We knew Doug and Joy Perry through church when I was a rookie officer back in ‘92-‘96 in Hendersonville, NC. Great people and he was a mentor to me in many ways. Joy Perry was a wonderful soul and the driving force behind Doug’s success and he would readily admit that. She is greatly missed.

What a joy to hear that voice again! I trained with Hanshi Perry and Jason for several years in the late 80s when Jason was in high school. Many life lessons learned from that kind and powerful warrior...

I had the rare and distinct privilege of studying under this great man for nearly 5 years back in the early to late 80's in my hometown of Hendersonville, NC and it changed my life and personal character forever. He is truly extraordinary both inside and out. In his younger days, as both a fighter and practitioner, he was absolutely formidable (a MACHINE) but in his humility, he'll never admit it. I remember his son when he was still in junior high. It has been remarkable to see Jason follow in his Dad's footsteps in achieving greatness.

Both of these men are outstanding instructors. I began training with Sensei Doug Perry at the age of nine and, 27 years later, I am still training as a fourth degree black belt (yondan). Whether you're already a student and want to expand on your knowledge of karate/kobudo or if you're new to the art, you'll have a blast training with them.

To all you 20, 30, 40, 50 year old 10th degree Masters! Doug Perry at 83 years old is the REAL DEAL! A "TRUE" 10th Degree MASTER! Like Doug Perry said, it takes years and years of study to perfect your art and you still will die before you get there! FORGET RANK! The only thing on your mind should be the perfection of your art! DOUG, your my HERO!

So much love expressed for his family and karate in this interview. I have never met Perry Sensei but I have heard so many great stories about him from one of my Sensei. I hope I still am able to train and have the love and passion for karate that I do at 83. Because many things he said remind me of myself and my view of karate.

Great video! I grew up in Okinawa and witnessed many American servicemen taking Karate lessons in the dojo when I was a child in early 70s. I was really impressed by their dedication and utmost respect to the Sensei and Okinawan culture. Later I moved to states as a military brat to Cherry Point, NC Marine Corps Air Station in mid 70s. While there I took many different martial arts class from Marines who have learned arts in Okinawa. Including Shorin ryu from sensei Bill Hayes along with Uechi Ryu from GySgt and Shotokan from MGySgt Haas. These outstanding sensei molded my teenage mind to look up at them and I wanted to be just like them. At later in Shotokan training, my mother couldn't afford to pay for the lessons anymore so I told my sensei but he simply said don't worry about it and just continue with my training. After high school, I joined Marines and I'm still practicing Karate today because of these fine men inspired me to this journey. Semper Fi. I am forever grateful to Okinawa and Marines

His deep knowledge of Okinawan classical karate and showing a genuine interest in the students learning experience has shaped my perspective. He is a true warrior and a sincere gentleman.

Sensei Perry was, after my parents, the most influential person of my childhood. I studied in his dojo as a young teenager and had the privilege of learning from him in church as well when he taught the young men's group I was part of. I didn't have the dedication or drive to follow him into Karate, but I absolutely learned a philosophy for life by listening to his words and experiencing his presence. I have yet to meet another man who so easily wears the mantle of leadership, respect, and influence.

At one point I had about 6 or 7 close friends that we got together all the time to spare , grapple , watch videos of different masters and different sport systems.
