For engineering: I say rewards vets to know their ship layouts to physically go to componets, beam it or button press like Helldivers for 10 sec, then run to other components... so the game rewards familiarity with the ship layouts.

Yes! Planetside 2 (FREE) has some cool tech like 1000+ players on same map, and combined arm battles with 96vs96 even 200 players in the same map hex, 3 factions etc. Good voice comms channels in game. Map that lets players draw overlays on it. Worthwhile video to compare and contrast with other Sci-fi games.

Just doing a comparison is underselling how ahead of the curve that game was technology wise. Which is going to make the deconstruction process that much more depressing, with how many missed opportunities that game presented; and ultimately failed because it could not find an optimal time or method to see the success it should have had. The game engine, Forgelight, in 2013 was a serious contender to DICE's Frostbite engine; having 85% of the feature set and graphics capability out of the box... including terrain deformation, basic destruction, PG terrain creation and rendering, day/night cycle, dynamic lighting (as in flashlights worked), and working physics simulation. But built from the bottom up to support 100s of players and 1000s of entities with an MMO backend. They were going to use this for Everquest Next. And one of their highly touted features was voxel support for terrain deformation, so you could mine and tunnel under the ProcGen maps. But what was most shocking is that everything, except voxel mining, was verifiably functional (but unpolished) in engine during the early public facing builds of PS2 Tech Test (essentially late Alpha, pre-Beta). However, things got rapidly shaved or disabled going into, and through out most of Beta, as they were rushing to get performance under control to hit a release deadline. The community unanimously agreed it needed another 3-6 months just to hammer out issues with the already stripped down game play, but SOE pushed to formal launch anyway. My estimates suggest this set the game back around 6 months of Dev time for every year during LIVE, because you can't make sweeping changes and thoroughly test them when you have an active microtransaction model you're trying to prop up. And it shows, as they've had to revamp the business model at least twice, and the way the game handled Smedly Bucks (nicked named after John Smedly [may his soul rot in every layer of hell simultaneously]) kept messing with how the game's unlock system was managed. PS2 had the potential to tap into a sizable chunk of the BF player base, as it was taking that basic gunplay and combined arms/vehicle model, and placing it on top of a Persistent war zone, with a player cap per map that no other game at the time could even come close to. But over time, all the things that made it unique got whittled away to try and chase trends, break into eSports, and slowly downgraded to keep performance up. Its a straight up tragedy that internal design conflict, half implemented updates, loss of dev talent, and a series of failed secondary game launches, forced PS2 to carry the studio as its most significant revenue stream, but never getting business model right.

With master modes I feel like it would be better to reduce effective range of smaller guns and balance shield regeneration so it would require you to stay closer to what you fight for fight to not last forever by only taking down shield and getting back to regenerated one. It would allow hit and run tactics of smaller ships to work fine as support for battles between larger ships. It would also make you choose to stay closer, fly slower relatively to your opponents instead of going with "it just works like that, there are no other ways of combat".

A funny thing, CIG could easily make a Starfield like scenario with loadingscreens to finish the game, but you know, Chris Roberts isn't one of those phony Todd Howard kinds hyping their game and at release you see that the game is literally not close to what was promised, even worse..... That is the bad part of developing behind closed doors, where CIG is showing and telling where we will not get surprised when the game releases, because we will know what we are getting by then. That is the future of game development which Xbox, Sony, Epic, Tencent, EA, CDPR etc should consider, or you will get games like Cyberpunk 2077, Redfall, Starfield, Mortals of Avieum, Suicide Squad etc that is just horrible at release, simply due to bad ideas being developed upon on where developers have lost touch with their audience. It has been really bad the last 7 years imho, but CIG is a light in that tunnel so to speak.

One aspect not considered/mentioned during the Master Modes discussion is the reality of the physics simulation struggling unsuccessfully to keep up with the very high speeds of combat which is the main reason why a solo light fighter can currently dominate a heavy gunship or frigate. They're effectively using multiple exploits in the current flight model to dominate which MUST be addressed. Slowing the speeds down and removing the 2 specific movement exploits those combat pilots are taking advantage of is necessary and seems effective to level the playing field. I would argue it will take MORE skill & coordination for combat pilots to excel & dominate once Master Modes is in the PU... and that's a VERY good thing.

I saw you two were on discord doing this. I've been really excited for this to come out! Added note about Master modes: avenger one is abdicating for a less severe swing in ship speeds, going to 500 m/s as opposed to 200 to allow for a higher skill ceiling than the current master modes speeds.

I believe that once MM is implemented they will end up increasing the speeds as A1 advocates for along with a few other tweaks like projectile speed and spread. It honestly feels pretty good (coming from an average PVP pilot) but disengaging is nearly impossible. It needs help for sure. But I doubt they’re not changing it before release

@freelancerthe2561
@freelancerthe2561 Ай бұрын
@@GG-qx5vg They're trying to keep engagement ranges down, because bad pilots have a extremely low "time on target" between jousting and running. If you look at the problem from the perspective of an Arena Shooter vs a Tactical shooter, you start to see the issues more clearly. Movement is king, so moving fast to exploit weak aiming is the best strategy at all times. But CIG over compensated hard, because its essentially moving to same kind of space combat Starfield has. And the changes to gimbals is what makes it really obvious that they're prioritizing accessibility over skill development. If it were me, I would had solidly taken the stance that ship variety should be the solution to accessibility. That certain ships be designed around certain types of fighting styles, and balance them through equipment capacity and handling speed. So Blocky ships have better and uniform rotational speeds, but terrible atmo handling and over-reliance on thrust power. Wing and Spear shaped ships stronger pitch and roll, improved atmo handling, and weak retro. Industrial ships with strong forward and retro power, but weak or unstable rotational rates, offset with more tanky shields. This is better than the current role based system they're pursing, because you can still express a role via different flight styles, but the natural tendencies for specific ships aligning both in a given niche won't be seen as a problem.

Regarding features that appear to have been "shelved," it could be that they are feature complete and awaiting final integration due to some blocking prerequisites, so there's nothing to do yet... Bounty Hunting v2 could be waiting for the ships to be updated to support the gameplay. The economy work now in progress could be inputting, testing, and adjusting the parameter values driving the quantum dynamic economy, which may also be feature complete and awaiting that balance testing before final integration.

Remember, the turrets were to test for S42. They can serve a purpose in the PU eventually, but clearly have not been revisited since implementation. Also, the Distribution Centers were supposed to be UGF, but evolved into something else. The turrets were probably going to be used in the new UGF’s that are now Distribution Centers. Also there has been a lot of shifting in resources so it isn’t far fetched that something gets made and added to the PU, and then the main feature they were tied to gets pushed back for some reason or another. I think CIG is hiding behind the excuse of Server Meshing (and rightfully so, as it is very important to get your foundation solid before committing to anything that can make the game “run out of space”. They have said it will unlock so much in Star Citizen. So once it is in, no more excuses and I think we will see CIG start tying up loose ends and tying other untied ends together. It won’t be an overnight thing but CIG knows they can’t hide behind that big excuse anymore which means a fire might be lit underneath them to get the game to Beta.

There's definitely a lot of stuff in Squadron 42 that never needed to be placed in the PU for testing. IMO Engineering should be fairly complex to keep the engineers engaged but there should be an option to hire an npc that does the job at something like 50% efficiency. Same for other roles on a ship.
@Trollzey
@Trollzey Ай бұрын
Following up on what Morph said with engineering the difficulty and engagement will come to those who are trying to min max a specific ship or loadout for a ship/ mission. Going into to different scenarios may require different shields and weapon combinations and the top engineer is going to work on making sure that ship is tuned to perfection and power management is maximized for the job. The advanced player may be looking to leverage "preset" combinations and basic tunings where the entry to engineering could just be pressing the buttons for startup sequencing.
@JakoMacro
@JakoMacro Ай бұрын
Yes they touched on this aspect but morph was predominantly talking about mid combat engineering before Tomato reminded him that engineering is more than a combat role. As for combat engineering, I think it should be as complex as the engineer wants it to be. New engineers may just want to run around and click a single button at a single place in a ship, whereas a veteran combat engineer should be allowed to strut their stride and be able to multitask repairs with “buffing” the ship by redirecting fluid pipes, power conduits or gas flows to maximize ship capabilities. It is the complexity that allows room for profession. The dumber engineering is, the more it will become “you drew the short straw, you’re stuck on engineering duty” instead of people being excited and willing to be hired onto ships for their expertise.

The only other company developing server technologies/fine tuning is Nova Quark with their game Dual Universe, and they have their version of SOCS and server meshing that acrually work right now, and to top it off using their inhouse voxel engine to make their scifi game very unique, which is also Chris Roberts second wettest dream for the future of games. Maybe we will see a 100% voxel based game in Starcitizen 2? :) Only future will tell! Always nice to see exciting new development that other gaming industry giants have not done, or don't want to do or develop, due to how expensive it can be, but the biggest obstacle imho are the publishers wanting revenue than actually create new stuff. This is obvious if you take a look at games the last 20, or even 30 years. I hope CIG has insane success with SQ42 and Starcitizen, so to branch out and make other games with their Star Engine, which right now is better than any other game engine out there, and yes even better than UE5 since it has huge limitations when it comes to huge open worlds. Making a game look nice is the easiest part, but making a good MMO game with seamless traversel, and a destructable environment, is much harder. Cudos to CIG for taking the time! I'm rambling! Good video Space Tomato! :)

I agree on the a2 it’s so lame, my first ever PVP encounter was on ghost Hollow when a corsair landed, I immediately ran to hide behind cover to ambush him with my p4 when the back door started to open, and a cyclone unexpectedly came out, I knew I was cooked. I made a B line towards a Vanguard harbinger that was old and abandoned with the door open. It was my first time inside of a Vanguard, but I figured it out quick. I took off with it heavily damaged and blew up the cyclone. It was a very fun experience. within 10 minutes. He was back and blew me up with an A2, I saw him come through the clouds and I hid in a building, it didn’t matter because he effectively was able to nuke GH… such a lame disappointing end to a great moment that I could have had in no other game.

For my part, things like engineering and medical gameplay need to have really significant amounts of depth. It is no excuse to say in combat with lots going on just pressing a button will be engaging and complex - this game also needs to work for players who are *not* often in combat. If an engineer wants to get another 5% productivity out of the farms on an endeavor Olympic in "safe" space, they will be disappointed if there is only one button for them to press because engineering was designed solely around combat. CIG can make any game they like, but they do need to also make the game they sold - which for things like medical explicitly included medical being one of the more important professions. Magic ray and press one button once are simply not good enough, when other games have far more depth and CIG pitched so much. Sure they probably should have pitched less, but they must deliver on their promises or face very well grounded refund demands from all the non-combat players. Not everyone will get their dream gameplay, that is certain. But it is a dangerous trap for CIG to balance things like engineering solely around being fun during combat - it's meant to be a full profession, not just an add-on to combat gameplay. Never forget, the Crucible was sold a long, long time ago, and the big expensive ships like that and the Hope are part of why CIG has the money to make this game. They have to deliver the gameplay for them, even if they might not want to. Same as selling capital ships always meant they were going to have a nightmare balancing combat.

Im not an sc player but keeping an eye on it and enjoy you guys talking about the game... one thing im not understanding and you guys only briefly touched on is firstly what is server meshing... and why does sc need such a complicated never before seen meshing... what do other games do and how do they do it and why would that not work for sc... from an outside pov no game devs ever really talk about this it just get done...?

Point 1 - no seams, no loading wait, no rupture. A Gameplay where even transiting a star system to another should offer a gameplay loop. A world where.... I could be wrong so bear with me.... your character persists after you log out but that in itself can mean an ocean of things from 1mn persistence to until you log back in. Star citizen is an extension of wing commander games but also wing commander the movie. So no break in gameplay means realism,that simple. Point 2 - size matter so dev must deal with it. You can find fighters 1, 2, multi seats. But you can find behemoths ships (not in game due to actual server limitations). A simple frigate roughly couple hundred meters long uses few to a short dozens (ship fighters included) of players but the ship itself can hold a lot more should you choose to use your frigate for special objective where ship limitation is its grid for objects hold and space for example you want to jam 500 people in your idris, you should be able to... might space allow 500 players to stack inside. Point 3- space opera or grand nature warfare where everyone objective is a big deal in the grand objective to win a war. Space is vast made of nothing and everything feel small or no big deal until to condense an area. Suddenly size l, speed, weight is felt. Major problems are the dev miseducated the community where your tiny puny ship blows up many folds over sized ship compared to yours just because you are with friends. Physics is what it is, it is natural for newcomers to joust... fight in circle while Chris roberts somewhar wants more WWII plane fighters plan of attacks and avoidance which is why we are on our 3rd flight mode of sorts but this time it's so rethoric in balance that "skill" is chocked to death. So many features are missing and/op need another pass. We in the community are all super excited for server meshing as a whole for we hope it is THE pedestal upon which the feel and limitations or hopefully lack of will emancipate all nature of all subsequent features in game. Example I personally am more than patient for NPC player control or I as a player give orders to npc(s) in my ship. Star citizen is wild but it is hopefully getting somewhere should server meshing gets real

The short version. Each server is responsible for a different area in the verse. The ability to transfer us from server to server seamlessly while we travel. Multiple servers connected together to share the work load in the many areas that may become heavily player populated due to interest. And to mitigate the pains on us, of poor server performance, or server crashes. The goal is to get as many players as possible in one instance to move about freely without loading screens, and optimal server performance and reliability, with full persistence of the environment. CIG's plan for galactic population is 90% NPC, 10% players. It goes into more detail when you start to apply different scenarios to it. So feel free to ask me more questions if needed

When CIG makes master modes it is for 99% of us playing the game and not for the top 1% PVP players. That 1% will find a away to be the top with any system given.

What any Noob needs to rember with CIG is..............talk is cheap and counts for absolutely nothing with this crew, its all about PROMOTIONS/SALES, remember that, and your set. We as backers are not on the same timescale as CIG, one simple remark like ''Base Building in 2024'', and the Noobs turn ito heroin addicts, until cold turkey hits when they notice ''starting development in 1st quarter 2024''. With CIG, when its here its reality, whether it works, or is complete as a tech, is another story. So CC'ers can waffle on about Star Citizen's techno babble, but you have more chance of getting your new born into pre-school before a new tech enters game from its initial announcement.

The main argument about the discussion with master modes vs live is that master modes fail to achieve its's goals, but still takes a way a lot of stuff away, including the ability to fight at really close range. And you still can not hit that guy with your hammerhead and still die. *I repeat, master modes do not work in bringing the changes that CIG advertise them to bring* While you two guys talk about concepts, that are not related to what master mode changes. BTW, did either of you ever actually play in fleet battles in eve, because it never is that complex as you make it. In the end you wait for some time or hours with your fleet, and click the buttons that your FC is telling you to click, especially in large fleet battles. True story, been there, done that. Would not do again. So maybe talk less about you think how you imagine things will play out and more how they actually do. And with all that said, I think master modes are "fine", makes teamplay a lot easier, makes ganking a lot easier, makes being a bad guy a lot more accessible and logistic heavy. 400-500m/s SCM speeds with 600m/s boost speed for interceptors would still be dope and make the ships a lot less boost reliant. Gives you more time to accelerate to top speeds and that alone would make it feel faster.

1:21:00 L take by Morphologis, there’s no reason someone would want to sit around a multicrew ship as an engineer if it’s not engaging. I personally hope it’s made into a profession where a veteran engineer could decide a fight between two otherwise equivalent battle ships. If you just run around and click buttons or enter up down down left right down at a terminal, no one will want to do it and it will therefore become I hated component of the game. People will complain about the dumb boring job that is forced onto a player. That being said, small ships should not require complex engineering, if at all (you probably just blow up before you could fix anything anyway). Large ships, Capitol ships/ sub Capitol frigates like hammerhead should REQUIRE a competent engineer or at least someone willing to learn and a crew that understands the burden placed on the green guy. The servers are hopefully large enough that it wouldn’t be that hard to find an engineer for hire. You shouldn’t be able to take out a hammerhead and crew it with 2 people. If you only have 2 people, take a hurricane as it’s designed for a 2 man crew and is essentially a single turret hammerhead on a medium chassis. Eventually Star Citizen will be Org centric instead of solo, as the battles become larger instead of 1v1s which make up a dominant percentage of engagements.

@Splincir
@Splincir Ай бұрын
@Tanuki_03 Yeah, just set the prison time for murder to days in real time. Allow the prison mission to work off significant time to offset the increase. But it will keep people from just going murder hobo because they won't be on till tomorrow in which their time will be served. Or just have your sentence only pass when logged in. That way, it forces actual consequences aka risk for the murder hobos. They can still escape or work off their crimes if caught or killed, but can't just log out and skirt the system. I'm sure I'd end up getting screwed somehow by this system, but maybe they just keep it that way for murder or only the highest of crimes to keep those random charges from sending innocent people to prison for long stints.

Regarding disribution centres, I have a strong suspicions they are considering making one of them a server mesh prior to 4.0 Making a Stanton distribution centre its won mesh in 3.23 would enable a high cap fps mission within the DC. Alternatively, the could take an existing mission eg (jumptown) and have say a high plsyr cap mission there. It may also be possible that players from different shards could meet at such locations for fps prior to returning to their lower cap shard.

I used to watch Jim Sterling (it's been a while and apparently I've missed a lot) and one of his major issues with the live service structure was the sustainability of it all. Corporate greed has once again reared it's ugly head to a point where over inflated marketing budgets, demand for not just some profits but ALL of the profits, and the subsequent need to heavily monetize as a result have come to a head and now we're seeing studios and devs paying the price.

Regarding MM. Star Citizen in its current state is the worst game to try PvP as a new player. I tried master mode against people in the gladius and it instantly felt better. Fine tuning and additional systems will make this a very enjoyable experience for majority of players. No MMO enables this these dream of consistent 1v20 scenarios that they talk about. Or the fact that an aurora can no longer 1v1 a gladius. Comparing a these ships to WoW its like expecting a top 1% pvp player to login to a lvl 5 character and beat a lvl 60 very average player. It doesn't work. The developers are starting to actually gameify Star Citizen. And the vocal hardcore pvp players who have lost hundreds of hours of practice for a model in a game that is in development constantly changing have realised a lot of time has been wasted and that they will need to finally adapt to a more even playing field. Someone with 10 hours of pvp experience vs someone with 200 hours on equal footing (same class ship) will still show that hours put in will bring results. This is coming from someone who almost exclusively plays pvp in games. I'll properly play SC when its more fleshed out and all the recent changes are in the right direction for an actual game, not a milsim. Side note, the client side interpolation of these 2km/s ships must be insane. Reducing the speed will increase reliablity on hitreg, which I'm sure all this movement tech the high end pvpers do is just abusing a buggy system.
