After our last Tech Tuesday video on Trigger Systems we've received a lot of questions about the differences between the Hall Effect and Reluctor type sensors and their strengths/weaknesses. In this video the Tuning Forks addresses those questions and talks us through those two main types of trigger sensors. Enjoy:)

Been wanting to wire up a haltech to my motorcycle for ages since most management systems in bikes are 90s spec. This really helps to figure out the type of trigger I have. Thank you.

Hall Effect for racing applications and Reluctor for street daily driving use. Reasons for this are simple. Hall effect has the advantage of working better in high vibration systems such as racing. Reluctor has the advantage of being more precise and less to go wrong in a reliability environment such as a daily driver. The drawbacks of the reluctor system is that it highly sensitive to corrosion issues. The drawback to Hall effect is that programming is a nightmare when tuning or troubleshooting sensitive electronics and requires tracking of signal information by the use of some form of oscilloscope or data tracker. They both have drawbacks and advantages but for most applications with modern fuel injection, hall effect is usually the way to go.

What corrosion issues are you referring to? The sensor itself?

The four wires (A,B,C,D) crankshaft position sensor with permanent magnet in triggering side indicates its wiring diagram two wires as return1&return2 and the remaining two wires as output signal1&signal2. This means ckp sensor can be catagorized as Reluctor or Hall effect.

Can you do something on when to use shielded wires? There seems to be alot of opinions and assumptions made around when it is necessary.

Thank you very much . If I understand good for a reluctor sensor (two wires) it doesn't matter wich wire is connected to the + and to the ground . Little later: I find it does matter

Great info and this may actually explain my issue with an inconsistent tacho signal off the cam. Are all two sensor inputs going to be the reluctor type? What is the typical BMW/Mini use? I am using this sensor part number 13-62-7-588-095-m14 which only has two wires fed directly from the ECU. Current spacing is about 1mm, which would be too big based on your video. One thing I notice as the engine warms up is that the signal may drop in or out and sometimes not work altogether until it cools down. The sensor is hot to the touch but not burning (maybe 75 C). It could also be that the vibrations or heat expansion or that it's a cheap sensor maybe. This is only for the tachometer and electric power steering not the engine.

Great video!!! I'm trying to adapt an reluctance calibrated ECU (2 wires) to my setup (3 wires hall sensor)... The ECU is execpecting a peak voltage of 0,7v or more on peak... And my sensor is sending 0,8v on the low., 4,5v on peak... I wonder if there is a difference in AC / DC among them too, if it is important... Is there a way to adapt this hall signal voltage to the ones my ecu is expecting? I would rather not mess with my current sensor since it is correctly wired and powered and sensing correctly... Is it possible with a resistor or something else? Anyway, congrats, greatvideo, it made it all clear to me now..

Does the wheel need to have the teeth at the perimeter, or can it be a ring with holes in it? How perfect does the wheel have to be? Can I just use laser-cut steel, or do I need to have it machined? I want to pinch a reluctor wheel between a button clutch and flexplate.

Wondering If a common failure for reluctor sensors is the gap changing over time. Had a gt forester that would cut out once hot and had to wait to cool to start again, was the crank angle sensor in the end, maybe the gap would change.

Can someone do a more detailed how to wire an ecu please? Would be cool to see how to wire not only these sensors but make a coil harness, injector harnesses, where to get ur positives and where to ground things properly, etc..

Hopefully i can get some help from the master. Can a 2-wire speed Reluctor sensor be converted into a 3 wire harness to be connected on a display that accepts 3 wire sensor(the stock sensor is hall effect). This is a front speed sensor on a dirt bike. Reason im asking is to be able to have a speedometer working on my dahs.

With regard of wiring of trigger and home. For ground there is spastic ground which gose to ECU ground. Can we interconnect it with other sensors to cylinder at the same time?

Hi, guys! Please, help! How to connect reluctor sensor to haltech elite ECU??? First wire of sensor connected to SPI2, second wire to ground, but in diagnostic window SPI2 - 0 Hz. When I connecting oscillograph to sensor, see sinus amplitude ~1.0V. Sorry for my English 😅 and thanks
