Sennheiser ME80 ME66 shotgun microphone shootout

This is a quick test of the ancient Sennheiser ME80 and it's replacement ME66 and their suitability as an on board microphone for the Dslr used in video mode.
Also of interest and demonstrated is the Electro-Voice 635a and the Sennheiser ME64

I used a ME66 for a film shoot two years ago it proved a very usuable shotgun mic on boom - very rich sound the editor complimented me on the quality.

Curiously I brought out this microphone ME80 this afternoon and I was surprised that there were no more batteries on the market. But I found a turnaround for this issue. Put 4 L44 batteries on top of each other, hold them together with adhesive tape. Together they make 6 volts and it works very well.

Thanks for the comparison. I was in a pinch and bought a used ME80 from an older guy on Craigslist.. he did lots of audio recording and he swore by it. I used the ME66 years ago but can't remember the sound and I've always wondered if it would be worth upgrading. I like the ME80 but wish it were a little more sensitive.

The ME80 and ME66 recordings are clipped a little on peaks. Probably the preamp being used, though it could be due to low battery voltage.

Dunno but just off the top of my head I would think the Me66 should sound decent with the H4n if you get the version of the Me66 that has the battery module. It has plenty of output so the pre-amps on the H4n shouldn't be a factor as far as I know. I believe the noise problem occurs mostly when you have a mike with not much output and have to crank the volume on the H4n to get a good level. I record at 24/96 so that may make a difference at least in the raw audio file.

Very charming, but not very methodical. He's standing at different distances when auditioning the two mics. He's closer to the ME80 than he is to the ME66. I'm guessing about 1-2 feet. This makes the ME80 sound fuller and brighter than the ME66. See for yourself... Playback the ME80 at 3.18 when he says "how now brown cow". Then quickly playback 5.14, the ME66 "how now brown cow". Not to mention, he turns his head during the ME66.

Great comparison, thanks I would have added a sony lapel mike for comparison between engineered sound and modern ENG crews total lack of undertanding about audio, they dont even check levels any more or use headphones, single cameraman ops, "if the meter is moving then it's fine" --- "right???" Yeah. BBC in the UK used to be the bastion of good engineering, they dont do any such stuff any more on the 24 hour news feed and tell the "editors" what an audio reference level is etc etc hahahaha.....
