't. You really have no real better choice and just have to trust them, the Rolex AD & RSC, to take care of it. If it does come back worst or another issue such as damage to the case or something else..then raise hell if and when that time comes. And, not to poo poo on your situation.. not at all. But, I think this is a good way to bring things into perspective.. and, a very good reminder for others thinking about buying watches and how much to spend on them that no matter how much more you may pay for a luxury watch that's supposed to have a reputation for perfection, it doesn't guarantee a flawless watch even when new and purchased legit through an AD. However, these facts should not deter one from wanting to purchase such watches, if so desired. But, expect no brand is infallible no matter the cost and reputation.

My AD sent the piece to the Toronto Rolex service centre by private courier , and being out of warranty i had to realize there could be a substantial cost involved . A few days later my A D called me and told me that Rolex was going to repair and do a full service on my Submariner at no cost to me , this was a pleasant surprise . My A D told me that when my watch is complete they will pick it up personally and i can go to the A D and retrieve my watch , pretty good customer service if you ask me . I would let the AD work on the watch, there will be paperwork involved if there is ever a problem with the movement at a later date, plus they will take extra care with your watch.. Also take video of the condition before you drop it off. Most Rolex AD's have an amazing watchmaker inhouse and I would trust them more than the service center and not having the watch up to 6 months for a little piece of junk under the crystal... Also since its an easy fix the watchmaker at the AD might let you watch the work being done, tell them you have a KZbin channel and might want to post a video of the work being done..

Regarding the chipped case. Metal polishing can be done so that any change in the apparent curve is perfectly, utterly, and completely imperceptible. There's probably 10x more capability and flexibility, in terms of the maximum depth of the gouge, in this regard than you might think. And if they get a jeweler involved with the bare case, they can braze in additional precious metal to fill any gaps that are too large. Skilled craftspersons are far more skilled than you might think.

I had a similar issue with a Grand Seiko I purchased new from a authorised dealer in Hong Kong. The Zaratzu polishing has a small imperfection that can be seen when light hits it at a certain angle. Unfortunately I didn't notice it until I got back to the UK. I have been contemplating sending it back to Seiko UK for them to look at, but I know the only way to make it 100% is for it to be sent back to Japan to be repolished. I've decided to just enjoy the watch, I'm guessing I'll get scratches on it sooner or later anyway. Your problem I would definitely want sorted, something floating around inside the dial would really annoy me. Goodluck Guy hope you get it back perfect. 👌

I have an Explorer, the 39mm, which I love and will never part with. Is it perfect? No!, Did it keep +_ 2 seconds (3 seconds + from new..) No. You need to chill...really, if a watch is giving you this much anxiety you need to get rid of it. I dropped my Rolex on a stone floor the other day. The first big drop, we all have them, it is inevitable over time. It fell face down with such a crash on the stone kitchen floor. Not a blemish, still works perfectly. However, it could have been damaged or scratched or the movement wrecked. It's all fixable, its a mechanical watch...infinitely savable. I never worry about my Rolex, its a watch, its expensive and I love it but if you can't just let it be what it was meant to be without the degree of fretting you seem to indicate your better off without it..Love your vlogs but perhaps the intensity of description could be turned down just a notch, after all, as you say, nobody died.

Probably more than you want to know. Going with the AD and sending it off to the service center is probably the best way to go. As you said earlier, nothing is risk-free. Having said that, as you're already doing, document every step of the process, both photographically, and with contemporaneous notes for every step of the way, and document every contact you have with the AD, the service center, or any other person or entity related to this. More than likely, some place in the paperwork that you signed when buying the watch is a dispute resolution clause. Depending on how it's written, it will give you one or several choices if the process does not go to your satisfaction, either the courts, arbitration, mediation, or some combination of those things. Hopefully, the situation will be resolved quickly and satisfactorily for all parties. But if you do have to use the dispute resolution clause, and you prevail, you will probably be entitled to reimbursement of your attorneys fees. If I had to make a prediction, the service center will resolve the issue, you'll get the watch back, and life will go on just as it had before you noticed the problem. I think you mentioned that you live in Florida. For what it's worth, Florida actually has some pretty decent consumer protection laws on the books. Documenting this on your own KZbin watch channel doesn't hurt either. Good luck.

Derek Shearer the problem with that line of thinking is when questioned about the possibility of something going wrong, like the watch coming back with scratches (which happens more often then you’d think) the attitude the AD was kind of like, shit happens. I think “they’d just send it back and get it polished, it’s not like you would get a new watch” was the exact response.

I feel your concerns because you love your Rolex and are passionate about it. I wouldn't worry too much. I would send the watch in and have them correct the problem under warranty. You have no choice. If you leave the metal flake there, it will eventually find the gears and the watch will be damaged and probably after the warranty is over. I bet that there are other pieces of debris inside, so I would ask Rolex to check on that too. This should not have happened to you. This is a quality control problem and Rolex is no longer a brand I desire. And, good idea to give up smoking so you can live longer and enjoy your watches longer. Best of luck to you.

Very interesting topic. When it came to having my Sub 16610 serviced, I went to an authorized service centre at a dealer. I decided not to go to Rolex, which is in my city. The reason is that I felt I would get more personal service at the dealer, specifically I did not want the watch polished. A number of years ago I took a Rolex Oysterquartz to Rolex to get the battery changed. They did the battery change while I waited, but when they came out with the watch, they had also done a quick polish, which I had not asked for. I have heard that Rolex will polish your watch, even if you don't ask for it. My recommendation would be to get the watch checked out at the dealer and have them remove the foreign object. You can even ask to talk to the service technician and make him aware of your concerns about keeping the case in original condition. Rather than tell him you don't want the watch scratched during service, you can be more diplomatic and ask the question, "Will the watch case get scratched when you open it up?" The other option would be to go to Dallas personally and drop the watch off.

You are way too concerned! Of course there is the possibility that something is going wrong. But I bet over 99% of all service cases went well. If I have any issues with my Rolex I would go to my AD (in my case Wempe) and let them handle it. My AD is responsible to me. And I’m sure Wempe has got way more authority to deal with any circumstances that might occur. They are one of the most important business partners of Rolex.

JustBlueFish Watch Reviews There are situations deserving complete evaluation and there are our first world problems. I could understand that you will be pissed if something is going wrong with your watch. That’s okay. But the majority of all service cases went well. Take high resolution photos of your watch in its current condition. Make a short video before you hand over your watch to the AD. Let your AD do his work and take care of you as a customer. Than relax and wait until your watch is back from service. Do a close inspection with your AD. I bet everything is going to be fine! 🤞👍

I recently inherited a Datejust from my grandpa he bought back in the 60s. Should I get it through overhaul? Or should I keep it as a vintage. I am just afraid that changing parts would devalue the fact that everything is original from the 60s.

Most Datejust, especially Pie Pan from the 60's, aren't particularly desireable or rare unless it is a very, very unique dial etc. Get a full overhaul, you aren't going to make much difference to the value of it, if anything make it more desirable after and overhaul and full fresh service. Datejust are fairly common. What you describe is more of a problem with sport models from 60's such as a sub, daytona, GMT or a rare dial day date.

You’ve had it just under 2 years. I had my 116719BLRO just a few weeks and noticed the time keeping was out by up to +20 seconds. It was sent to Rolex UK and they completely dissembled it; cleaned it ultrasonically and reassembled and oiled it with a new weaker mainspring to regulating it. As it passes their Rolex quality control, the dealer and they said it was OK. Rolex only repair watches under the 5-year warranty and even though I asked for a replacement watch, the retailer wouldn’t. I wrote to the CEO of Rolex in Geneva. They did nothing and sent it back to Rolex UK to deal with, saying they couldn’t exchange it as my contract of sale was with the AD and not them and it was entirely up to them. They refused as it had passed the Rolex UK QT after their intervention. Out UK Consumer Law is on a post I made and will tag you. From memory. it is all time limit associated: within a month of purchase, you are entitled to a full refund. Within +6 months; if it cannot be repaired or replaced; you can get a refund and after + 6 ninths but within the expected usable life; up to 6 years if it doesn’t last you can get some money back. I would ask that if it is repaired. They do a full 3-5 year service where it is completely disassembled; cleaned; lubricated and any worn or damaged parts replaced and then regulated to Superlative Chronometer -2 to + 2 seconds a day. Otherwise a new replacement. Don’t loose any sleep over it or make it divert your life though, it’s just a watch and something much worse and life altering may be around the corner and worth the worry. This is definitely not. Do your best and then forget it.

Could you just wait and have it sorted when it’s due for its ~10 year service with Rolex? For such a minor blemish under the crystal, I’d fear that the watch would come back in worse condition (dial damage, dust under crystal, scratches to case/bracelet).

@@JustBlueFish I hate to give up control or the illusion of control, but that watch isn't cheap. Since you have photographic documentation of the condition of the watch, you has some leverage if something goes wrong. Also, I hope you have the watch scheduled on your homeowner's/renter's policy.

I would have the dealer mail it in for you. . . . . They sold you a defective product, what else are they going do about it? I'd expect at least a complementary watch winder case or something for the inconvenience. Why is there so many thumbs down on your video?

I would send it to Rolex themselves. I had a authorized dealer send my Marine Master 1000 six months ago so I hope to see it soon. Anyways I hope it all works out for you.

JustBlueFish Watch Reviews just got it the other day and it’s keeping great time! It winds even smoother than I remember before from the Marine Master 1000. I hope your service goes as well as mine did even though it took a long time.

Keep the watch as is until 4 months before warranty expires and then send it to Rolex. I’m sure they will remove the lint and service the watch for free with extra 2 years Rolex Warranty on top and free polish if the watch needs.

Sent multiple watches to Rolex service center through AD. Take pictures and remember the percentage is very low where issues occur. Don’t live with it if it bothers you.

I did a followup video to this. There were some issues, not that I’m terribly surprised. I was expecting it.
