Figure .09 is a song where I'm continuously struck by how good it is, despite rarely being mentioned as one of their "greats", or a favourite of many. Lyrically, I think it's incredibly strong. I think you're spot on, in that it can certainly be about a parent/guardian; many people grow up to realise that they replicate behaviours learned from people who hurt them, even ending up hurting others in ways they never wanted to, ways they were hurt themselves. But I also think the lyrics are very broad, like it could also be about, say, how after having been bullied, you might find yourself telling yourself the same things your bullies said about you, you've become how they were towards you to yourself, continuing the damage despite no longer having those people in your life. Same with an abusive relationship; maybe you start thinking you're unwanted and should be grateful for whatever you get, you should stop being so "selfish" all the time, stop nagging people, etc.; all the things your abusive partner tried to convince you of. Even if you escape, you might "carry that person with you". The strength of Figure.09's lyrics, I think, is how spot on they are about the pattern, and how hurtful and frustrating it is, all while being so non-specific about it's exact nature and the "you" in the song. Very well done!
