So when I first played Below Zero I had an Ice Worm encounter more like the early access version. My guess is that it has the same "issue" as the Sea Dragon where how they act changes from playthough to playthough a lot. Obviously it's not the same since the Ice Worm is programed differently but a similar effect might be happening. It could also be that I played it on switch, there are a lot of variables that could affect it. Either way it makes me sad that you experiencing the early access version has in turn ruined your experience for the main game, not unlike spoilers in that case.

The little exposition letting us know ‘this is the end I did what Sam wanted’ was a shining example of how bad the storytelling was in this game.

Honestly, I think that Subnauticas Story and Subnautica Below Zeros story are trying to accomplish very different things. Even if its unintentional. **SPOILER WARNING BTW FOR BOTH GAMES! I'm going to talk about the story for both so if you haven't finished both (or finished watching both) then do not read!** Subnautica's story was more establishing the history of the planet and really hammers in this notion of "You are all alone on this desolate crater of shallow ocean. Everyone has died either from this mysterious disease or from horrendous monsters that are out to kill you." It's part of what really makes Subnautica so terrifying. Multiple voice logs like Ozzy's or Officer Keen's paint a picture of terrifying leviathans and large creatures, which have seemed to have eaten their bodies WHOLE, because there is no sign of them. Most of the stuff in the logs is involved in world building of how the current society acts (Ie. The stuff about relationships found on the Aurora), stuff about Altera, stuff about the Kharaa, or stuff that explains why there are abandoned bases (Ie. The Degasi). It's mostly focused on world building, and establishing terror in players because they hear about all these people who have just vanished. It taps into that fear of the unknown, the "Theres always a bigger fish" instinct. The Degasi was probably a way to explain all these bases that give you access to different types of base stuff, as well as show how in universe people react to things in the game, since we the player dont know what's natural in this universe and the protagonist doesn't talk. The whole story establishes this universe and this planet, giving us what's natural and what isn't. Meanwhile with Below Zero, the devs actively tried to prevent the game from being too much of a horror game, trying to make it more like what the original Subnautica was meant to be, a survival exploration game. Unlike the original Subnautica, which was meant to be more of a world and planet building experience, Below Zero is much more honed in on the characters so as to make it much less of a terror experience. It makes you feel less like that you are alone, even though you are. And since most people who play Below Zero have played Subnautica 1, the planet has much less stuff that needs explaining. It still has messages that talk about scary monsters like Ice Worms and other leviathans, but it also talks about ways of easy escape. The mercury wreck covers a bit of the last game and how they were shot out of the sky from the G.U.N. slightly however. But it's more focused on the people aspect, partly because they dont have much else on the planet to talk about, but also because of them adding AL-AN to the game to talk to Robin. Adding AL-AN to the game solves one of the problems of the loneliness and part of the fear aspect from the last game, but they need to have the main Protag talk about something and give another goal other than just finding the architect parts. Give somewhere for you to go. A reason why. So they crafted the story around things that Robin needs to do, to encourage exploration. That's what the demo seemed to try to do throughout the whole process, trying to encourage the player to explore different locations. I feel like the story is more focused around the aspect of trying to solve the terror feelings. Since that's something they really tried to cut down on. That's just me though :)

there were a few mods that came out for og Subnautica that improved gameplay, i really hope that with time someone will give us an unofficial fix to the ice worm section
@skeltheshapeshifter26972 жыл бұрын
The funniest thing for me is that when I did the Ice Worm section, I just ran through it. No vehicle, no prawn, no snowfox. I went in exploring and by the time it got to the point where it was like "you should probably have this stuff" I was like, I'm not gonna go all the way just to make a thing and come back. I'll either die and go back and make it or I'll get through. And... yeah, I did it. Just ran straight through, hugged the walls, tried to get up on rocks and stuff. I got attacked a couple times but I had a medkit or two. Got to the end, got the thing, felt like a champ. And then I went back later with the thumper and the snowfox and got obliterated. Don't know what happened there. I think my strat of acting like an idiot and running straight through like a crazy person was the superior way to do it.

For a third Subnautica game, I'd like to see you being part of a team sent by Alterra to try and salvage their efforts on 4243B. Perhaps even giving you the choice of one of four people to play with while the other three are AI's you travel with; a Scientist, an Engineer, a Lawyer, and a Publicist (marketing). All are equally capable of using basic Alterra technology so there's no change in gameplay, but they each KNOW different things, causing the story to differ depending on your choices. Obviously, it's not a Subnautica game unless there's unseen carnage, one could have an accident, another could have 'an accident', and the third could go missing.
