Yeah my strength is definitely Hills,I beat a lot of people because of hills, I think it's so important to run Hills or mountains. And I love doing it. So if you're a strong hill Runner or you just train a lot of Hills to make you faster, it will work to benefit you. That was nice you got to run with a couple guys Seth. Because I'm always running alone, there is nobody here where I live to run with, and it would be nice to run with people once in awhile. Great vlog Seth.

Where I live it is harder to find something resembling flat ground. As a newbie runner who started running at 40 years old last summer after 20 years on the couch, those hills are a threat to my self esteem as I have to drop my pace so low I could walk faster. On the steeper stuff I usually do walk. Ironically it was a local hillclimb race that actually got me started running. I've done that race two years mostly hiking it with about a month of feverish hill hiit interval training in advance. Last year I decided to try and continue training to see if I could actually run parts of it this year. It is a 4Km race with a 10% average incline so it is a tough cookie for a reforming couch potato. My main goal now is to complete a marathon, it has always been something I've kind of wanted to do, but never had the confidence that I could ever achieve it.

French Alps here (Chamonix not too far). Hard on the kids learning to ride bikes, but generous gift to the avid runner! There are mountains everywhere but my backyard mountain is a 4000ft climb to the top. I am working my way to doing that in preparation for a local race called the Samoens Trail Tour - 7000ft+ elevation over 33km / 20 odd miles. Most of us runners slow running in the winter due to ski season and touring and pick up now, end of March. Inspired by your videos! Hi Seth. I am a high school cross country and track runner. I live in northwest washington state. We incorporate hills a lot into our workouts and I did quite a bit during the offseason. Our campus is very close to a mountain of about 1000ft and we do long run progressions up it every week. We also do repeats on it. Hills are a rather big part of our schedule all of the time.

Hi Seth I live in the Netherlands and it doesn't get flatter than this. But on the coast we have dunes and at highways viaducts. Closer to home there is an old garbage dump called the Bult and cyclists and runners train here. So totally agree that up gives you strength and speed 💪🚀
@StephaneMichel-Montréal5 жыл бұрын
Hi Seth. Willing to run faster is of course an excellent mean of motivation. With the races season starting, it is understandable that setting a new PR, whatever the distance, is the satisfaction runners aim to reach after the whistle blows. However, though techniques to run faster, and even more when presented by down-to-earth channels like yours, are very interesting to learn, this should always be balanced by learning techniques to run better, a key in my opinion to avoid injuries while targeting a time vs distance goal. Ideally, shoe review+techniques to avoid injuries (including muscular reinforcement)+techniques to improve our times remains the ideal recipe for a running channel. But in any case, the most important goal will always reside in the pleasure running brings, pleasure that transpire in your daily vlogs.

QD: if I look at my workouts, 90% is hillwork, 10% is speed. After flat weeks I start with 10x300m hills in my neighbourhoud that touch the 20% grade in the middle, to remind the legs of the power required. Preferred hillwork is set (3 or 4) of 1k long hills slightly touching but not exceeding 10%. That can really kill my legs. The one I love most is a hill out in Vitoria (Spain) 9K at around 3-4% which is more like the "rolling hills" you describe. Aerobic effect after that is fantastic. And the downhill back to the hotel... aaahhh... :-)

I agree, hilly trail runs so much more fun that long flat runs. i am blessed to live between two mountains covered with trails, including the AT, and also close to trexler game preserve with a very challenging 9.2 mile loop called the border trail. Inspired to head there today. This month starts my volume buildup, starting very easy with a goal of 50k in october. Thank you for continuing to inspire! Hill! QD: I began to incorporate hill workouts into my routine at the end of last year before I began distance training at the beginning of this year. It consisted of 300 meter repeats @90-95% effort on a ~10% grade with a jog back down the hill to cool down. I usually did these at the end of a shorter run and started seeing the benefits almost immediately.

I do hill repeats on the treadmill. I also try to seek out routes that have hills. Recently I’ve been adding incline walks on the treadmill where I keep it at 10-15 incline and go until I’ve gained 1000 ft. While Horsetooth isn’t my goal race, I want to improve on prior times and I know from years past I’m ~14 minutes faster on the Colfax course vs Horsetooth.

Hill / Qod: I really enjoy hills. A couple of my favorite runs are out from my in-laws house on rural gravel roads that are probably a bit steeper and hillier than "rolling", but the scenery is really nice. As far as workouts go, I have a street that's straight and rolls up and down nicely about a half mile from my house, so I can do up to 5 miles of hills on it pretty easily. I've done a lot of tempo runs on that 5 mile stretch!

Ah cool, some mountain stuff, cheers Seth ;-) . I'd say just about all my runs are mountain based with Thursday nights doing specific workouts with my club up and down the steep streets of Llanberis. I don't really include any strength specific training as I run in the mountains here in North Wales so much as they are right out my door, I count that as strength training! A long run in the mountains for me is around 30km/18-20 miles with as much vert as I can include with our modest height peaks; as an example: on Monday I'm running a 30k that has appx. 2,400 metres vert (just shy of 8,000ft in your money) and whilst it won't be fast (I'll still be quite broken at the end!), it's the vert I want combined with longer distance to really push my body. Most of my shorter mountain/fell runs have anywhere between 600 - 1,200 metres vert gain, it just depends on route choice and how I feel. I don't do speed work, but like you with that awesome half marathon time, I find the mountain running really does enable me to go faster on more level terrain when I want to. Not sure I could match your half though! ;-) . As you were running up the tarmac road I totally related to you finding those less-steep, long drags harder work! Yes, because they are runnable!! Weird that we find the steeper stuff easier :-)
