That's something I try to make clear when I hear people complain about the world. I work at a convenience store next to a major railway. We get a lot of train jumpers and I have seen so much kindness from these people and to these people. I remember one instance clearly. A freak snow storm rolled in. A homeless man was sitting outside. I went to invite him in out of the cold. Before I could do so a trucker walked up to the man and gave him clothing and several blankets. My heart was warmed. We are good natured beings. When we see suffering most of us, immediately try to put an end to it.

This quote by Dawkins sums up what I think of "We're gonna die": “We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Arabia.[...]We privileged few, who won the lottery of birth against all odds, how dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state from which the vast majority have never stirred?”

Christianity and islam basically state: "god does not need us. We need god." Well then, why did he create you if you are not needed? Why would the jewish god spend time designing a universe and place humans on 1 planet and insert souls into zygotes and then wait around until you die and then teleport you into his heaven. And once in a while, he talks to a human. Once in a while, he sends an angel to do the talking for him. That's a lot of work for some "humans" he doesn't need. On top of that, Christianity claims that god loves us. Sounds like he does need humans. What a stack of bs.

The abrahamic god is a malignant narcissist that loves killing and torturing people, according to the “good” book. He also demands constant praise, for eternity. He is almighty, yet needs people to defend him from blasphemy. He is all-knowing, yet even from the start people like Adam and Eve could hide from him, and he was unable to foresee that he would have to destroy his perfect creation and start anew. He is omnipresent, yet people need to gather in special buildings to pray to him. He has a divine plan, but people frequently ask him to change his plan for them. Almost like the people who made him up didn’t think it through before writing it down.

I remember once having a forty five minute conversation with a Jehovah's witness about the origins of the Bible and how Christianity has clearly been modified to suit political ends, how it has borrowed heavily from Paganism; how God is depicted the exact same way Zeus was, how the church declared the childhood of Jesus "non canon", and so on. Next week, the Jehovah's Witnesses were REALLY evasive and just wanted me to take their pamphlets and go away. I like to think I was responsible for that.

JasanQuinn The trouble is, which version of the bible did you have the discussion about? King James? The JW's have their own version, OT & NT. In their NT Jesus was crucified on a tree, which makes a ,mockery of the sign of the cross, wouldn't you say? Like all religions, give the people what they want, re-write it if necessary, 33 branches of Christianity, & "they" can't agree on what is supposed to be the word of god. Yeah, tho I say, JW's hate it when they can't answer your inquiries. If you get a next time, ask them if they believe in the physical resurrection of Christ.

So, you start selling a bunch of it for money? Sorry, no, the smartest thing to do in the doomsday prepper's insane and self-aggrandizing scenario is to sit on the entire stockpile and fuck everybody else. +Graham ASH-PORTER Pain and fear caused by a great many things. Religion just being a symptom that, rather than bringing us together as it claims to, just keeps fracturing us further and further and giving us reasons to turn on one another. Catholics killing protestants, muslims killing christians, christians killing jews, all of these descended *from the same abrahamic religion!* The only thing that has brought this madness to an end is viewing ourselves as fundamentally part of the same group. Not christians, not muslims, not left or right, black or white, *humans*.

More people murdered by atheists the last century alone compared to all religious wars combined.
@Mikri90
@Mikri90 7 жыл бұрын
Nope, try again. Atheism is not a belief system nor it is basis for forming a social and political structure. Theists constantly spam with the narrative that the regimes of the 20th century were atheistic regimes. At best you could say that they were against classical theism, but they were every bit as dogmatic as any religion, and were never in any way representative of secularism, humanism, freedom of speech and human rights. They may have had no notions of God in a conventional sense, but no one ever killed anyone in the name of atheism, as atheism itself has no doctrine, no strict guidelines to follow and nothing to "use" or call upon to in order to do so. There is simply no way you can use atheism to rationalize those atrocities as atheism is lack of belief in deities, and not a belief system with everything a system includes. On the other hand, when you do believe that you answer to a divine authority (and by divine, it could very well be a glorified human figure, Mao, the Russian Tzar, Stalin, Hitler, it makes no difference, the difference is only superficial), all those things are possible. And when the delusion is so strong, such monstrosities are easily rationalized as those who are under those delusions sincerely believe that they are fulfilling the will of God (or in the case of a supreme dictator, they believe they are doing the best for their country). As if God, omnipotent as he is, couldn't fulfill his will by himself, if he actually existed. But it's quite convenient that all those acts are done in his name, by humans, declaring they know what God's will would be. And even if we grant you that you are correct, which you are not, it still wouldn't even come close to being as bad as religious wars. Because religious wars aren't just those in which those who profess faith are directly involved, as in the case of Crusades, but so many more are indirectly caused by religious bigotry and induced by differing religious beliefs which only breeds hatred. And btw, Hitler was a known Catholic, enjoyed a huge support by the Vatican, no one from the Nazi regime was ever excommunicated from the church (apart from Goebbels - for a laughable reason - which is marrying a protestant), and the whole Nazi regime was fueled and fed to the masses by religious bigotry and hatred caused by the inherent antisemitism of the Christian dogma. And the last but not least, it's only the part of the harm done. Young children are being abused, not just physically and sexually by systematic pedophilia of the Vatican church (and others), but by being brainwashed and indoctrinated from an early age. They are also being fed with nonsense, with pseudo-science, and being forced into belief by fear-mongering. Religion is also responsible for being directly involved into questions of politics, and in countries with no separation of church and state for directly affecting human lives on the most basic level by making laws, often so backwards and primitive in order to repress their citizens. Do I have to remind you how women are treated under Sharia law? Let us also not forget all the church trials, witch hunts, heresy hunts, the inquisition and torture. For fuck sake, we have a huge hole in our (not so distant) history which we call the Dark Ages, for a reason.

I remember Y2K quite well. I am both a programmer and an IT specialist. I kept telling my parents and the rest of my family that it was all sensationalism in the media. I told them that Y2K was not going to be an issue. My mother refused to believe me. I can't be right, because the Y@K was all over the news. I asked if her if she even knew what the Y2K issue was. She didn't understand it, so there was no way I understood it. Never mind I was a college graduate. Never mind that this was my field. Never mind that I was paid thousands of dollars to ensure CEOs (yes, more than 1. I worked under contract for many corporations. All smaller and local, but just the same. I was paid for my expertise. All that meant nothing to her. She WANTED to believe. She wanted the slate wiped clean so that all the rich was brought low. I had an aunt and uncle who refused to listen, because my mother told them I was wrong. They spent 3/4 of their life savings on canned foods, dry foods and barrels of water (and they have an artesian well, meaning they don;t even need a pump to get water from their well. The water table they tapped into has such pressure, being at the base of a small mountain, the they had to have a special cap to handle the pressure and limit the flow. They misunderstood Y2K so badly, they even bought water that they would never need. But they believed even the ground water would be poisoned by Y2K.) Their garage and basement was full of supplies. My uncle even bought a lot of ammunition to protect their food supplies. Almost 2 decades later and they're still eating all the crap they bought. All the water they bought, they kept 1/2, just in case, but donated the rest. They never said who they donated it to. I remember when Y2K came and nothing happened. Everybody kept their money, their property and nothing went wrong. The world did not end or change. But some people, who knew the truth and accepted the truth, made millions, even billions, from Y2K, by preying on the deluded fools who spent their savings on unnecessary survivalist supplies, that were overpriced for that single, upcoming date. The excuse for the price gouging, was that demand had exceeded supply, yet there was enough for everyone and the suppliers even had a surplus, after the fact. The only group that didn't go out of their way, was the Mormons, but their religion dictates a survivalist attitude anyway. They already had their 2 years worth of supplies in storage. My mother refused to acknowledge the fact that I was right and she was wrong. That was nothing new. She never accepted that fact that I had any of education or that I ever I knew what I was talking about. She took every opportunity to try and make a jab at me, with some kind of demeaning comment. Almost every time it backfired and proved her to be what she was. She was a misandrist who resented the fact that I refused to abide by her antiquated ideas of how people should live. My maternal grandparents were far more accepting of my lifestyle than she ever was. They understood that times and laws had changed, and with those changes, social ideas of acceptability had changed, as well. They came to understand that many of the values they had been taught as children were changed now, because those "values" were actually bigotry. And here is the icing on the top of the cake. My aunt and uncle who wasted so much of their life savings on these supplies, actually asked me, "Why didn't you tell us this wasn't real? You knew it was all a lie, didn't you?" Unbelievable! My grandfather actually spoke up at that point. He told them, "He did tell you. I was sitting right here when he told you. You just decided to listen to Ally, instead. You should know by now, she never accepts anything he says as true and refuses to listen to him. She puts him down and created trouble for him whenever she can. Why do you think we didn't go out a buy a bunch of stuff. He made sense. He told us these companies and corporations were fixing the problems or had already fixed the problem. I knew I didn't know what the Y2K was, but he did. He tried to explain it to us. I don't get what it was, but he told us that by the time the year changed, it wouldn't be an issue any more. There's no way I could be 193 years old." (FYI: Ally was th nickname by which they referred to my mother. Even my grandparents knew what she was and her attitude toward me. i could actually tell some funny anecdotes about her misandry backfiring. I won't, but I could. Too far off topic here.) It was funny, that's the only thing he got out of the explanation. But he was smart enough to realize I was right. So many people bought into the Y2K sensationalized BS, hook line and sinker, lock stock and barrel or which ever other expression you wish to use. There is a psychology that goes along with this. People will often believe a lie, because they either want it to be true, or because they fear it to be true. When they have fallen in to this psychological trap, they tend to ignore (or subconsciously block, and hence, not even hear or see,) any contradicting truth or fact. They are stuck in the lie and will make and decisions based on that lie. When the media plays upon the fears of people, sensationalizing garbage, they hurt people. They will convince the public that an innocent person is guilty of the worst and most heinous crimes, based purely on lies and emotion. Or, in the case of Y2K, cause people to spend a lot of money on useless products to protect themselves from something that isn't going to happen, or that isn't even a problem. It could all have been avoided if the media had just done some fact checking and given the appropriate weight to the reporting of the solutions, as they did to the discovery of the issue. But the problems created fear and panic. The fear and panic increased ratings AND made some their sponsors a lot of money. These news agencies the spread and bolstered the lies should have been made to pay for the losses of everyone who fell into the lie.

You started off saying "just one person" "Just three people" ect. and near the end you talked about the thousands of people who helped as well as doctors and physicians and the people who developed the antibiotics and so on and so on. If anything, the fact that its so much easier to destroy than create is a testement to the human race. We can, each of us cause so much destruction and yet we live in this world that is so creative. We have homes and food and water and gadgets and gizmo's to keep us entertained, everyone who's reading this has access to the internet and something to read it on. Look what we have done, we've achieved a hell of a lot as a species.

AlexThomson1000 what you fail to understand is that the point he was making was back then bystanders would just enjoy watching these horrible acts, even participating and the masses considered it acceptable, For example hanging blacks for being black. Now we have bystanders by the thousands who see that this as not acceptable as oppose to just one person causing such horrible acts.

Just wanted to add a comment about Charles Whitman. After his autopsy was performed, a pecan-sized tumor was found in his brain, which could have caused him to become hostile. In his suicide notes, he stated that he knew something was wrong with him, but he couldn't control his thoughts. The doctors he had been seeing beforehand did nothing to help him, though they may not have known how to help him. While I obviously don't condone what he did, I actually have some sympathy for Whitman, since the tumor could have caused his actions on that day. Because of that, I would not consider him evil. He seemed to have remorse. This in no way is trying to debate what Seth's main point is, that there have always been bad things to happen. Just wanted to mention more facts about Whitman.

Ironically, if what the consensus of the scientific community is on _global_ warming, these _literally could_ be the "end times". Imo, we really need to stress the "global" part, I have the feeling too many live only in their own microcosm, and never really "zoom out" to look at the big picture, which, by the way, looks pretty grim at the moment. The saddest part of all that, is that it's totally fixable, ALL of the technology to significantly slow anthropomorphic climate change exists, TODAY. If the US put _half_ the energy it put into building a war machine, larger than anything the world had ever seen, _in a mere few years,_ back in the 1940's, imagine what it could accomplish vis a vis the impending climate catastrophe. The only thing standing in the way of that, are billionaire lobbies for oil, gun manufacturers, et al, _atheists,_ who _only_ want to sell oil/keep getting richer, *_using_* end times cultists, to forward _their own_ agenda. As always, the gullible, are the ones who get burned, unfortunately, they literally _could_ take all life on earth with them. What took billions of years to create, capriciously destroyed, by greed on the one side, and apathy on the other. Hey, why worry about this world, when you can go live in fairy land after you're dead? I only wish an "afterlife" exists, _just long enough,_ for these fools to understand they wasted their only life, on a delusion, _just_ before their consciousness winks out. I know that's mean, but these loonies piss me off, sometimes I think humanity _deserves_ to go extinct, there are *_so many_* of them, how do you fight it...?

Absolutely incredible. Even better than most of the TED talkers I've seen. Seth, thank you for your impact on those around us and enabling me to look at life differently. I was recently deconverted from Christianity to atheism by my own choice and I feel free now to investigate the universe as I wish. I hope when I get older to probe the causes of the Big Bang and the like. To uncover the meaning of our existence and how we can preserve ourselves and our planet for the future. Thank you for allowing many others to see that as well. Also, in the "good old days" there would not have been a group of people in that room, or a huge mass of people online, all united for one purpose. In fact, I would be killed for saying what I am saying now. Once again, thank you for such a powerful speech.

***** Seth, you can really hit the nail on the head. This is utterly brilliant. I literally have tears in my eyes after watching this video. There are many, many times where I look at the world around me, and not even the most frightening parts like terrorism or local shootings, but just every day ugliness like people with road rage, inconsiderate people who won't even respect an elder on a bus by standing up and giving his elder their seat, the ugliness of anonymity on the internet which is by far, far too sad to see. I shake my head at the every day ugliness and I close myself off when it becomes too much to bear. Its overwhelming. But, perhaps I should be looking at it another way. Maybe I should focus on the random acts of kindness that I DO see around me. The person that buys a cup of coffee for a homeless person, the generous tipper, the person that helps an old lady carry their groceries up stairs. Maybe we don't see it as often as it should happen, but maybe we don't have our eyes open enough to it because we are blinded by the ugliness surrounding us. But maybe if we become more aware of the good in the world, we would in turn try to show how good WE can be on an every day basis. Thank you again, Seth. You really are an inspiration to many!

6:00 If u'r gonna talk about ISIS you should really mention it was us (NATO and the western military alliance) and our regional proxies (Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, & Turkey) that created and continue to fund ISIS. If you dont know that, you're sleep in front of your TV. -Talking about all this horror but no mention of the fact that the 911/anthrax attacks were clearly domestic crimes and the wars launched in their names, again, illegal wars of aggression based on lies. How about looking a little deeper than the headlines, you know, at the actual facts.

The facts of the 911/anthrax attacks speak for themselves: they were domestic crimes. (Read ANother Nineteen by Kevin Ryan and the 2001 Anthrax Attacks by MacQueen). By the fact that we funded the groups that overthrew Qaddafi in Libya and are doing the samein Libya, (who created the FSA ?) I mean, if you dont know these things, u'r asleep in front of your TV.
