For three decades, the Lions Gate Trio has recorded important trio repertoire, from classical to contemporary. We will now be releasing for our listeners on this KZbin Channel recordings and videos.
This week, the Lions Gate Trio will be publishing our world premiere recordings of Sergei Protopopov's transcriptions for trio of two of his Préludes (1915-1916).
Sergei Protopopov (1893-1954) was a Russian composer, conductor and theorist in the early 20th century. Born in Moscow, Protopopov studied composition at the Kiev Conservatory, andlater taught at the Moscow Conservatory (1938-1943). Protopopov's oeuvre includes an opera, an orchestral suite based on folk pieces, works for cello and piano, solo piano pieces, and many Songs. Because the Soviet government found avant-garde artistic expression unacceptable, promoting instead music that reflected 'socialist realism', Protopopov's music was mostly unknown after 1931.
In both his compositions and his teaching, Protopopov incorporated Yavorksy's theories about modal rhythms and tritones. His writing for piano, which is highly virtuosic, reflects the influence of Scriabin and is often written on three staves.
