A debate isn't needed, the general opinion of people who have tried all of them is unanimous. The HD 660 S sounds the best overall, without compromise. Of course they are also the most expensive, so the value per dollar is still a personal consideration. But if you want the best, and don't mind spending a bit more, it's a no brainer to go for the 660 S.
@LokiOdinson4 жыл бұрын
@@JDS_im WTF you talking about!? 660s r dumping shit with shity HD700 driver. No clarity, no clear mids, harsh highs and bad THD! HD600/650 is unbeatable, with flat FR +-3bd. 660s has bigger beep hole in the mid and wobbling midbass. That why sennheiser try to sell all HD700 drivers with good old chassis.

This kind of comparison is invaluable to consumers, especially the way you have done it here. It's amazing how clearly one can hear the differences between these headphones using this technique, even through my old and inexpensive CambridgeSoundworks computer speakers. There's definitely more 'meat on the bones' with the HD58X, but the 600s seem to have more air/ breathy/ lighter feel by comparison. I think preference would be largely a matter of taste, and musical preferences (it seems like the 58X handled jazz a bit better, whereas the 600s handled acoustic guitar and vocals better/ more clearly/ with more air). Great video!

Jubilee sounds more fun, more mid bass and lower treble, but damn the HD600 gets freakishly close to the original recording. I'm more convinced then ever the HD600s are truly reference. Awesome recording quality too, I'm wearing DT880s and kept thinking I was wearing my HD600s.

Have the DT800-600 with extra damping in front of drivers to reduce the Beyer treble, but after hearing HD600, my preference is more towards Sennheiser for easy listening. Thought for picking things in the mix DT880 are very useful. Now with moded 58X to get rid off the low mids-upper bass and lift treble (muddiness and vail) I decided to keep it, thought I wish they have better resolution and transparency.

For my tastes the 58x has a much warmer fuller rich sound that I was hoping for. The 6xx are great for more vocal heavy/critical listening but considering the 58x are about $60 cheaper atm and are only 150ohm so I won't need to spend as much money on a dac/amp to power them properly, they take the cake for me.

thank you for the excellent comparison. Your method of going from A, to B, to Original is very effective. (though I might suggest when you switch, make sure if there are vocals in A, there are also vocals in B and Original. It doesn't help much to go from vocals to not vocals when switching back and forth.) . I have always been slightly dissatisfied with the tonal balance of the HD600, even after all these 25 years, with modest amplification. I have wondered if there might be cans with almost as much reveal in the midrange, but with slightly more base, and slightly less energy from 2k - 5k. Perhaps if I had tubed amplification? Though 10 years ago I did have a Portaphile $300 amp that didn't correct that issue. I prefer not to equalize... I guess I'm old school purist. . Re the 2k - 5k range, there are certain sounds which sound irritating in the 600... for example, the hand clapping in a live performance, or most especially, as I've found on multitudes of recordings, the sound of a drum stick being struck on the rim of the drum in keeping with the beat. That THWACK, THWACK, THWACK of the drumstick being struck sounds up at the front of the band and too loud, also a little irritating. . Regarding the bass area of the 600, I find the bass is there and very clean, and I can hear it if I think about it, but there is something lacking where I don't feel like tapping my foot. I think I would prefer less clean, but more sound pressure to make my foot tap. . I am ordering the 58x, and will be selling my HD600s on ebay. May not be completely what I want, but thanks to your review, I know it is at least closer.

@robinraff14865 жыл бұрын
the thing with the AMP is that when your Phone has its own Output Impedance combined that with the Impedance of the HD600 (300Ohm) will change over the frequency range. At some Frequency`s the Cans (Drivers) will end up not getting enough juice. The iPhone 6 has pretty typical power output for a portable: Driving 15 ohms: 45 mW Driving 30 ohms: 25 mW Driving 300 ohms: 3 mW These HD600s are 300ish ohms with sensitivity around 97 dB/mW. The iPhone manages 3 mW for a load like this, so we're looking at maybe 101 dB max. Weak sauce, particularly since that's the loudest possible volume and the average volume for most recordings (that aren't Metallica) will be quite a lot lower. (If you raise the average levels with a maxed-out amp, the peaks won't get any louder, but they will clip and distort.) Compare Oppo's PM3: that one does 101 dB/mW with impedance around 30 ohms. With 25 mW from the iPhone, we end up at 115 dB; much more potent. You'd need 63 mW at 300 ohms (about 25 times as much power) to get the same volume from the HD600. There's another benefit to low output impedance: better bass control. Speakers tend to get sloppy and distort at frequencies near their resonance peaks (where the enclosure amplifies sound energy instead of damping it). That manifests as a muddy, definition-smothering bass hump. The best way to prevent this distortion (assuming you want to; some people actually like it) is with electrical damping, the ability of the amp to electrically resist unwanted movement (much like it's hard to spin a motor if you've shorted the power terminals). To keep bass distortion and frequency response changes inaudible, the amp's impedance needs to be, if not zero, at least 8 times less than the headphone impedance (the various iPhones tend to be 5-10 ohms). I hope that covers a few (why AMP?) questions. :)
@Artem_Shepelev5 жыл бұрын
So 600's have sensitivity 97 dB/mW, but with output of 3 mW will only get to 101 dB max (and not three times more), why? I am not very good at this subject and don't really understand physics, so it would be nice if you could explain that
@furiosarana18575 жыл бұрын
@@Artem_Shepelev it is quite complicated math as there are multiple scales, voltage(volts), sound pressure(dB), power(watts) and perceived loudness. The relation between them is different sometimes linear or exponential or logarithmic. Honestly don't try to understand it as you will forget it the next time you need it. Use tools like digizoid's headphone power calculator(Google it) to get a rough idea. If you want to know more check out nwavguy's blog that also explains the output/input impedance situation ( also better that OP).
@furiosarana18575 жыл бұрын
Also an addition to amps. Most amps aren't "power limited" directly but voltage limited or current limited (only truly power limited into one impedance at which they are both voltage and current limited). (Low impedance) low sensitivity headphones need lots of current (and little voltage) and high impedance (high sensitivity) headphones need lots of voltage ( and little current) to get X dB of output. That is why high impedance headphones usually only need an amp that is loud enough (voltage limited) and low sensitivity headphones might be loud enough theoretically (enough voltage) but the amp (of a smartphone for example) isn't able to deliver the current and the sound gets coloured (bass usually gets muddy).
@furiosarana18575 жыл бұрын
@@Artem_Shepelev TL:DR about output impedance: (input) impedance of headphones is not the same at every frequency. Ratio between output impedance of amp and input impedance of headphone determines volume (and more). Rule of thumb for most headphones is input impedance > 8x output impedance and the effect of changing ratio is within 1db (not noticeable)
@robinraff14865 жыл бұрын

Nice that you can actually hear the differences in treble resolution the 600 has over the 58X when demoed like this. Dammit, I need to get an EARS now. A lot of people will probably go for the 58X for the warmer bass and less shouty mids, but I don't see why you couldn't just equalize up the 600's bass a little, since it sounded cleaner when I compared these regardless of quantity. But if you don't have an amp...yeah 58X makes sense. Would be nice to see 6XX added to this mix as well.

@D Master when you actually try it yourself to EQ the 58X, it becomes more clear that it's a resolution problem in the treble than just tuning in my experience. The bass is cleaner in the HD 600 to start with, even though it has less extension. So actually I'm not totally sure how the two would end up after "flattening" the bass on both to the same level. Maybe Oluv can try equalizing headphones and re-recording them with similar looking responses...that would be really interesting. Anyway...no, I don't know of an Android parametric EQ. Let me know if you find one cause I haven't found a solution that problem of equalizing on a phone yet myself either

@D Master If you have Viper4Android you can create a DDC for these parameters (works like a parametric EQ)

It's around the 8:40 mark that you can hear the difference most clearly IMO, but owning both these cans I'm not sure it's really a lack of resolution in the 58XJ as it is an emphasis on the 600. It could be a combination of both, but if you compare the 600 to the 650/6XX you hear a very similar effect. I think what D Master is saying is that the 600 is a little bass shy, and any attempt to EQ it up on the 600 is going to cause more issues than EQing it down on the 58X. I would love to hear both equalized to similar response level - that would be very interesting indeed.

I also love the high mid/treble presentation of the 600, moreso than the 58X or 650. But it's the only headphone of the three I find lacking after switching back to it from the others - mainly because it just doesn't have the low end and lower mids, and it just sounds thin after listening to the other two for a while. Psychoacoustics will compensate for that after a short while, but I really wish for the bass presentation of the 58X with the mids treble of the 600.

Also on the resolution aspect - compare 6:11 to 6:30 - with the frequency range in this song both headphones sound very similar in resolution.

I was set on the 6XX until I ran across this video. For the type of music, I think the 58X will suit me better. Thank you!

Hello Oluv realy nice job! Some people think that removal foam from grill in HD58X changes the sound of headphones and others think that it does not change anything. Is there a chance to check it by you? I personally think that every interference in the driver it reflects on the sound quality. What do you say?
