Mable Whatley they do this in Netherlands. College students can live at nursing home at no cost as long as they are enrolled in school full-time. This helps a lot of elderly to socialize with younger generations and do activities together. I feel like America should do something like that so a lot of elderly people don't feel depressed.
@phookadooable

I totally agree and yes it made me cry too. It does two things one it helps the elderly patients have interactions that they normally wouldn't have and feel that they are not just wharehoused in a facility. Two, teaches the children value of our elderly and for some may be the only interaction with a grandparent figure that they wouldn't have plus respect and love for the elderly. It is amazing what love can do especially now at this time.

I worked at a retirement home for 3 years here in CA. Whenever my co workers brought their kids over, all of the eldery residents lighted up with joy. Even the "violent and hard to deal with ones" when they saw the kids, they reverted back to when they were parents/grandparents/great grandparents/etc. I wish I could have done more for them.

letting the elderly be isolated is unnatural. at every stage of our evolution, the elders of the tribe would be constantly interacting with the kids of the tribe, teaching them new things and feeling like their life experience and wisdom has value for everyone around them. loneliness and depression do negatively effect health. this daycare center needs to be just how things are done. it makes sense.

Such a brilliant idea! My girls ADORED their great-grandmother. She lived till the age of 94 & I truly believe that she gained an extra 10yrs of live just because of the joy she had at watching them grow up. We went to visit her twice a week & she LIVED for those days & she took good care of her health so she could be with them as long as possible. She was also a GENIUS at rocking them to sleep.😍

An amazing way to both give children more chances to have meaningful one-on-one interactions with adults (and they clearly take them!) and stave off a far too common cause of depression in the elderly: feeling like they're no longer useful, and have become just a burden. I hope the residents are reminded of how much they give the children just by being there with them.

Oh God, I have tears in my eyes. As someone who taught day care/preschool for 11 years and now work in a nursing home. The two generations have so many great gifts to give each other. The oldest and the youngest in our communities have one very very big thing in common in our societies. They need the most love! Why not bring them together? I think the the elders can see the youngsters and know that life is still going on. There is beauty in knowing that even when you fade away the young are still being born. I imagine one looks at that and takes great comfort. The world will still go on when they arn't there. It isn't sad, it's beautiful! The elders feel that they are needed and can remember back to when their children are young. I work on a Dementia Unit now and as a kid whenever i went with girlscouts or with church groups that unit scared me. Partly because the leaders and workers would tell us that the residents might yell or touch them or do something unexpected. Honestly, yes there are times when elders with dementia can get violent but I have never seen that happen when a child has visited. A visit from a child calms them and you start seeing them wanting to toss a ball with the child or play with the balloons. Even people with minds that arn't as sharp as they were suddenly feel like they can do something for that child. You see them light right up. For the child it is amazing to them to have someone who will take the time to stop and look at the little things with them, play games with them, wont rush them. The elders and the children leave eachother both feeling valid and important. It takes a community to raise a child but, really thats not the case - it takes a community to take care for eachother at every stage of life.

What a brilliant idea to have a child care centre in the first floor so that they have a long term connection over several months. Wonderful for these adults who have so much to give and these children who learn a human lesson of a lifetime. We fund both kinds of institutions ourselves. Why can we not fund how we care for our smallest and oldest differently? Follow models like this, not dangerous private care homes that just warehouse people for a profit.

When my grandmother was sickly each daughter took a month and she lived with that daughter. The grandchildren helped also. How can they have children and be abandoned ? So very sad. What the children don't realize is they are getting older and their children will repeat what they've been taught. That can be a scary thought.

I'm 15 and have lived with my grandparents for 7years and their stubborn and diabetics and there were many hospital trips. Though I am glad to have lived with them and love them it was rough.
