My Flemish Giant lived to 9 years, he had arthritis in his hips so we were prescribed rhumicam, he loved it mixed with banana, never missed a day. When he refused his favorite treats and his banana mix, I forcefed him some painkiller and brought him in for the last check up. I always complained about how heavy jackrabbit weighed on me, I never realized he was gold

Thank you for the recommendation of Adequan, I definitely need to ask my vet about this and if it's available here. I had two senior buns that got really old (over 10 years), but they both eventually succumed to not being able to walk because of arthritis. My currently oldest bun (9ish years old I think) miraculously still doesn't show much, if any, arthritis sign. I should probably ask about the arthritis medicine because he sometimes, rarely, falls over, but he still shows a lot of energy for jumping on the couch and chasing around the other buns. He has frankly shown an incredible amount of resilience, despite being very prone to stomach issues (mostly congestion, which I have become an expert at treating at home thanks to him and his increasing vet bills) and about 3 jaw abscesses, which left with him by now with barely any teeth in one half of his mouth and only half his incisors, which have to be clipped regularly every three weeks since they can't grind each other down anymore. To everyone: Never give up on your buns!

My bunny is 6 and started sneezing about a year ago. He went through 2 rounds of medicine and got a lot better but did not stop entirely. Lately it has been getting worse. They recommended sedation and dental X-rays for several hundreds of dollars. And if they find what they think it could be...that will cost much more to fix. Any thoughts? Has this happened to any of y’all? And he rarely touches his bowl of water. I rinse it and put fresh water in it and it never looks lower. I guess he gets his moisture from the leafy greens I give him twice a day. Hmmm...

One of mine started having watering eyes and sneezing. It turned out my mom was using a carpet cleaning fluid that she was allergic to. I hope your solution is simple too!
@Trainingthroughlife2 жыл бұрын
Yes it’s very normal to need extensive testing and pricey vet treatment when your rabbit is a senior. When my previous rabbit Mocha was about 6-7 he went through dental work, a CT scan of his entire body, nasal flushing, and had to visit an opthomologist. If you are struggling covering the cost I would look into Care Credit (or your parents).
@dollyplainjane47532 жыл бұрын
@@Trainingthroughlife Thanks for telling me about care credit. I will google it. You made me laugh about the parents comment. I’m the parent (64) who has a bunny. My husband loves him more than his Siberian Husky so I guess I’ll use my S.S. check on Reesee instead of groceries.
@CrZY86502 жыл бұрын
He is in that age that I would not invest that much money on an older rabbit, because they can still develop other problems and problems with the teeth are also making their life quality worse. With my experience you are only making them go through too much pain when trying surgeries, meds etc, and it still often results in death. As long as he seems to enjoy life I would just let him be and when he doesn't enjoy it anymore I would take him to the vet and let him go to rabbit heaven
@dollyplainjane47532 жыл бұрын
@@CrZY8650 Thank you for honest advice. I spent a thousand dollars and after the sedation, X-rays and teeth filing, he went downhill for a month. I started him on critical care and another medicine and he is a lot more active and eating a little more. But he bit me hard two days ago while I was petting him. I’m not having any more doctor help. I’m 65 and ready to say good bye to him when he gets sick again. Thanks again. Btw...the vet was not willing to help him get to heaven a little sooner.

Good points, thanks for sharing. My almost 7yr old lionhead has become even MORE curious recently. I trained him as a trick bun 2 years ago and stopped working with him so he seems bored now, because he's so curious when I'm around. I might need to try more tricks! 😏 My rescue dwarf is around 8 or 9 and he's very curious and active when hes awake! But he does sleep a lot in the day.

My oldest rabbit is only a month older than Sterling. My other rabbit is just under a year younger than him. Neither of them show any signs of old age, the oldest one doesn't act like anything is wrong or any signs of arthritis. Hopefully they won't have it or have it bad at all.

Question: You mention your space heater alleviating arthritis symptoms in your buns. I have a bun that is relatively young (should be about 3 by now) who just loves when it's REALLY warm. She usually sits everywhere in a loaf form, but when she finds a warm spot, she seeks that out and lies long over there, even flops there. She really loves the summer sun and will lie down directly in the sun ray, and I have gotten an electic heat mat this winter that she absolutely loves ever since she discovered it. She doesn't show any problems with movement or pain otherwise. Do you think that could be signs of arthritis in such a young bun, or might she just be a bun that likes it more when it's warmer?

They're an huge problem with metacam that you didn't mention (and maybe are not aware of) : it is an anti-inflammatory that really have a bad impact on the kidneys. It's usually not given for more than 3 days, unless if for exemple the animal is in his end of life and the pro's are more important than the con's.

Normally if they have bad arthritis they may not use it as much if they struggle moving around. But if they have good mobility they should use it the same unless they have an underlying issue

I don't know but it sounds like your vet is using you for money and getting you to pay for all sorts of unnecessary meds, appointments etc. My opinion is that you take the rabbit to the vet when it acts weird or have symptoms and have a check up once a year when they get vaccinated. Also always push the vet to give an HONEST answer about realistic survival rates and life quality in critical conditions so you don't put your rabbit through unneccessary pain

Have you had a rabbit with teeth issues? Specifically molars that grow into cheek/tongue? Mine WILL NOT eat hay, or at least not enough - have tried EVERY brand (SPS, Oxbow, others), EVERY hay type (Timothy - all cuttings, Orchard, Meadow, Oat, even alfalfa and every mixture of them), even let her graze on my back lawn (untreated), EVERY source (farm, pet store, online) and every trick (treats, herbs, forage mixed in, less pellets, no pellets, less salad, no salad etc.) she would rather be hungry than eat hay and I can’t let her not eat. I’m out of ideas to get her to eat hay.
