Song Info Here: "The Wonder of You" is a song written by Baker Knight. It was originally recorded by Vince Edwards in 1958, but this recording has never been released. In an interview with a DJ from Chattanooga, Tennessee, Ray Peterson told the story of how Baker Knight confided that "The Wonder of You" was originally written as a gospel song. In 1959, "The Wonder of You" was first released by Ray Peterson as a single. The song became a Top 40 hit for him on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #25, and it briefly re-entered the Hot 100 peaking at #70, in 1964. The 1959 Ray Peterson recording also reached #23 in the UK. Elvis Presley had a No. 1 hit in the UK and a Top 10 hit in the U.S. with his 1970 live version of "The Wonder of You" recorded in Las Vegas, Nevada in February 1970. The song was released as a single on April 20, 1970, backed by the song "Mama Liked the Roses". In the United States, both songs charted at #9 together during 27 June - 11 July 1970. "The Wonder of You" was one of his most successful records in the UK ever, topping the UK Singles Chart for six weeks in the summer of that year. It has sold over 400,000 equivalent units in the UK, qualifying the single for a gold sales certification in 2022.[ It also stayed at number one in the Irish Charts for three weeks that same year. This was the 59th Top 40 hit of his career. What can one say? He’s wonderful. His talent is so passionate and transferable right to our hearts and souls. All the songs he does with the latter suit seem more serious. He’ll do one called Don’t cry daddy with this suit and he looks so sad at the end. He looks up, bites his lip and I couldn’t figure out why he seemed so sad. Then I found out he was singing it on the death of his mom and there are px of him crying with his dad back then. So I think he was in a somber mood through these songs. He always makes you feel what he’s feeling and sometimes when he’s melancholy, we feel that too. Unbelievable talent and his greatest gift he left us that he makes you feel he’s singing directly towards you. He’s so emotive when he sings. I feel all his songs are a memoir or an autobiography of his life. Especially later he has a really down time and his songs are beautifully haunting, but so melancholy and it fits what goes on in his life or the mood he is in. I think that when Elvis did his old 50's stuff in his concerts, he did a lot more fooling around, sort of making fun of himself. Absolutely gorgeous song. Another song Elvis made his own. Remember when we told you Elvis would get even better? Seph, I don't think they write many songs like this any more. The contrast between Gene and Elvis is astronomical. The amazing thing is that every note, every voice, every instrument in the performance is at the direction of ELVIS! This is the way HE wanted the song heard. He was a genius.

I saw Elvis in concert in 1975 in Norfolk, Virginia. The wonder of you was my favorite song of the day. When he hit that last note, I thought the building was gonna shake and crumble down on top of all of us. What ovation he got after that song! He knew how to hit one out of the park! I think he meant it for his fans. He said that a lot. He always continued to say, without the fans there would be no Elvis. And no one could put the feelings across like this man. He so admired opera singer Mario Lanza, and had all his records. Lanza had A powerful operatic voice but when Mario was told that Elvis was a fan, he said, "I would love to have Elvis' beautiful voice". Elvis' sound is so different. There is a British Guy and a voice teacher that took Elvis singing " I Can't Help Falling in Love With you". He took the studio version and tried to auto tune it. And it couldn't be done. One thing Elvis had perfect pitch and an unusual depth and range. Very high and very low. He was called a Baritone, but had tenor quality and bass qualities. Unusual. I've learned so much from Fil on Wings of Pegasus. It's been a while since I watched that one, but I believe it was Elvis' vibrato that threw it off. Auto tune snaps the note to the closest line and Elvis' vibrato was so broad that while it snapped to the note, it was the *wrong* note and just sounded weird. I hope they never try to auto tune or pitch correct Elvis; it would be the worst kind of sacrilege to mess with that voice.

I guess it would depend on how their contracts are written up. 🤷 Although many artists *are* doing it because "everyone does it". Sadly, it's an industry standard now. Fil on Wings of Pegasus pointed out that it's all about money. Pitch correction and auto tune brings the not so great singers up and the great singers down, so that everyone is on the same level, meaning more overall sales/money for the record companies. I guess if they ever do, we'll have to start a KZbin channel with "NO AUTO TUNE! THE REAL ELVIS!" in the title. 😉 (I'm pretty sure between us we probably have a whole lotta Elvis. I'm 61 and a fan since childhood.) I told my 18 yr old grandson that I think I might be too old for this world and he said, "Nonna, *I'm* too old for this world." 😂

A song in my opinion not played enough. This is more of a sweet type love song w-no "fooling" around - a little more serious, luscious & delicious. I believe the soprano here was Millie Kiirkham at that time (Millie left to have surgery); she was replaced very shortly after by Kathy Westmoreland. Millie passed away in 2014 age 91.

The temptation isn't really a problem, i struggle with spoiling myself. Its a daily struggle to not accidentally see or hear or read something about his future. I've been spoiled on a couple of things though. How he died was a big one. I learned that through a comment... 😭

These songs with this ladder jumpsuit were sung August 13th 1970. This song, My Boy, In The Ghetto etc. always subdued a bit. He looked so sad singing Don’t Cry Daddy and it hit me that this was the Anniversary date the evening either before or if it’s the midnight show on the day his mom died whom he was so close to. I always wondered if he was thinking of her these songs on this date, especially Don’t Cry Daddy was why he seemed so subdued. 😢❤❤❤❤. Note how he is singing the songs on this date in the red ladder suit. Elvis, as you know was not one to hide his emotions when he sang. 😊🥹💔💔🎤🎤

"Play it James." Just something about it always makes me smile. The incomparable James Burton is still living; one of the few members of Elvis's bands & backup singers who still are. After Elvis's passing he went on to play for John Denver & a host of others but he's said that his favorite memories are playing with Elvis.

The intoxication you are expressing here is simply intoxicating! "Oh! Yes! Oh! Oh, my heart!" (4:26) Oh, Jesus, Seph, please don't have a heart attack! Please! 🙏 "I love how he gets a bit quieter there as well. Oh my God, I cannot, I cannot hold it in! I'm going crazy inside! That reminded me of an absolutely heartbreaking song called *"Writing to Reach You"* by UK band *Travis.* It has the lyric, "My inside is outside. My right side's on the left side. Cuz I'm writing to reach you now." It's one of my all-time favorite songs. Slays me every time. I love that reference to *Gene Pitney's "Looking Through the Eyes of Love"* snippet where he sings, "But in the eyes of my woman I stand like a hero, a giant, a man who's as tall as can be." (6:40) For this is, of course, how we see you. One of my favorite artists, *Marc Almond,* who was the singer in 80s new wave band *Soft Cell,* did an amazing duet with *Gene Pitney* in 1988 of a song Gene originally popularized in 1967 called *"Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart."* Marc and Gene's duet was a #1 single in the UK for 4 weeks in January of 1989. The video they made for the song was shot in Las Vegas and is truly gorgeous. It's easily one of my favorite songs Marc has recorded.

@@sammy_the_uncool2702 Oh, Sammy, this is such a tough question for me. I'd love to say, "Yes, I'm a musician!" But in my heart I know I need to add the modifier, "hack." 😉 I played saxophone in elementary school and junior high. I really enjoyed it and I become as proficient as a child can on the instrument. But in 8th grade, I ditched the saxophone for a far more sexy instrument, the synthesizer! Which made complete sense as I was completely consumed with Depeche Mode, New Order, and the whole new wave scene. I found like-minded fellow students who also bought synths to form my high school synth-pop band, Vital Red. We learned to play and program all of our favorite new wave tunes and performed them at high school assemblies and special events. It was a ridiculous amount fun! And our fellow students loved it! We were rock stars in our tiny world! My senior year of high school, I attended a talent show at a neighboring high school. Amongst the performers was a student named John who was doing something very similar to me, only he was performing his own song. It was a hard-hitting industrial tune in the vein of Ministry. After the performance I was introduced to John and I told him I'd also written a song with a similar vibe. We hit it off and met up a week later to work together on the tune I had written. He laid down a vocal track and reprogrammed the drums. In the following weeks and months we worked together to finish up the material he'd been working on. Followed by performing at a Chicago new wave/industrial teen dance club called Medusa's. At the same time we started to shop our material to record labels, eventually finding a home on an independent Belgium label with worldwide distribution, KK Records. Our first record came out in November of 1991. We included a "fan mail" address on the album and it was a real trip to get letters and drawings from kids in parts of the world I didn't know existed! We played out extensively in Chicago at the local clubs and continued to write and record new material. The early 90s saw a real rise in this type of industrial rock and we tried to catch that wave, but were a little late to the scene. Bands like Ministry and Nine Inch Nails were really seeing the big time and we wanted to give that a go. So we sought out a major label deal instead of continuing with the indie label, but ultimately fell short. In 1996 my bandmate relocated to L.A. but I stayed behind in Chicago to continue my day job. I had just graduated from the University of Illinois with an Electrical Engineering degree and had been hired to work at an audio electronics company. John struck out attempting to get a major label deal in L.A. but did continue to make music. I helped John self-release a new album of material after I moved out to L.A. in 2002 and we briefly rekindled the live band. John has continued to write and self-release music, and although I no longer work with him on new material, we are very close and I give him feedback on what he's done. I recently put together a KZbin Music playlist of my favorite material from our band if you are interested in hearing what I've been describing. The past two days have just zapped me of energy. Plus I'm currently experiencing that particular time of the month that God or nature or what have you have for whatever reason saw fit to saddle us ladies with only (and spoiler alert it sucks). But anyway that is neither here or there. How cool! I learned how to play the recorder (wind instrument related to the Italian piccolo) starting in the 4th grade. Then I got graduated to the Xylophone in... I think 5th grade? 6th, 7th, and 8th grade was all about the acoustic guitar but did learn basics about how to "operate" drum sticks. We practiced on our tables first- hence why the music room was in the school basemeny- haha. I was decent on the recorder. The Xylophone I hesitate to call myself decent. The acoustic guitar I was terrible. Oh and we learned the musical scales (some singing though admittedly again I was not good or even decent) and how to read music (obviously). My Aunt and Dad could sing. Never took a lesson in their lives. My Mom took piano lessons up to age 13. My sister took some clarinet and some dancing lessons. (My sister claims to be a terrible dancer but she has GREAT rythym. Me? Meh. I would love to take swing and ballroom one day. I love Swing/ Big Band. My Dad's Mom was one heck of a dancer. She taught me some moves as a way to help make cleaning fun. Spoiler alert: It worked.) Oh, and I taught myself how to play "Silent Night" and "Jingle Bells" on a keyboard I got one Christmas but no longer have. (I donated A LOT of my old toys and some other stuff over the years and then during a cross country move a lot of other stuff was lost- not by us I should add.) I will give a listen to your playlist absolutely! Even though it might not be to my particular musical tastes I still give all music a fair listen. This is so absolutely cool Brad! Seriously! @@sammy_the_uncool2702 I love that you started off with the recorder. I have vivid memories of other students carrying around their recorders and being very jealous. I don't understand why I was never presented with the choice to play one, for I almost certainly would have. Perhaps it was because I was already playing the saxophone? I really regret that my folks didn't have a piano in the house. That was such a missed opportunity given my musical interests. If they had, I would have actually been a skilled keyboardist when I finally got around to buying that fancy synthesizer in 8th grade. Instead I was starting from scratch, learning the instrument essentially by learning the songs of my favorite bands, which wasn't bad, but it was a backwards way to come at the instrument. My other challenge is that my rhythm isn't fantastic, and playing lead keyboards to a metronome, in our case a drum machine, requires really sharp rhythm. As I work my way through the back catalog of Seph's videos, there are a lot of live Depeche Mode performances in which they show Alan playing fast lead synth lines with laser precision. Alan's a classically trained musician on piano, the only one in the band with such training, and it shows. The dude has incredible rhythm. He makes playing those parts look easy. And I can tell you from experience, they're not! I also love that you mentioned xylophone. That instrument fascinates me. And It's super cool that it's typically played by percussionists. I'm sure it's difficult to play. So much hand-eye coordination to get those mallets on to the right bars all while reading the music as the same time. Not to mention those that can play a double fisted, double mallet! I sang backing vocals in the band when we performed live, but as you'll find out, they weren't particularly melodic. Lots of shouty vocals. It's just the nature of industrial rock! I love to sing, but my abilities are very limited. But what I do have is a good ear to hear when I'm not hitting the note, so I can continuously try to correct. One of my favorite parts of Seph's reactions is when he sings. I'm amazed how upon hearing a song for the first time he can instantly pick up on the vocal or instrumental melodies and sing them back perfectly. He loves to joke that he can't sing saying, "I bring out the dogs," but the reality is that he's usually spot on! Seph has an amazing sense of pitch, and it's no doubt why he's able to zoom in on finer vocal elements, including complex harmonies, and describe their aesthetic qualities so astutely. He likes to speed his vocal performances up, which has it's charm, I imagine out of self-consciousness, but it's entirely unnecessary. I could listen to him sing all day. I too really love to dance. In my dancing days I used to love to go to the clubs and totally bliss out on the middle of the dancefloor to the hypotonic beats. Chicago underground deep house was a big favorite. In high school I bought a pair of DJ turntables and a mixer and made hot mix tapes from my massive collection of 12" singles. I made copies and distributed them to friends and we listened to them while driving around the town. They were so popular that they would complain that their friends stole their copy my mix tape! I took that as the ultimate compliment. I continued DJing and making hot mix tapes throughout college. I got a lucky break my freshman year and hooked up with an upper classman who belonged to a fraternity and was a member of the Asian American community. I'm telling you the Asian American Association (AAA) threw the biggest and best dance parties on campus and they loved the same music that I did! As such, I got to DJ the AAA dance parties throughout my college career and a few frat parties, but those were an entirely different beast! Think scenes from REVENGE OF THE NERDS. The other year I digitized most of my old DJ hot mix tapes and posted them on Mixcloud. It was so much fun to revisit them so many years later. Seph's recent Madonna reactions again reminded me of those hot mixes, for I made them at the peak of her career and hence she is all over them. His best known compositions were "Lonesome Town", "The Wonder of You", and "Don't the Girls All Get Prettier at Closing Time". His songs have been recorded by Ricky Nelson, Paul McCartney, Dean Martin, The Cramps, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Mickey Gilley, Sammy Davis Jr. and Jerry Lee Lewis. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama,[1] to Thomas Baker Knight Sr. and his wife Mary (Obear) Knight. His father died in 1939 at the age of 32,[2] and because of his mother's poor health Knight was raised mainly by relatives. He learned to play guitar while serving in the Air Force, and after his discharge entered the University of Alabama, where he wrote music in his spare time. In 1956 he founded a rockabilly group, Baker Knight and the Knightmares, with Shuler Brown (bass), A.D. Derby (keyboards), Bill Weinstein (drums), Glenn Lane (sax), and Nat Tortorici (sax).[1] Their debut single, "Bop Boogie to the Blues", was released on Kit Records that year.
