My constructive criticism: I feel like this is aesthetically pleasing but I really don't think there's room for the beardie to actually roam unless you lose some of those plants. I feel like he's just going to end up walking all over the plants and trampling them. Tbh I think you should've utilized for a more spacious build -- especially since it's not exactly a naturalistic setup (those plants you put in + leaf litter). It seems more cramped especially with the size of the animal versus the volume of the tank. And even though it's your vision -- which has always been great! I feel like the water bowl isn't in a great place. The beardie has one other way to get up besides walking through the water dish so that means you've got a choke point were the beardie will walk through the water dish constantly which will lead to more frequent water changes, not to mention the gradual loss of substrate. This is beautiful by all means and I really love what you did, but I figure I'd give you a bit of my constructive criticism :)

Mint still needs more water than you should have in a beardy habitat. You need to keep the humidity down or the little guy can get respiratory issues. That's why many beardy setups don't include a water bowl either. You can spritz them with a water bottle so they can lick the water off instead.

High humidity does not cause respiratory infections. Actually, too low humidity can cause RIs (too low is of course dependant on the species). A water bowl should definitely be included.

i tried making a bioactive leopard gecko tank once, and it was actually very difficult to maintain - i dont recommend it if you use heat lamps as opposed to heat mats, itll cook your plants :(

@@chrysalies8152 Heat mats should never be used with bioactives or any enclosures with substrate, it completely defeats the purpose. Heat mats are terrible primary heat sources anyway since animals instinctively burrow to escape the heat, not to access it. Plus they emit only IR-C waves which are useless for reptiles and don't even penetrate their skin, overheat heat provided by a halogen floodlight (or a deep heat projector of halogens are illegal in your state) is the only way to go since they provide IR-A and IR-B waves that penetrate their skin into their core and muscles and activate all of the mitochondria in their cells, which is especially important for them and their metabolism since reptiles have fewer mitochondriaper cell than mammals do. Besides, the only way I could see the halogen light cooking the plants is if the enclosure is too small. A single leopard gecko requires at least a 36x18x18 inch enclosure, since anything smaller is way too difficult to maintain a proper heat and humidity gradient in. Arid bioactives really aren't difficult at all tbh, they're really get problematic for bearded dragons bc they tend to trample, eat, and otherwise destroy all their plants lol. I have bioactive enclosures for my super tropical jungle Indonesian blue tongue skinks who have basking spot surface temps of 120°F and the plants are thriving.

Oh yeah, they're fine for putting on the side of the enclosure, but a CHE or deep heat projector would be better since heat mats really only feel warm while you touch them. I was just saying that they're not good primary heat sources since they can't be used with any amount of loose substrate and don't even provide the correct wavelengths of heat that reptiles and amphibians need like halogen bulbs do.

Awesome!! This is amazing! I've been keeping powder orange and powder blue isopods for about 17 months now and they've done extremely well. I ended up mixing them together in one container out of pure curiosity and they totally blended together. There's such a huge range of colours now. Purples, oranges, reds, browns, blues, indigo... it's amazing! I also keep springtails and I'm hoping one day to build an entire bioactive encloser that sustains edible foods. Maybe a bush of kale or some green onions, a cherry tomatoes bush, a blue berry bush or a small jalapeño pepper plant. So many options lol. But either way I'm still studying and learning how to encorporate the two together. For some reason when I introduce the springtails I have in with the isopods they don't seem to last long... I've looked around and they don't seem to be in there. I don't know if it's becuase they are not the correct type of springtails or if I'm just not doing somthing I should be doing 🤔

i like that you focued on making every inch of the tank useable and also fit the aesthetic. i sometimes see tanks that sacrifice floor space but you did a great job using the overhang / stair step to leave the floor of the tank relatively open. and having the second layer be so wide is really cool so the lizard can spread out and bask comfortably. awesome job!

I see many bearded dragon setups on youtube and otherwise and they are always so sparse and dead, but even though this enclosure is for a desert animal it looks alive and livable. Great job. I'm working on my terrarium skills so i might have a home for my animals that looks and is as functional as yours.

Be careful with mint. Their roots can travel far underground and take over the entire area (if sown in gardens they can suffocate and overtake entire backyards and neighbouring yards too). Most gardeners leave mint in a pot because of this problem.

I did the same exact thing, but the one tip that I would like to point out is to get that down under look with doing what he’s doing plus using tinted grout and painting it on it will give it that land down under them and make your bearded dragon be able to make itself easier

I LOVE THIS BUILD!!!! I think if you were to try and remake something similar this for your further beardy I would make a few adjustments. I would cut back on the sand. Although sand is found in their natural habitat the sand is not in large piles. Sand is also known to give beardies impaction. I would also add backgrounds to all three sides of the tank. Seeing they’re reflection makes them think there is another beardy there and it stresses them out. I wish you the best of luck in your future builders ☺️

It looks cool, but personally I just feel it's a bit small, and the beardie would sadly probably need an upgrade out of it, since the bare minimum for an adult beardies is 4x2x2ft which is about 120 gallons, but even then I've seen plenty of people start suggesting 5x2/3x3ft or even at least 6ft long enclosures for some adult beardies, imo, it probably would have been nice, if the tank could be used for quite a while, but that's my opinion, I've just seen people suggest point 6+ month old beardies in their adult enclosures, to save money and resources, but the nice thing is going bioactive isn't incredibly difficult as you don't need plants (some beardies can be big plant eaters haha), so being able to just have the clean-up crew and just give them some food additions, is definitely worth it imo. As having a beardie even just in a 4x2x2ft enclosure can get quite pricey, since beardies can require at least 6 inches if not ideally 8+ inches of depth to their substrate, which can definitely get expensive when changing out the substrate, if using an adequate mix, since for example excavator clay can be good for the large extensive burrows beardies are capable of, but it can e quite a pricey thing to buy. This is just my views on this, plus ofc the old beardie enclosure had reptile carpet or a sand mat as the bedding, basically both of those aren't adequate for a beardie or really any reptiles, since they can be quite risky, to name some things, reptile carpet can tear out nails ad teeth, sand mats have rocks etc on them which can easily fall off and be ingested and potentially cause impaction or internal injuries, as well as both are basically impossible to clean properly and need to be swapped out every time they go to the bathroom in a similar fashion to paper towels, but they are more expensive and if they aren't swapped out can become big bacteria breeding grounds which can start to take effect on their health, your own or easily cause infection on any sort of open wound which can be caused by a nail or tooth being ripped out by the carpet. And idk what they were, but I doubt the pellets in the dish are very good, beardies should have a variety of fresh healthy vegetables on their plant side of their diet, and a healthy variety of gut loaded bugs on their bug/meat side of their diet. Staple bugs being like Dubia roaches, Turkistan roaches, Wood roaches, Discoid roaches, Crickets, Locusts, Grasshoppers, Silk worms, Bsfl aka Black Soldier Fly Larvae (Calci worms or Phoenix worms). As well as horn worms and mealworms are now and the treats, plus wax worms and super worms are rare treats, because of how fatty and addictive they are. Butter worms and Super mealworms are bugs to avoid, I believe all these bits on bugs are similar if not the same when it comes to what is staple, treats and avoid for any insectivore or omnivore that eats bugs. 🤷‍♀️ Just thought I'd throw in the thing about the bugs in case it could potentially help anyone.

@@thetechimals1966 Dude what kind of thing to say is that, it's a living thing just as much as a human child is, taking care of an animal is just adopting a child into your care that happens to not be human. It depends upon you for every single individual aspect of its existence, it's our responsibility as their provider to give them the absolute best care we can, and that includes providing the best food, proper humidity and moisture, the proper substrate for burrowing, proper UVB radiation based on its Ferguson zone, overhead halogen lighting to provide IR-A and IR-B waves to fully power their muscles and metabolism, and a large enriching enclosure that's big enough to warrant it can't just be on one side and take 4 steps and be on the other side. Keeping a pet isn't a right, it's a luxury, and it's our responsibility to make sure they're able to engage in all of their natural behaviors as they would in the wild and ensure that they remain as healthy as possible so they can live a long and happy life, whether it be a dog, a fish, a bird, a reptile, or even an insect.

I am curious how this will hold up to the bearded dragon's claws. I have seen other videos where the bearded dragon has completely scratched the acrylic doors on it's enclosure that it looks like frosted glass.

Without being roud, this is the first setup I do not like. I think it's to small for the animal. There should be more free space at the bottom. There must be cover too, but in a setup like this there should be at least the same space free of obsticals. The overhang makes it to dark in my opinion. Once again, I do not want to be mean, I'm just giving my honest opinion.

Land down under feel indeed. I went for a bush walk just outside of Sydney last weekend and saw a little rock cliff, and this could have been cut and pasted from that scene. Bloody, WOW!! Edit: except the plants. The rockscape is perfect. The plants... nice.

What a little cutie Felix is! Nice rebuild of the old tank. Not so keen on that fine red exoterra dust (if its exoterra) and while it looks the part it causes issue for some beardies (irritated eyes etc). The (Beardie) love of my life passed away from a liver cancer 30th march or he would have been getting a remodelling. I still have his tank and cabinet but I cant even think about anything to do with another dragon or changing his house. Too soon..... really admire your work though. Maybe one day...
