I have a lot of sympathy/empathy for Katherine in this season. She was in an abusive marriage, lost her biological child & didn’t have time to properly mourn because she was trying to get away from abusive ex, married again just be cheated on & divorced, her child is no longer at home, & a business partner who is taking all the credit. She has been putting up an image for years. I think she was going to crack eventually, even if it wasn’t Mike.

For me, killing off Edie was the spark that started the downhill slope of the show. I think that's partly why Katherine was sacrificed because she filled the role in the Susan/Mike relationship previously filled by Edie.

I personally think that Gaby's strictness with Ana was due to Gaby seeing so much of herself in Ana as a teenager, and she just wants to keep her safe from the dangers that come with being young and beautiful. I also think that Gaby follows a mindset of "My house, my rules" when it came to her and her actual daughters, and Ana was only like 16-17 when she moved in, and I personally think that it's not completely late to discipline someone like Ana, and in the end it did pay off and she became more mature.

This is the season when I started really disliking Susan. Mike was about to go to Vegas with Katherine and marry her. He left her at the airport essentially on their wedding day and a few months later married his ex instead, but somehow - in Susan's - eyes SHE is the bad guy? She has the audacity to be annoyed with people being sympathtic towards Katherine instead of celebrating her happiness. And then we see how little she knew about Julie's life and how sel-centered she in fact was. In my eyes, Susan is the worst out of the main characters of the show.

i agree on the most part, but about Lynnette and Gabi's parenting, i have to disagree, it's conflicting to raise children, and challenging, you can love them, but also resent them for what you had to give up for them, but honestly you can just love them despite everything. just a pov of a single person with no children.

Katherine’s storyline is clearly what they were planning on doing with Susan then they basically just swapped their places in the writing room after the negative fan reaction. I wouldn’t have liked it if Susan acted like that, *but* it would have been more in character for her than for Katherine. Not only that, they (writers) probably would have handled it with more grace and tact had this been Susan’s storyline as to not make her too unlikeable, but as Katherine wasn’t really a fan favorite they probably felt okay with their totally heavy handed depiction of such a sensitive topic. I remember reading back in the day about “it’ll be the funniest break down you’ll ever see” even when I was 16 at the time and thinking “what exactly about a mental breakdown is funny?”

gaby is my best character. I like her courage, her strength and her honesty. I'd rather see a person tell me they're selfish, but then surprise me with their courage and loyalty, than play some kind of sweet person. Gaby carries a lot of compassion and love inside her that she doesn't even know about.

I feel like Katherine was the worst wasted potential on the show. They really just violated her character, because she was my favourite in Season 4 because of how brave, mysterious and badass she was and how she never took no fo an answer, I always loved when she was on screen because she kept things intresting and she had such a strong backstory as well which could had been used more in later seasons. In season 5 it was like watching if Katherine had a twin sister with vastly different personalities. I really don't know why the show just fumbled the bag on her character because she had the potential of getting even better on the show and literally could had been one of the most iconic characters in television history. It's a shame

To defend Gaby just a bit...I'm a mom and time away from my kids made me feel guilty at first because moms are regarded as having their parental role be 24/7 for life. But I learned that time away from my kids let me decompress, reunite with who I am and who I want to be, that I love myself as much as I love my children. And honestly being tied to your children is not healthy for them or parents. 💜

I remember watching season 6 as a literal child of ten, and even baby me went 'this is so weird' on the Katherine - Susan - Mike triangle. If a ten-year-old can spot the character assassination, then the writing must well and truly stink something fierce. And then they swept it under the rug like what Katherine went through doesn't warrant months if not years' worth of emotional damage to work through.

The Lynette pregnancy storyline reminds me a lot of Crazy Ex Girlfriend, only the latter show handled it better. One of the main characters, Paula, is an older woman in her 40s like Lynette, and she has two teen sons. In season 2 of the show Paula is finally trying to follow her dreams of being a lawyer, she applies to law school and gets in, but she ends up getting pregnant. At first she thinks that she's just gonna have to deal with the pregnancy and let go of her desires, because she feels like married women with children don't get abortions. However, her husband is very supportive of her and her decision to not keep the baby, and wants her to pursue her dreams fully. I thought the whole thing was handled beautifully, and I wish Lynette could've had the same understanding and support from Tom.

Susan is the worst. I have never been a fan of Terri Hatcher and she made a fool of herself on the show. She overacts and tries to look cute. She is a selfish spoiled brat who never put children first. There are not many men who would have anything to do with her yet on the show she always has guys waiting in the wings. She isn’t attractive enough to keep acting like a cute 25 year old.

You're so right about the character assassination, previously with Orson and now with Katherine. Also abortion is a huge taboo on this show, they had so many opportunities to bring it up but they willingly chose to never present it as an option (looks like someone had an agenda 🙄). I was waiting for you to conclude on the mystery strangler though, I wanted to hear your thoughts on his highlight episode and overall character.

I can’t believe how many people are upset that the show didn’t run with abortions as a plot. Having an abortion is not something you want to brag about. Getting pregnant and giving birth is a privilege that is being abused. If you don’t want to get pregnant then prevent it from happening. We are so soulless now that women are proud of their abortions. I watched DH when it first aired and have been rewatching it lately. Abortion is not something that ever crossed my mind with the show. I guess with the current target audience it’s important for women to have abortions. It’s almost like having an abortion is proper birth control. I guess I’m in the wrong because I value innocent defenseless babies. I’m glad that my kids are almost grown and understand how not to get pregnant.

I got my hopes wayy too high up with Katherine and Robin because as soon as they started implying there was something romantic between the two of them I thought they would canonise the first openly bisexual character in the main cast. Instead they presented the gay/straight dichotomy as the only options and had that one episode where Mike had a crisis of masculinity because he was the last guy Katherine dated and thought he made love in a way that was too "girly" or something ughh. At the end of the day it was a show that was made in the 2000s, so....

I think the idea is Katherine has always been someone who is clingy and craves companionship. In season 4 after she divorces her then husband Adam, she tries to reconcile with him even though she was the one who justifiably divorced him for cheating on her, which he rejected. I think the five year gap of being alone in the house with her daughter having gone off to college must have really made her desperate for companionship, so when she started a relationship with Mike she couldn't let him go.

I don’t think it’s fair to criticise gabby for sometimes wanting a break from her kids or for feeling frustrated with them. That’s actually normal. Literally every mother I know, including my own, has felt like that especially when the kids are still quite young. It is entirely possible to love your kids and also be overwhelmed and annoyed with them about the life you can no longer live because they’re here. That doesn’t make you a bad mum.

Yes, there are ways of doing that in a mature way, however. I've always despised Carlos for how he treated Lynette because of her pregnancy. I don't know the rules in USA but here in Czech Republic you have NO obligation to tell ANYONE at work about your pregnancy until the maternity leave, which is like 6 weeks before the full term or so. Of course most people announce it sooner and past certain point it's usually kinda obvious anyway, but Lynette was like what, 4-5 monts ? That still leaves about another 4 months to figure out her replacement etc, isn't usual quitting time in USA 2 weeks and bye? I hated this storyline so much

The issue was that Lynette LIED to Carlos AND her new position was very important in the company. The pregnancy WOULD have, without a doubt, affected her decision making & WOULD’ve put the company, and Carlos’ job, in jeopardy. Carlos did nothing wrong, it was all Lynette. She should’ve been truthful from the start.

I really loved the mother son relationship between Angie Bolen and Danny Bolen. I really connected to their relationship more than Susan and Julie! Their scenes together really stood for me. Speaking of Susan I’m glad Angie went mama bear New Yorker on her after what she tried to do to her son. During season 6 I was secretly hoping that Dylan Mayfair and Danny Bolen would have hit it off. I believe they both would not only have chemistry but relate to each other the most as far as being in a family with a lot of secrets. BUT due to the five year jump in between seasons it probably wouldn’t be appropriate. I felt so terrible for Danny when he attempted suicide after being rejected by Julie for the last time. I’m was sitting there thinking WTF Danny Bolen is not Zach Young. He’s not going to hurt you the way Zach did or Austin for that matter. It was totally gross that she slept with his dad. Even though I didn’t like him and Ana together it gave us viewers the chance to see Gabby involved with the Bolen mystery and help rescue Angie and her son from Patrick Logan. The Bolen will be missed. 😢

I think Katherine's spiral was kind of realistic to how an obsessive limerence actually happens. Especially because she does have so much trauma in her past with an abusive ex. When you come from abuse and you meet someone you feel safe and happy around and you've been so lonely (Dillon and Adam are gone, she's undervalued at work, her best-friend is kind of self-centered, etc) you refuse to believe that the life you had planned in your head changed so drastically overnight. You're still consumed by your love and need for someone that you refuse to believe they moved on completely or that there's no way they wouldn't ever come back once they realize they made a mistake. I kind of went through the same thing and looking back there were signs the whole time that things were off but when he left for someone else he'd been seeing the last few months all I could think about was either stealing him back or getting revenge kinda back and forth between the two. Especially because he was kinda evil about the breakup. So I kinda feel for her but do think her descent from strong woman to mad woman was realistic especially when you've been forcing yourself to be strong for a long time.

I think Mike really mistreated her, not admitting that he still had feelings for his ex, using her for comfort, sex and domestic life services such as cooking, and babysitting. She was doing everything for him, even putting up with his ex living across the street... Katherine was a victim, and Susan and Mike should have sincerely apologized.

As a gay kid who grew up with this show I loved that Bob and Lee became regulars and just a normal part of the neighbourhood, especially as a contrast to Andrew who's more edgy - having all 3 was a great way of showing the spectrum of gay men, which was commendable for 2010-ish. They remind me a lot of Cam and Mitchell from Modern Family, which came out around this time, though I think Modern Family executed it much better since they had more screentime. As DH progressed though I did start rolling my eyes about how Lee (the campier gay) wasn't given a single scene where he wasn't pointing out what a gay stereotype he was - a classic thing that straight/white/cis writers do, putting offensive jokes in the mouth of someone in the offended community so they don't seem offensive. Lee did get his own brief subplot as a realter in S7 but the rest of the time he was just "the gay friend", whereas Bob got to be the lawyer. Also the way they applauded Bob for not being a gay stereotype was very icky to me - borderline homophobic. The idea that "gay men don't need to be feminine" is quite a toxic one - I was bullied in high school for that exact reason. Shows like DH and others that came out around this time like Happy Endings got into this habit of casting straight- or straight-acting actors for gay characters in a way that was weirdly disparaging to the more feminine ones. And these sorts of casting/writing choices go all the way to Love Simon (which I absolutely hate - it should be called Love Internalised Homophobe). ANYWAY that's my rant about gay cis male representation in DH. It's still a hell of a lot better than the representation of any other queer/trans people on this show. Oh, 2010...

A little too late to the discussion, I just finished season 6. I also liked that Bob and Lee being a gay couple was their whole storyline, they were just neighbors who happened to be gay. I was a bit disappointed that they never showed any gay characters doing the deed, especially when Andrew hooked up with one of Bree's employees in S6, something that would have been shown had it been two straight people. I'm glad Katherine and her gf's intimacy was shown a bit but we all know why that is ( to appeal to straight men who think lesbians hooking up is hot), but it just drove home the point that male-male intimacy is too taboo 🙄🙄.

I just started this show for the first time last week and it went by quickly until season 6. I just finished the season. That was slow and dreadful. Still not over how Gabby gets away with statuatory rape but god forbid how many times they bring up Austin running over Carlos's mother (which nobody else heard or saw, it was entirely word of mouth) as blackmail for Bree's literal career. Should I even bother finishing this show? Anyways, I highly recommend Nip/Tuck for anyone into soap operas or heavy drama like DH. it's on Hulu and aired on FX around the same time as DH and actually goes more in depth of the same themes. Ryan Murphy does not hold back or allow for conservative writers to take control.

i think mark cherry or the producers skipped over the abortion with lynette because of the "maybe audience outcry" or cancellation? many of the american audiences are maybe conservatives against abortion so they didn't want to poke the sleeping bear and have bad reviews.

I’m a mother of four and was happy getting pregnant and not choosing to kill off my babies. It’s too bad that women today are proud of their abortions and use them as birth control. I suffered several miscarriages with one of them being in my 2nd trimester. Those were tough losses. The 2nd trimester miscarriage was a tiny baby boy. It broke my heart. But people like you would abort that tiny life and be happy about it. I’m really glad that the show didn’t use abortions in the plots. My youngest has hypotonic cerebral palsy and he is now 17 years old. He will always need me and my husband. But I love my children and have never been away from them. Believe it or not but women are generally maternal or they used to be.

At end of series 6, a character actually was brought back from the inaugural season. Checked out of the show! (IMHO, series *5* is my most favourite season, with *6* a solid second; could not care less about the final two; first four - which took place five to nine years before "fifth year" - would fall in between)

A "funny" breakdown?!The thing abt Susan not knowing all this stuff abt her daughter is probably bc of her parenting. Like I get the impression Susan was a bit like the "best friend" parent reminds me a bit of Loralai from Gilmore Girls where they are then like "Oh my God, she is such a good kid normally" not to be like a Dictator Parent but maybe also be a Parent. And yeah Cathrine kinds went crazy but also Mike was a bit harsh. Maybe Cathrine was a bit unstable all along, that explains her personality changes maybe someone should've into her mental health. And yeah ppl's reaction to the Wedding was quite realistic. Like yeah he was just with another woman now he's getting married to you?? Obviously Susan was right in locking her bc she literally crashed the Wedding xD. Yes she was valid that she wanted a apology and all that, but she could've gone abt it differently. Honestly they all acted badly. And the whole thing abt her needing this Man bc she's can't deal with being alone is also this quite misogynistic way where woman are made out to be not good for anything else than motherhood and having a Man and all that. Bc we can't be happy without a Man. I commented this before but the whole pregnancy thing with Lynette was SO bad. I think a lot of older shows have a lot of Issues with mysongenie and sexualization with the whole Lynette's boobs thing for example. The Gabby and Ana thing: Yeah at this point you can't "raise her out of certain behaviors" also isn't she Carlose's niece. Technically it's him that would MAYBE have the right to tell her off but she's not your kid. As I've already commented once, I'm in a wheelchair and the thing with wheelchair story's that also bothers me, is that shows never seem to use actual wheelchair users in shows. Nothing specific for the show, this just always reminds me of that. And all the continous comments abt weights is so weird

So it’s important to include abortion in today’s tv shows. Abortions are not something you should be proud of. I gave birth to 4 children naturally and I’m proud of that. If a woman wants to make the decision of what to do with her body then she should prevent pregnancy. I get pregnant easily and after my youngest was born I used birth control. It’s extremely basic.
